This is a sub-page of Proto:Pokémon Platinum.

July 17th

Early Platinum prototype, also known by its build number of r1685.

To do:

  • Find more screenshots featuring the beta and the final to compare.
  • Show off some gameplay!
  • Translation(s) for the TV program needed: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/post/8480169/
  • The Battle Frontier is here in an early, but functional state, look into that more and check if there's any Battle Arcade assets yet.
  • Check for any encounter table/trainer data differences. At least the major trainers still use their D/P teams.
  • Split the Gameplay section so it looks a bit nicer.
  • Battle Frontier UI and map screenshots and comparisons, for ones that aren't the checkerboard placeholder in this build.

Final (JPN)

  • For unknown reasons, the first copyright year in the Pokémon line is 2002. This would be left over as late as the May 15, 2008 build.
  • The red shading used in the final version is not present, thus looking closer to the copyright screen in Diamond and Pearl.
  • The opening sounds are the same as Diamond and Pearl.

Title Screen#

Final (JPN)

  • The early Japanese logo is less polished.
  • The copyright text is in a much larger font with no gradient, and says "©2008 GAME FREAK inc." instead of "Developed by GAME FREAK."
  • Giratina is in its Altered Forme, due to its Origin Forme not existing yet.
  • Pressing start plays the same sound as Diamond and Pearl and not Giratina's cry.

TV Program#

  • The background and music are the same as Diamond and Pearl. However, the text is completely different from both Diamond and Pearl and release Platinum.

Gameplay Differences#

Diamond and Pearl (JPN)

July 17, 2007 (r1685)

Final (JPN)

  • The Pokémon sprite animation issues from r127 have been resolved by this point.
  • Most trainers still use their teams from Diamond and Pearl.
  • Animated trainer sprites have been implemented. At this point, however, only Maylene utilizes them.
  • The ability to view different forms in the Pokédex is now given to you from the beginning. The cutscene at the Canalave City gate has been updated to accommodate.
  • The Foreign Language Pokédex upgrade still functions as it did in Diamond/Pearl, allowing you to view only a few specific Pokémon's entries.
  • Occasionally, the Badge Case will glitch out, displaying only the graphics for Roark, Maylene, Byron and Volkner.
  • Area labels are visualized, just like in Emerald. However, the only visual implemented is the one used for water routes.
  • Several areas have began receiving their visual upgrades, for example: Jubilife City features its revised texture work, Oreburgh Mine's conveyor belts were extended and now move, Eterna Forest now has its overlay, and the Eterna Galactic Building has its Platinum design (however, the top floor's walls are untextured).
  • There is no snow in Twinleaf Town yet, but the tree and short grass textures have been updated. The grass texture would end up being reverted in the final game.
  • The story up to Jubilife City is much more like that of the final version, however the game crashes after Dawn/Lucas informs Rowan of his forgotten bag, making it impossible to obtain a starter.
  • The rival has a Level 7 Starly in the first battle he sends out before his usual starter. Losing this fight crashes the game, and since winning it with only a Level 5 starter is very unlikely, this is effectively as far as one can play the game without using debug features.
  • Sky Form Shaymin has been partially implemented, with its sprites from revision 802 of the scratchpads but without its Flying type and alternate base stats.
  • The battle UI uses a design similar to final, albeit with a much different color scheme and unchanged Diamond/Pearl Poké Ball sprites on the bottom screen.

Final (JPN)

  • The trainers on Route 202 have Ball Capsules seals attached to their Pokémon as a test for supporting Ball Capsules on NPC-owned Pokémon, Youngster Tristan's Starly spells out "PLATINUM", Lass Natalie's first Bidoof is a mixture of yellow and orange particles and smoke, and Youngster Logan's Shinx features yellow stars.

Starly

Bidoof

Shinx

  • Looker is completely absent.
  • The Pokétch still uses its single-button layout from Diamond and Pearl.
  • The rival encounter on Route 203 doesn't properly cancel the Jubilife City's music fade-out if the trigger is ran into, causing his theme to play incorrectly during the cutscene.
  • Eterna City's Gym was redesigned with the Flower Clock mechanic, complete with its sound effects.
  • The Bike Shop owner's script in the Eterna Galactic Building was not yet adjusted for the map's layout changes, resulting him turning towards, and eventually - walking straight into the nearby wall.
  • Cynthia doesn't give you a Togepi egg in Eterna City yet.
  • While the Cycling Road Entrance gate has been finalized by this point, all gates past that point (including the one east of Jubilife City) lack their models, resorting to a placeholder checkerboard pattern.
  • The Veilstone City Gym, while already possessing its Platinum layout and new gimmick, is heavily unfinished: the punching bags lack sound effects when pushed, the map is almost entirely devoid of collision, and all trainers are placed right behind Maylene.
  • The Great Marsh's model has been updated, meaning it no longer matches the map's collision, which is still from Diamond and Pearl.
  • Acuity Lakefront still uses its Diamond and Pearl layout.
  • Text appears slightly glitched during the Dialga focus cutscenes at Spear Pillar.
  • Victory Road is completely devoid of textures.

Battle Frontier#

The Battle Frontier is already here, in an early state. Despite its maps being mere placeholders at this point, in some of them, the NPCs required to start a challenge are present and fully functional.

  • The Battle Factory and Battle Hall's mechanics are in place and fully functional.
  • Exiting the Castle Point management menu in the Battle Castle crashes the game, making it impossible to start a battle.
  • The Battle Arcade is missing entirely.
