This is a sub-page of Proto:The Revenge of the Smurfs.

The Village#

  • There's a Smurfberry on the first branch instead of a Sarsaparilla leaf.

Prototype

Final

  • The first blue house contains a water-throwing Smurf.
  • The blue house right after it contains another water-throwing Smurf.
  • There's one Sarsaparilla leaf here, but two in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • There are two Sarsaparilla leaves here instead of one found in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • A Star was removed between these houses.

Prototype

Final

  • Another Star was removed from between the puddles.

Prototype

Final

  • An extra life was removed from this branch.

Prototype

Final

  • A Smurfberry and Sarsparilla leaf were added.

Prototype

Final

  • Since it hasn't been programmed yet, the Golden Smurf Hat is missing.

Prototype

Final

  • A Smurfberry was removed from this house.

Prototype

Final

  • The green house here also contains a water-throwing Smurf.
  • Two Sarsaparilla leaves were added in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • A Star was removed from here, and replaced with a Sarsaparilla leaf.

Prototype

Final

  • Another water-throwing Smurf can be found just after the house below.
  • The level ends at this green house in the prototype. It was extended for the final.

Prototype

Final

The Forest#

  • The level itself resembles the original design found in the 16-bit games, and the beginning hasn't yet been revamped. However, some changes to the start of the level have been made, suggesting the layout was going to be kept the same before the revamp.
  • The worms in this level are pink instead of yellow.
  • The first three falling apples are missing in the prototype (when compared to the original game). In the final game, the start of the level was revamped in order to introduce the player to the springs.
  • The first jump after is missing a Sarsaparilla leaf.

Prototype

Final

  • The hedgehog after this is placed right on top of the edge, making it difficult to avoid. It was placed further back in the final.
  • There's only one hedgehog there in the final, but two in the prototype.
  • There are two Sarsaparilla leaves at the top area in the final, but none in the prototype.
  • In the prototype, a Star was added on the tree after the diagonal log, along with a worm enemy that aren't found in the original 16-bit games. This was changed again for the final, where a Sarsaparilla leaf was placed on the mushroom.
  • The Golden Smurf Hat just past this point is missing.
  • In the 16-bit games, there's a Star on the next tree. It was moved over in the final to the next tree, but in the prototype, there was also an apple here.

Prototype

Final

  • Two Sarsaparilla leaves were added to this area.

Prototype

Final

  • There's a falling leaf at this point in the prototype, but it's a bit redundant since Hefty has enough power to simply leap over the ditch. As such, the final replaced it with two Sarsaparilla leaves.

Prototype

Final

  • The two hedgehogs past this point were changed to a single worm.
  • The tree stump next to those enemies contains four Sarsaparilla leaves in the prototype, but only three in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • The level layout changes slightly from here. In the prototype, it follows the original path from the 16-bit games, but in the final, a star was removed and a hedgehog enemy roams a flat path, whereas you need to leap up to this area in the original and prototype versions.
  • In the prototype, the level ends here. It was once again extended for the final.

Prototype

Final

  • A hedgehog was added to this area, but it was removed in the final.

The Tree#

  • Like before, the main layout represents the 16-bit games. However, as this level features very few changes layout-wise, this doesn't make much of a difference.
  • There are no sarsaparilla leaves on the mushrooms at the base of the tree.
  • One of the sarsaparilla leaves was removed from the first branch on the left, and a falling apple was placed here.

Prototype

Final

  • The branch just above it contains a star in the prototype. In the final, it's changed to another sarsaparilla leaf.
  • Some sarsaparilla leaves were moved, and two more were added.

Prototype

Final

  • The first branch on the right contains two sarsaparilla leaves in the prototype, plus a falling apple. It was changed to a star in the final, and the apple was removed.

Prototype

Final

  • You can't reach the branch above this by jumping in the prototype.
  • There's an extra life at the end of that branch, with a falling apple close enough to the start of the branch that it could be considered a cheap shot. In the final, it's a star, with a Golden Smurf Hat at the other end. The falling apple was moved closer to the star.
  • The branch on top of this contains a star in the prototype, whereas the final replaces this with two more sarsaparilla leaves.

Prototype

Final

  • There's another star on the branch above this. It was removed in the final.
  • The mushroom above contains a sarsaparilla leaf instead of a Smurfberry.
  • Back on the left, there are three sarsaparilla leaves instead of two.
  • Just above, a falling apple was added to the final game.
  • The top-left branch has four sarsaparilla leaves in the prototype. In the final, two of those leaves are placed on the branch beneath, and a star was added to the top instead.

Prototype

Final

  • The leaf clump on the top-right branch has no collision detection.
  • There's an apple at the very end of the level which was removed in the final, likely either because it could mislead players into falling to another platform that doesn't exist, or for being flat out redundant.

The Bridge#

  • The background is darker in the prototype.
  • There's a star on the first pole in the prototype, which was replaced by a Smurfberry (and lowered) in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • Most of the bottom sarsaparilla leaves are missing in the prototype.

Prototype

Final

  • The area at the bottom-left received a few changes. The upper platform was shortened, and contains one sarsaparilla leaf instead of the three found in the prototype. The very bottom platform was also shortened in the final, and moved up a little so that the player can't enter the water from here.

Prototype

Final

  • The water level is slightly higher in the prototype.
  • The water is darker in color compared to the retail game.
  • On the next horizontal pole, there's a star in the prototype, instead of the two sarsaparilla leaves in the final.
  • One of the log platforms on the water below contain a Smurfberry, which was removed in the final.
  • There's another Smurfberry to the right on the lower horizontal pole, which was also removed. The bee here was also moved into the center.
  • The line of sarsaparilla leaves guiding the player to the next set of logs is absent.
  • There's a low flying bird here to help Hefty reach the other side. In the final, there's a trail of sarsaparilla leaves leading to the logs below, and the player must reach the other side solely by leaping over them.

Prototype

Final

  • Since the level ends just above in the prototype, this area can be found a little later on in the final, but is lacking the extra life. The retail version contains a spring at this point, since the bridge above was extended.

Prototype

Final

  • At the top of the horizontal pole are four sarsaparilla leaves. These were replaced by a Golden Smurf Hat below them.
  • The level was again extended for the final. Both games have the same end point.

The Black Forest#

  • The background features a white line in the palette, which was changed to a dark grey for the final.
  • The Angry Smurf chases you relentlessly when you're not facing it. In the final, he stops at the top of the hill.
  • A glitch with the first Angry Smurf can be used because of this. Facing left continuously will cause it to hop on top of Hefty, and keep hopping up further until he leaves the screen entirely.
  • The Bzz Fly was moved over a few pixels to the right in the final.
  • There's a hidden extra life in the tree stump in the prototype. This was changed to a star in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • There's a missing Bzz Fly next to the stump.

Prototype

Final

  • For the larger gap, there are two floating leaves in the prototype, but only one in the final.
  • Just after this, there's a falling apple that was removed in the final.
  • There's a falling leaf in the prototype just past another tree stump, but in the final, there's a trail of four sarsaparilla leaves instead.

Prototype

Final

  • The star in front of the upper open cave was moved inside in the final, replacing the extra life that's here in the prototype. However, the final moves it too far back for the enemy to be of any threat, whereas it's in the right place in this prototype.
  • In the prototype, Hefty has some trouble entering and exiting this cave. The game often pushes him back.
  • The Golden Smurf Hat is missing from on top of the cave. Instead, there's another extra life right next to the tree stump.

Prototype

Final

  • There's a star inside the tree stump, instead of the two sarsaparilla leaves found here in the final.
  • The falling apple found after the tree stump is missing in the prototype.

Prototype

Final

  • The Bzz Fly nearby encircles the apple entirely, whereas in the final he moves over it.
  • As with The Village, the level was extended for the final.

Prototype

Final

Carnivorous Plant#

Prototype

Final

  • As is the case with all bosses, there is no boss health meter.
  • The plant uses the palette from the SNES game.
  • A glitch can sometimes occur, seemingly at random, where the jump button is disabled.
  • The second chain on the cage has an incorrect palette.

The Lake#

  • Like a few other levels, the beginning was remade in the final. At this stage, the prototype still resembles the 16-bit versions.
  • The ducks don't come as close.
  • The star that appears on the third section of ducks was removed in the final.
  • At the end of this area, there are two stones instead of another duck to jump on. A frog and a second star at the end were also moved to this second platform.

Prototype

Final

  • The extra life was removed.

Prototype

Final

  • A Golden Smurf Hat was added on the next stone.

Prototype

Final

  • A fly was added to the stone after this.
  • An extra life used to be present on this large stone, but it was removed and nothing replaced it.

Prototype

Final

  • The background contains some missing pixels at the very top of the screen. If Hefty leaps on one of the flies from this area at just the right height, the player will briefly see the glitched background. This was fixed in the final by amending the camera height, as well as adding the missing pixels.
  • As with several other levels, it was extended.

Prototype

Final

The Haunted Lake#

  • The smoke is static, and has a different appearance to the one in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • There's a Smurfberry on top of the second set of bricks that was removed in the final game.

Prototype

Final

  • Breaking an hourglass does not show the shards scattering.
  • A star was removed in this area and replaced with a spider.

Prototype

Final

  • The extra life was removed and a Golden Smurf Hat was placed just a little further ahead.

Prototype

Final

  • In the area with multiple swords, a ghost is missing.
  • There's a star between the second and third swords, which was removed in the retail release.
  • This level was also extended.

Prototype

Final

The Field#

Part One#

  • The level background has an entirely different palette compared to the final.
  • The foreground graphics were changed. In the prototype, they are leaves that line both the top and bottom of the screen. In the final, they are twirling vines that can only be seen from the top.
  • Hefty starts a few pixels further back.

Prototype

Final

  • The main enemies in this level are immortal hedgehogs. In the final, they were replaced by the more manageable spiders.
  • The worms in this level are pink instead of yellow.
  • The first two sarsaparilla leaves are absent in this build.
  • The Smurfberry nearby (at the far right) is also missing.
  • The path leading to the first star of the level is actually a very secret pathway obscured by trees and bushes in the prototype.

Prototype

Final

  • There's an extra life here, replaced with a Smurfberry for the final.

Prototype

Final

  • There's an area just above this that contains a star in the prototype. Not only did the final remove the star, it also removed both of the entrances leading into it, rendering this alcove obsolete in the final release.

Prototype

Final

  • All of the sarsaparilla leaves that normally guide the player are missing.

Prototype

Final

  • The Golden Smurf Hat to the left is missing.
  • At the top, there's a droplet in the bush you crawl under that was removed in the final.
  • A sarsaparilla leaf is missing just past it.
  • Due to mechanics, it's almost impossible to get into the Exit passageway.

Part Two#

  • A Smurfberry was added between the second and third worms.
  • There's a hedgehog enemy at the bottom of the first drop which was removed in the final.
  • In the next clearing, there's an extra life that was removed for the retail release. As with most of the extra lives in the final, it was replaced with a Golden Smurf Hat just a little further ahead.

Prototype

Final

  • There are two stars on the floating leaves in this version. One star was replaced with a sarsaparilla leaf, and the position lowered.

Prototype

Final

  • The spinning hedgehog enemy in this clearing was replaced with a placid spider.
  • In this area there are two spinning hedgehogs, a star and an extra life. The final game has a droplet, a spider, four sarsaparilla leaves and a Smurfberry.
  • The final game added a trail of sarsaparilla leaves leading down to the next area.
  • There's an additional star under a clump of leaves in the prototype, but it was removed for the final.

Prototype

Final

  • There are two spiders crawling along the top of the helmets in the prototype, often wandering outside the helmet's boundaries. The final places a lone spider at the bottom, with the second spider appearing outside the helmets.

Prototype

Final

  • There's only one sarsaparilla leaf next to the last helmet instead of two, and it's placed much higher than either.

The Dam#

  • The star at the beginning of the stage is missing.
  • The sarsaparillas leaves on the larger stumps next to the first opening are missing.

Prototype

Final

  • The very top of the dam has a different design for the stumps in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • In the prototype, the water rushes even at the top of the level. This was fixed in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • The level was again extended horizontally. The level otherwise plays out as the final, it's just that the player has to go further to grab the springs.

Prototype

Final

  • In the prototype, the Howlibird doesn't chase you all the way to the end like he does in the final.
  • There are two stars on the tree. This was lowered to one.

Prototype

Final

  • The exit sign is floating a little in the prototype.

Prototype

Final

The Swamp#

  • Hefty's reflection is a few pixels out.
  • The frogs will still descend even if Hefty is standing on them. In the final, they remain where they are until the player moves Hefty away.

Prototype

Final

  • The vines were redesigned for the final to appear more coiled.

Prototype

Final

  • The two sarsaparilla leaves leading to the second insect are missing.
  • The insects that you ride on are lower in the prototype, and the animation frames play at a significantly faster pace. They can be hard to see when holding on certain vines.

Prototype

Final

  • There's a mosquito on the next lily pad instead of the Golden Smurf Hat found in the final.

Prototype

Final

  • There's a frog just past this with a star on his head, and a mosquito buzzing around. The retail release only has the frog.

Prototype

Final

  • Two Smurfberries were removed from the very end of the level.

Prototype

Final

The Serpent#

  • The mist is on a layer placed behind the background, so it cannot be seen during gameplay.
  • The vine received minor tweaks for the final.

Prototype

Final

  • The snake is missing a frame that warns the player of the attack.
  • The snake has a single frame when defeated. In the final, it was extended to show him faltering before falling.

Prototype

Final

  • The Smurf cage is facing the opposite way.
