The July 8, 1994 build of Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition is much closer to the final than the June 30 build. Still, 11 days before the final build would be locked in, there are still several differences.
Changes since June 30#
General#
- The SEGA logo screen now has the final's T-Rex roar
- Demos now play while idling on the title screen, taking place on the Cargo Ship and Savanna. Debug mode is still active, so you can mess with it using controller 2 - though they don't exactly demonstrate stellar gameplay to begin with.
- The collectibles screen now shows when starting a new game.
- Sam Powell's entry for Sound and Music is now correctly shown in the credits sequence.
- Sound FX now has its toggle in the Options menu.
- The player is now given the final's 5 lives on easy difficulty, 4 lives on normal, 3 lives on hard.
- Exiting the River Run level via debug controls will load into Burning River rather than returning to the stage select. Upon exiting Burning River, River Run will be shown as "AREA SECURED" (though it can be re-selected with debug controls)
- The Species Saved lists now update correctly.
- Items dropped from fallen enemies will now fall to the ground.
- Upon getting a game over, the game now properly sets the number of lives when starting a new game without having to reset the console.
- The Raptor's attacks now do the correct amount of damage.
- Grant no longer starts off with all weapons and ammo.
Graphical#
- Grenade pickups now use the final's "grenade box" graphic rather than the ammo box.
- Many graphical fixes:
- The crankshaft in Cargo Ship no longer has a garbage tile.
- Grant's arm is no longer garbled while piloting a raft in River Run and Burning River.
- The broken tiles in Hidden Ruins are fixed.
Items#
- 1-Up medkits are now properly implemented, with final graphics.
- The candy bar is now implemented with its final graphic.
Sounds#
- The Credits screen now plays a completely unused and hilariously out-of-place tune.
- The Raptor now has her roar.
- The Raptor's kick attack now plays a strange "whoosh" sound, but can also glitch out and instead play a digital sound effect, usually a pteranodon's cry.
Levels#
Aviary
- Grant now starts off already being carried by the pteranodon, like the final.
- It is possible for Grant's sprite to become bugged and appear to be falling and take damage normally while still in the pteranodon's grip. His sprite may even slowly descend, but firing a weapon shows that the effect is purely cosmetic.
- Grant can fire up diagonally.
- The pteranodon now drops Grant at her nest, like the final.
- The ammo belt is now placed as in the final.
- Loitering at the nest will still cause the pteranodon to pick Grant back up and immediately drop him.
- The pteranodon will actively avoid flying through the nest like the final, but will fly much more slowly, likely as a precaution to prevent the script from breaking (it was faster in the June 30 build, and is much faster in the final).
- Navigating around the nest manually to avoid this trigger can make the pteranodon drop Grant at much higher Y-levels than normal.
- The level exit is now implemented for both Grant and the Raptor.
Cargo Ship
- Lightning is no longer displayed at the top layer, but still appears overtop cargo containers.
- The level exit now exists for both Grant and the Raptor.
- Sliding down the ladder will result in hitting the level exit trigger rather than beginning the flooding sequence.
- The Raptor will be kicked back to level select.
- The Raptor's mirror-match opponent is now much more difficult to kill, like the final.
Savanna
- Grant's ducking animation while riding the gallimimus is now implemented.
- Firing while riding the Gallimimus now has your projectiles on a downward arc like the final.
- While many of the bugs regarding the fences have been resolved, it is possible for the gallimimus to be pushed into the terrain slightly, which results in an inability for Grant to fire while mounted and grounded.
- While raptors will continuously spawn, they will not catch up with you if you keep going.
- SO MANY PTERANODONS WILL SPAWN from X 0600 to 0750 and X 1000-1150
- The level exit is implemented at X 1930.
- Despite this, there is a green InGen soldier chilling in a tree at X 1944. He's just happy to be here.
- Bypassing the level exit with debug movement and leaving the map at X 1951 will cause the game to crash.
- The helicopter's rate of fire has been substantially reduced, now only allowing one projectile on screen at a time.
- It will, however, sometimes dump napalm barrels rapid fire.
Hidden Ruins
- Pteranodons are largely absent, either for performance or difficulty balancing purposes.
- There is no longer any chance for a double-triceratops glitch ride - A hole was placed between them.
- The final triceratops ride no longer has two breakable pillars at the end.
- The level exit is implemented.
- Using debug controls to leave through the inaccessible pocket at 0431, 0045 or atop the wall at 0431, 0015 will still crash the game.
River Run
- The pteranodons appear far more well-behaved, but still spawn in large numbers as you progress.
- Getting a game over on River Run as Grant will progress the player to Burning River with 0 lives.
Burning River
- Dying on Burning River with 0 lives (by getting here by dying on River Run with 1 life) will return the player to River Run with a glitched lives counter, wrapping over to the maximum.
- Collecting a 1-Up by returning to the stage select and choosing another stage will result in the lives counter rolling back over to 0.
- The level exit is implemented - Kicks you out to the level select.
