Alpha 8

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Proto:Rain World.

To do:

  • Goddamn, there's a lot to cover here. Most of its source code and graphics are unused/broken and there was even a new build in the middle of development in the game's files.
  • Get the basic stuff sorted out (general differences, etc.), then move on to the unused stuff the alpha has.

One of the few available versions of Rain World Alpha created during its Kickstarter development.

General Differences#

Gameplay#

The following are differences between Alpha_8 and the release version.

Modes#

  • Sandbox mode is very simple, only allowing you to spawn 4 lizards in the map. You cannot place anything down, you can only set what spawns.
  • CO-OP mode comes with the alpha.
  • A mode called "Waves" can be found in Alpha_8. Waves essentially has the player fight lizards for each wave. Picking up batflies gives you a spear. When all lizards are dead, a new wave begins. The player can only die for a set amount of times before the game ends.

Other Creatures#

Bubble Barnacles Lizard Eggs of various colors

  • Lizards do not have armored heads, making them susceptible to attacks from the front.
  • Some lizards can grab spears laying on the ground with their jaws and snap them in half, rendering the spear to mere rubble.
  • Lizards spotting slugcat will seem to growl, staying stationary for quite some time.
  • Lizards do not infight.
  • Batflies are slightly more evasive and difficult to catch.
  • The only two interactable creatures in the game are batflies and lizards.
  • This version has Lizard Eggs.
  • This version has Bubble Barnacles.

Slugcat#

  • Like the release version, you must eat something at least 4 times in order to hibernate in your shelter safely. However, there is no limit to how much you can actually eat.
  • While in the middle of performing a pounce, you can switch your direction at any time as long as you're in the air.
  • You can only enter shortcuts or pipes head first. Attempting to enter one of these with your backside first will result in you being pushed out.
  • There is no spear cooldown, meaning that slugcat can stab lizards at an extremely fast rate.
  • In waves mode, picking up a batfly replaces it with a spear.

Music#

The build's files include a number of early versions of tracks, along with a few that did not survive to the launch version of the game. Some of them reflect an earlier direction for Rain World's music with more of a focus on chiptune, as explained by James Primate on the Bandcamp page for Alphas, Gems and Junk, the free album that contains most of the unique tracks:

Most of the early tracks were written for the Rain World alpha, which was conceived in a more uptempo, noisy percussion chiptune style that we wound up moving away from as time went on and we got more emo and dreary with it. Some real gems in that batch though, especially RW_4, which featured heavily in trailers and previews early on, but never fit into the game proper.

The Alpha_8 build itself does not use any of the tracks.

RW_1#

An early version of Urban Jungle.

RW_2#

RW_3#

RW_4#

This track was used in an early trailer for the game.

RW_5#

Strangely enough, this highlight of a track is not included on Alphas, Gems and Junk at all and can only be found within the files of the Alpha_8 build.

RW_6#

This track is titled Deathpit on James Primate's Soundcloud.

RW_7#

An early version of Rooftops.

RW_8#

An early version of Sundown.

RW_9#

An early version of Mud Pits.

RW_10#

An early version of Noisy.
