This is a sub-page of Proto:Shadow the Hedgehog.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

To do:

  • Document any other differences found in cutscenes.
  • See what other differences are present in this build.

ShadowtheHedgehogFinal-TitleScreen.png

The RC1 prototype is a fairly late build of Shadow the Hedgehog. It has a build date of September 22, 2005, which is three weeks before the final build. Despite this, many changes still exist as at this time Sonic Team was still in the process of censoring the game to reach an E10+ rating.

Graphical Differences#

Icon#

Prototype

Final

The game icon is completely different, as it shows Shadow's life icon rather than showing part of the game's logo on a red background.

Prototype

Final

The game banner is also different, as the logo is more zoomed in compared to the final, and the background is gray instead of red.

If you continue, the game will not be saved.

If you continue, the game will not be saved. Continue without saving?

The game does not ask the player if they would like to continue without saving.

Music Differences#

While the music has been updated since Beta 4 and is closer to release, this build still contains some audio differences. Broken has been removed and replaced with The Chosen One, the early version of All Hail Shadow from Beta 4 is still used, the final version of Waking Up is used instead and Almost Dead has been added.

Notes

sng_stg0800.adx

Vengeance is Mine ...for Radical Highway

An unaltered version of Radical Highway from Sonic Adventure 2! The final game uses a heavier mix of the track for its multiplayer stages.

sng_vox06.adx

Never Turn Back

The song is largely the same but with a couple of differences. The first half of the song with the piano segment is absent, the lead guitar missing, the percussion is more noticeable, and the backing vocals are missing at points.

Cutscenes#

Most cutscenes are identical to the final game, however there are some with slight differences, such as some events having different FOV/Aspect Ratio compared to the final, as well as some visual oddities. In addition, we have more signs Sonic Team was unsure of how much cursing to include in the final game, while pivoting from a T rating to an E10+ rating.

Watch on YouTube

  • Both Chaos Emeralds are colored white.
  • Slightly different lighting, which can be easily seen on Doom's Eye.
  • Shadow says "I'm not here to save your ass" instead of "I'm not here to save you", though the accompanying subtitle text has already been revised to the latter. This uncensored version is not present in Beta 4.
  • Shadow closes his eyes in annoyance when he turns his back on Sonic and says "Don't waste my time".

event5201#

  • Uses the same audio as the Beta 4 prototype. The final game both increases the music volume, and fades out faster.

event7501#

Watch on YouTube

  • Slightly different lighting, which causes the Egg Dealer to appear more grey compared to the final game.
  • Shadow's line "You're going straight to hell!" is missing. Shadow's animation is final with the line included creating an awkward silence in the scene, indicating that the line was originally included, Sonic Team then considered cutting it, and finally the line was re-added for the final game. This censored version is also present in Beta 4.

event8001#

  • Uses the same audio as the Beta 4 prototype.

Unused Text#

Present in 注意.txt is some Japanese text, reminding developers which voice tracks to use when compile depending on the game region (the GameCube version only has one voice language per region due to space limitations). It was written by Takeshi Sakakibara, the lead programmer, and is dated August 27th, 2005.
