To do:

  • Get in touch with someone from the Telltale Games Modding discord server, and get a comprehensible explanation of what the build contains.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

Watch on YouTubeA prototype build for the Xbox 360, dated March 9th 2012, it predates the final build by a month. The real gold here is the many unused and obsolete resources, ranging from textures to weapons to unique characters, that were still in the game's files when this build was leaked. Interestingly there are 3 versions of episode 1 (one of them doesn't work). Some known differences compared to the latest version are the animations and dialogues that are not present in the latest version.

Introduction#

  • Cut dialogue in the police cruiser, includes a line from the deputy, along with an animation of him throwing his hand in the air. Lee's reaction also goes unused. In the final version, the scene skips straight to the deputy saying, "Regardless, could be you just married the wrong woman".
    • In the retail version, Lee only sighs after the comment about his wife, but in this build, he also raises his finger.
  • You can see Lee's reflection in the car windows. The Telltale Tool didn't support reflections at that point, so every reflection was achieved by using a separate model facing the opposite direction.1 This may have been removed due to time constraints or for optimization reasons since it would require rendering at least 3-4 extra Lee models at all times — one in the back, two on the sides, and one in the rearview mirror, as seen in the video.

Drugstore#

When the walkers try to break into the drugstore, instead of gunshots, military sirens and helicopters can be heard, suggesting that military forces were still active at this point in the apocalypse.

  • This explains Lee's line, "Is that the military?" which is more ambiguous in the final release.
  • Also explains why most of the characters look at the ceiling instead of watching the entrance.

Notes#

  • There doesn't seem to be almost any files related to episode 2.

Differences#

  • Some animations lack polish.
  • The audio mixing is off in some scenes, with certain sounds not adjusting in volume when the camera cuts to a farther angle.
  • Some UI elements are yellow instead of white.
  • Being rude to the deputy would give you a pop-up message saying "The deputy didn't like your attitude".
  • The camera changes angle when he begins rambling about his stories, whereas in the retail version, it stays in Lee's backseat POV.
  • There is no loading screen after Lee jumps the fence into Clementine's backyard.
  • Lee has the option to ask if Clementine has been alone for long. But the option seems to be broken, as when the player selects it, it will skip to the next dialogue.
  • Being kind to Clementine will give you a pop-up message saying "you showed compassion for Clementine" which isn't present in the final game.
    • The message "Clementine was hurt by that" also goes unused.
  • Carley's gun has different sound effects.
  • The message "Clem is hopeful" also goes unused.
  • Normally, you have to inspect Clementine's fingers before applying the bandage, but in this build, you can skip that step. Neither the characters nor the game acknowledge this, suggesting it was an oversight that was fixed before release.
  • In the drugstore, there is a prompt to inspect a drawer. Clicking on it makes Lee walk toward it, but nothing happens. This interaction was either unfinished or removed before being ultimately cut.

Oddities#

  • Glenn says, "They got kids, Carley" when talking to Lilly. This could suggest that Carley was originally against letting the group stay in the drugstore, or it may indicate that Lilly and Carley had their names or roles swapped at some point in development.
