This page details one or more prototype versions of Moontra Kid - Episode 1: Drug War.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

The demo version of Moontra Kid - Episode 1: Drug War is of unknown origin, and is dated January 8, 2004, five and a half months before the game's release.

'...But what does it mean?'

Differences#

Overall#

  • The demo's screen resolution is much bigger than the final's, being 1024x768 against 800x600. As such, the graphics are much larger.
  • Occasionally, the music may glitch, with some instruments, such as trumpets, being played for much longer than they should.
  • While all of the demo's assets can be visualized with ease, the final game's assets are compressed under zlib.

Demo

Final

  • In the first loading screen, there is a simple splash with the game's title, alongside CyberPlanet's logo. This does not appear in the final game, though the company's logo does appear in a different splash screen displayed before the title.

Demo

Final

  • The game's old title logo uses a more medieval-like title design, rather than a radically different one used by the final game and by Moontra Kid: Quiz Fighting.
  • There are no graphics for each of the game's product advertisements (BRAND'S Essence of Chicken, Vitamilk Champ and One-2-Call Freedom Freestyle) in the title screen.
  • There is no Load option.
  • The game's Options menu cannot be accessed.
  • It is not possible to exit the game due to an oversight.

Gameplay#

  • Only Stages 1 (Tobacco) and 2 (Amphetamine) are available. Also, all level layouts were completely altered.
  • The player's movement is much more sluggish.
  • Enemies move much slower in the demo, and take longer to disappear.
  • It's not possible to attack while crouching.
  • The demo features a numbered hit system for enemies rather than the health system the final game has. Values are listed as follows:
    • Minitobacco: 1 hit / <17HP
    • Mosquito: 1 hit* / <17HP
Note: A variant of this enemy seen in the Demo's Stage 2-1 takes 2 hits to kill.
    • Thin-Thief: 2 hits / 100HP
    • Fat-Thief: 3 hits / 150HP
    • Tobacco: 17 hits / 3200HP
    • Amphetamine: 39 hits / 3500HP
  • The Thin-Thief enemy fires six times before walking again, rather than four.
  • It is not possible to access Dino's Super form. Additionally, the only available special attack is Khlụ–̀n s̄æng cạnthrā (Moon Light Waves), which deals more hits the more it is charged (Red: 2 hits, White: 3 hits).
  • The player takes much longer to move again after being hit by an enemy.
  • After Stage 2 is completed, a small piece of dialogue from Dr.L is seen. Afterwards, the game goes to a black "TO BE CONTINUED" screen. Note that this text can still be found unused in the final game.

Graphics#

Interface#

Demo

Final

  • The gameplay interface was completely redesigned. One thing to note is that there is no TP meter, as it was not implemented yet.
  • The dialogue box seen in gameplay is much more detailed in the demo. In the final game, this design is used in the opening cutscene, whereas the gameplay sequences adopt a much simpler version.
  • The health bar changes color the less health Dino has: it is normally blue, changes to purple with less than 2/3 remaining, and to red with less than 1/3 remaining. This does not happen in the final game.
  • The charge-up graphics are in a much earlier state, without the glow effect the final game has.

Characters#

Portraits
  • Dino and Dr.L received revised, animated portraits in the final game.

Dr.L

Dino/Moontra Kid
  • Dino's hair is not as spiky in the demo.
  • Dino's sword effect is embedded into his sprites, rather than being a separate one.
  • Dino's death animation only has one frame, and he does not have a proper win animation yet.

Demo

Final

Other#

  • There is no mention of Dina, Dino's sister; only Dr.L appears near the end of some of the levels, and in the intro/ending sections.

Items#

None of the product advertisement items exist yet; more generic variations are used instead, as follows:

Dialogue#

  • While the final game has an elaborate intro sequence, including two cutscenes, the demo only has a piece of dialogue said by Dr.L, in the same graphic style as the quiz minigame.

DINO

  • The dialogue seen at the start of some of the levels is much simpler, and only features Dino speaking. Also, the demo has an additional line at the beginning of Stage 2-2.

Music and Sounds#

In General#

  • The instruments are mixed much quieter in the demo.

Title#

  • The lead melody instrument was originally set to FX 4 (atmosphere) rather than Clarinet, and some of the bass notes are different.

Demo

Final

Stage 1#

  • The demo is missing a flute section in the middle and end of the song.

Demo

Final

Stage 2#

  • The demo uses a completely different, unique track.

Demo

Final

Boss#

  • The demo has an additional snare section before the other instruments kick in.

Demo

Final

Clear#

  • Much like Stage 2, a completely different tune is used here. It wouldn't look out of place in a medieval-like game.

Demo

Final

Sound Effects#

  • Dino does not have voice lines yet.
  • The sound effect played when getting a question correct in the quiz minigame is different.

Demo

Final

  • Several sound effects are played when the player charges up an attack. Those can still be found in the final version, albeit unused.

Unused Graphics#

Mystical Gypsy Leftovers#

Within the game's data are many leftover graphical files from Mystical Gypsy, one of CyberPlanet Interactive's earlier games.

CURSOR.BMP is a cursor image.
moontrakid-cursor.png

FONT3.BMP and FONT3SEL.BMP are text graphics for the language selection menu.
moontrakid-font3.pngmoontrakid-font3sel.png

SMALLTEXT.BMP are text graphics for the main menu.
moontrakid-smalltext.png

SOUNDONOFF.BMP are text graphics for the options menu.
moontrakid-soundonoff.png

Partially Unused#

OVER_TEXT.BMP and TEXT.BMP contain graphics for a sound toggle which is never seen, as it would appear in the inaccessible options menu. Also, the "OPTIONS" text in OVER_TEXT.BMP is not seen, as the selection in the main menu skips it, going directly to "EXIT".

moontrakid-text.pngmoontrakid-overtext.png

Other#

BULLET.BMP are possibly very early versions of the graphic for the bullets fired by the Thin-Thief enemy.
moontrakid-bullet.png

CIGAR_BULLET.BMP is an early version of the bullets fired by the Tobacco boss.
moontrakid-cigarbullet.png

CIRCLE.BMP is... a tiny circle.
moontrakid-circle.png

Copy of SHADOWHERO.BMP is an unused shadow texture. It is much larger than all others that are called by the game.
moontrakid-shadowhero.png

HEROFACEQ.BMP is a crude scribble of Dino. Given the name, it was likely a placeholder for the quiz minigame.
moontrakid-herofaceq.png

MISSION CLEAR01.BMP, MISSION CLEAR02.BMP and MISSION CLEAR03.BMP are unused variations of the "Mission Clear" graphic seen when completing a level. It seems the graphic was going to fade from the center rather than appearing from above the screen.
moontrakid-clear1.pngmoontrakid-clear2.pngmoontrakid-clear3.png

MISSION_LIGHT01.BMP, MISSION_LIGHT02.BMP, MISSION_LIGHT03.BMP and MISSION_LIGHT04.BMP are unused overlays. They were likely meant to be displayed with the unused mission clear graphics seen above.
moontrakid-light1.pngmoontrakid-light2.png
moontrakid-light3.pngmoontrakid-light4.png

MOON_R.BMP and MOON_L.BMP are early graphics for Dino's Moon Light Beam attack.
moontrakid-moonR.pngmoontrakid-moonL.png

moon_NR.BMP and moon_NL.BMP are earlier graphics for Dino's Moon Light Beam attack.
moontrakid-moonNR.pngmoontrakid-moonNL.png

TEACHER.BMP is a slightly earlier render for Dr.L.
moontrakid-teacher.png

TEACHERQ.BMP is a crude drawing of a woman. Given the name, this was likely drawn before Dr. L was created, and was a placeholder for the quiz minigame.
moontrakid-teacherq.png

TURTLE_H.BMP are Koopa shell textures directly taken from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
moontrakid-turtleh.png

Unused Music#

Much like the final game, GameOver.mid is an unused audio track meant to be played in the Game Over screen. However, the track found in the demo's data is completely different:

Unused Sounds#

M16.wav is a machinegun sound. It was likely meant to be played in the Tobacco boss.

Fenced_bak.wav is an older, lower-quality version of Fenced.wav, which itself is also unused.

say.wav is a short hi-hat sound. Given its filename, it was likely meant to be used in dialogue.

Unused Items#

Barrier#

While data for a Barrier item was already complete by the time of this demo's release, it is never actually seen. The graphics for the barrier itself, and its description when the player obtains it are different as well:

Item Texture - BARRIER01.BMP / BARRIER02.BMP / BARRIER03.BMP
moontrakid-barrier.png

Barrier Texture - BARRIER.BMP / BARRIERA.BMP

Demo (Unused)

Final

Description

Barrier

Other Drugs#

While Tobacco, Alcohol, Amphetamine and Heroin are the only drugs items that can be seen in the demo, data for Marijuana and Cocaine can also be found, albeit in a very early state.

Marijuana

Scrapped Items#

There are also placeholder graphics for scrapped items within the game's files.

moontrakid-itemblue.png
File: ITEM_BLUE.BMP
Potions directly taken from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

moontrakid-itemred.png
File: ITEM_RED.BMP
Mind Ups and a Mana Prism from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

moontrakid-quickcharge.png
File: QUICKCHARGE.BMP
Would presumably allow the player to charge up attacks faster.

moontrakid-quickmpgen.png
File: QUICKMPGEN.BMP
Would presumably increase the player's MP.

moontrakid-speedup.png
File: SPEEDUP.BMP
Would presumably increase the player's speed.

moontrakid-star.png
File: STAR01.BMP
Unknown purpose.

Unused Areas#

Lamia1001.stg, Lamia1002.stg and Lamia1003.stg are unused levels. While they cannot be properly accessed, as they cause the game to crash, their text contents can be seen; it seems their purpose was that of being tutorial levels.

Level Strings#

Each of the game's levels, including the aforementioned unused ones, contain these strings. They seem to be descriptions of each of the six drug items in the game.
