This is a sub-page of Proto:The Simpsons: Road Rage (GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox).

A build of the PlayStation 2 version compiled on September 17th, 2001. While the game was nearly complete by this point, it still features a surprising number of differences.

General#

  • The GameCube and Xbox-exclusive ending with Kang and Kodos is present in this version.
  • The options screen allows the player to view both the opening and closing videos instead of just the closing video in the final game. The former options are present in the retail GameCube version.
  • Three of the secret camera modes unlocked with a cheat code do not have names and instead appear as ???. These are Look Camera, Tracking Camera and Kull Cam. However, Overhead Camera is named.
  • When returning to the main menu after leaving a level, the main menu music plays while the loading screen is shown.
  • Head to Head doesn't check whether or not you actually have 2 controllers plugged in, so selecting the mode with only one player is possible.

Debug Display#

The performance metrics display is slightly different from the one in the final build. It can enabled in this build with the following code: 2011172C 00000000

  • The framerate is displayed with one decimal point of precision after it.
  • The memory usage has the same value represented in MB next to the value in bytes.

Gameplay#

  • Particle effects such as smoke and fire continue to move when the game is paused. Water is also affected.
  • A "turbo boost" ability which isn't present in the retail version is enabled. When stopped, hold Square and X at the same time for several seconds, then let go of Square. Your car will gain a massive speed boost.
  • Mr. Burns sometimes disappears after colliding with you, and the bus can also disappear randomly.
  • After dropping off a passenger, the spot where you originally picked them up becomes unavailable until you complete another drop-off.
  • Several drop-off location names were changed after this build, mostly to correct grammatical errors.

Evergreen Terrace#

  • When driving into the Springfield Elementary School, the camera continues to follow you, whereas in the final version it stays outside of the school and begins to follow you again after exiting the building.
  • A fare removed from the final version of the game is present. Near Millhouse's house, it's possible that Professor Frink, Mayor Quimby, Grampa or Snake will spawn and they'll want to go to the President's House (in the case of Professor Frink and Quimby), to Flanders / Simpson's house (Snake) or just the Simpson's house (Grampa). This destination is in very close proximity to where you pick up said passengers, which is likely why it was removed.
  • Extra layers of forest textures were added to the background at the water bridge.

Nuclear Power Plant#

  • The fog in this level is slightly denser, and its color is darker than in the final version, which uses a brighter shade of blue.
  • The barn with the crashed truck at the start of the level is missing, allowing the player to drive out of bounds.

Prototype

Sep 25 - Final

  • The fencing surrounding the level is in different positions at several points.

Prototype

  • The beams near the Cooling Towers are much shorter in this build, and the destination preview image in the final version still reflects this old design.

Downtown#

  • The wreck at the start of the level, which blocks you from going out of bounds, has different collision than in the final game.

Springfield Mountains#

  • Several parts of the level are missing, although they exist as invisible collision. Specifically, the objects missing are: parts of the mountain geometry, bushes, rock piles, railings, large trees, the train tunnels, the log archway, the blue building and background tree textures.

Mission Mode#

  • In the mission "Otto's Driving Test", the street lights behind you at the start are missing the blue rings. They can still be knocked over, however.

Credits#

  • Comic Book Guy makes comments more frequently and at one point says the line "We don't have deflector shields you know", from his in-game dialogue. Conversely, his lines "Worst designer ever" and "Worst programmer ever" are not present.
  • Some names are missing in the Core Testers section of the credits.

Files#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Inspect the SNPROFIL.IRX file.

  • The prototype build includes a file titled SNPROFIL.IRX.
  • The final version has two large blank dummy files titled data1.dat and data2.dat which are not in the prototype.
  • The game's menu graphics are stored in an archive titled scrooby.rcf while in the final game they are split into fe1.rcf, fe2.rcf and fe3.rcf. In the prototype archive are unused images that are also present in the final GameCube version.
