This is a sub-page of Proto:Mega Man X7 (PlayStation 2).

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

This Mega Man X7 prototype, compiled on May 11th 2003, was used for the game's showcase at E3 2003. It begins with a playthrough of the intro stage as Axl and Zero, then allows a choice of three stages to play between Deep Forest, Battleship and Lava Factory with all of Axl, Zero and X available to choose.

General Differences#

  • Upon startup, the E3 Trailer plays, showing a build with differences compared to any other that is currently available.
  • The intro cutscene lacks the musical accompaniment heard in the final game.
  • Cedar still has the cigar despite being a localized build. The final game's English release removes it.

Early Script#

The E3 Trailer notably features an early version of the final game's English localization. Besides the lack of voice acting, what is there seems fairly close to the final game, but there are some differences in lines. The subtitles are also rendered in a different font compared to the final game.

Notes

Intro Cutscene

Axl: I guess you've heard of the Red Alert?

Axl: I guess you've heard of Red Alert?

Crimson Fortress

???: "A security laser? How worthless. Attack when it locks on to the closest enemy and turns yellow. When the laser is off - you can get through."

???: "A security laser? No problem. Attack when it locks on to the closest target and turns yellow. When the laser is off you can get through."

Slight difference in both wording and punctuation with a hyphen present after "when the laser is off".

???: "You must hurry so dash past the lasers while they're off. Press the directional button twice, or use the {Circle} button."

???: "You must hurry, so dash past the lasers while they're off. Push the directional button twice, or use the {Circle} button."

???: "Uh-oh. You'll have to take out the main security laser. Use hover: push and hold the {Cross} button."

???: "Uh-oh. You'll have to take out the main security laser. Use hover: Push and hold the {Cross} button."

"Push" was given a capital letter in the final game.

???: "Is that a Runnerbomb? Use the special hold attack A-Trance to steal its ability and make him harmless."

???: "Is that a Runnerbomb? Press the {Triangle} button and use A-Trance to steal its ability and render it harmless."

Reworked the sentence to specify the required button and to correct the switch from "it" to "him" mid-sentence. Despite this, the mistranslation of A-Trans as "A-Trance" was not corrected. It would later be corrected in the Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 release of the game.

???: "Could that really be the exit? It seemed WAY too easy... Ah well. Gotta take what comes to you."

???: "The final security door. To open it, you need to attack the core while it's red. If you fail, it'll close. Use the {R2} button to toggle the lock-on, and hit it directly."

A completely different line compared to the final game. Likely exists as it does in the E3 build as the Guard Door is already opened without requiring the completion of its puzzle.

Highway

Zero: "Is this person connected to this incident?"

ZERO: "Are you connected to this incident?"

Reframed statement to be a question Zero asks Axl directly instead of seemingly asking himself. Note that all instances of name labels in the E3 build only have standard capitalization instead of being fully capitalized like the final game.

???: "Incident? What are you talking about? Oh, there it is! So I'll be seeing ya!"

???: "Incident? What are you talking about? Oh, here it comes! So I'll be seeing ya!"

Zero: "Damn it, just what's going on!?"

ZERO: "What's going on!?"

Instance of profanity that was removed for the final game.

???: "You're Zero, so you can handle this, right? I'm Axl.
Call me (with the {L2} button) if you need a hand."

???: "You're Zero, so you can handle this, right?
I'm Axl. Call me (with the {L2} button) if you need a hand."

Minor formatting change to put "I'm Axl" on the second part of the subtitle in-game.

Zero: "Hmph. Well, this has become a real pain. I want a full explanation
after this is all over!"

ZERO: "Hmph. Well, this has become a real pain. I want a full explanation after this is all over!"

Minor formatting change to move "after this is all over" from being a separate line. Curiously, despite this attention to altering the line placement, the subtitle was not altered to reflect the spoken line in-game which is "when this is all over".

Deep Forest

Area: "We're getting a DNA Core reading. It seems to be emanating from Stoneman."

ALIA: "We're getting a DNA Core reading. It seems to be emanating from Ruinsman."

In all instances where Alia speaks, her name is incorrectly translated as "Area", which was corrected for the final game. The Ruinsman enemy is also referred to as "Stoneman" here. This was changed presumably because there's another robot in this franchise that uses that name.

Unused Stage#

The version of the Boss Cemetery stage present in the prior prototypes is present here and effectively finalized, containing the tombstones and some unique geometry not seen in the other builds.
