There are dozens of sound files never used in the retail game. Some include full conversations, and many have generic voices that were to be re-recorded later. Several conversations in the retail version were shortened from the prototype.

Scripted Sequences#

Boxcar Joe#

Despite the header saying otherwise, Boxcar Joe was named Boxcar Phil according to the name of the sound files played here. This earlier version of the sequence has a couple of differences to note:

  1. Boxcar Phil doesn't know who Gordon is.
  2. Instead of leaving the fate of the two characters unknown, this version shows that, at least originally, they were killed by the Metro cops.

Watch on YouTube

Eli's Lab#

There are many significant differences of note in this sequence:

  1. This takes place after Ravenholm, rather than before.
  2. According to multiple lines from Alyx, Gordon would've trekked through the Antlion caves before reaching the lab.
  3. A significant portion of the lines in this sequence are different, very few of them carry over to the final release.
  4. Eli gives you the Gravity Gun tutorial instead of Alyx.
  5. Since Ravenholm took place before this sequence, Gordon and Alyx don't get separated.
  6. There's a Vortigaunt that tells Gordon and Alyx what happens to Eli at the end.

Kleiner's Workshop#

A folder that contains an early conversation between Kleiner and Barney that are dated from February 6/11th 2002. Please note that you can hear a bit of the director's voice at the end of certain audio files.

barney_01.wav

Hey doc! Dr. Kleiner! Look who's here!

kleiner_02.wav

Blast that little- where did she get to?

kleiner_03.wav

Lamarr, come out of there!

barney_04.wav

Doc, someone's here to meet you.

kleiner_05.wav

What is it Barney, another fugitive? You can't keep dragging in every stray you-

kleiner_06.wav

Oh my goodness.

barney_07.wav

Heh, heh! I thought that would get your attention.

kleiner_08.wav

Is- is it really? I just- Gordon Freeman!
I had given up hope, it is Gordon, isn't it?
And why, why on Earth did you bring him here, Barney?
If they follow him here, my work is ruined!

barney_09.wav

It's okay doc, relax! So far we haven't set off any alarms, though we should keep moving.

kleiner_10.wav

Well, if you say so.
But I really think this is most unwise.
It could jeopardize not only Gordon's mission, but years of my research.

barney_11.wav

Don't mind him, Gordon. We've all been on edge.

kleiner_12.wav

I- I do apologise, Gordon, of course I'm delighted to see you.
Absolutely delighted! You look a bit pale, but nothing like-
My god Barney, they'll be scouring the city, are you sure it's worth the risk?

kleiner_13.wav

My god Barney, they'll be scouring the city, are you sure it's worth the risk?

barney_14.wav

Just get him in his suit, and I can get him off to Eli's.

kleiner_15.wav

Eli's? But, Dr. Mossman has been waiting for him.

barney_16.wav

Oh, and how is that supposed to work exactly?

kleiner_17.wav

I'll have to call her right away, I'm sure she'll think of something.
I must say, it's unfortunate they couldn't have found a way to deliver you directly to Kraken Base.
It's extremely secure.

barney_18.wav

Eli's place is a hell of a lot closer.
But I'm not taking Gordon out in his Civvies.

kleiner_19.wav

Excellent point, yes. The sooner you're suited up, the better.
Let's brush the dust off the old outfit, shall we?

kleiner_20.wav

I expect you'll be pleased to see this after your hazardous journey.

kleiner_21.wav

I can't vouch for the carbonation, but still there's a choice of diet or regular.

barney_22.wav

Knock it off, doc!

kleiner_23.wav

I just thought Gordon might be a bit parched.

barney_24.wav

You are an odd doc.

barney_25.wav

Here we go- AUGH! Get that thing away from me!

kleiner_26.wav

Lamarr, there you are!

barney_27.wav

I thought you got rid of that pest!

kleiner_28.wav

Certainly not. Never fear, Gordon!
She's de-beaked and completely harmless.
The worst she might do is attempt to couple with your head, fruitlessly.

barney_29.wav

I don't know how you can stand to keep that thing around.
After what it did to your partners-

kleiner_30.wav

Lamarr never hurt a fly, she was raised in captivity.

barney_31.wav

(Shuddering)

kleiner_32.wav

Here, my pet. Up, up, up- no! Not up there!

barney_33.wav

Dammit, get it off me!

kleiner_34.wav

No, no, those are quite fragile! Be careful Lamarr. Dear me.

kleiner_35.wav

Oh, fi! It'll be another week before I can coax her out of there.

barney_36.wav

Maybe I can convince her to stay longer.

kleiner_37.wav

Well, Gordon, go ahead. Slip into your suit, now.

kleiner_38.wav

Gordon, if you please. I'm eager to see if your old suit still fits.

kleiner_39.wav

Gordon, the longer you delay, the greater the danger to us all.
You understand better than anyone the importance of my work.
Please, get into your suit now.

kleiner_40.wav

Please, Gordon, put on your suit!

barney_41.wav

It's time to suit up, Gordon.

barney_42.wav

Get your suit on, Gordon.

barney_43.wav

I'm with Dr. Kleiner on this one, Gordon.
We don't have time to fool around. Get your suit on!

kleiner_44.wav

Well, Gordon, I see you've slipped into your HEV suit.
I've made a few adjustments, but still in all, it should be the suit you remember.
Let's familiarise you with the basic functions, then we can be on our way.

kleiner_45.wav

Now, over here you will see a collection of charging mechanisms.
We have enabled the HEV suit to draw power from a variety of common Combine charging systems, using a standard UBC interface.
This will allow you to avail yourself with the same devices utilised by the Metropolice and Combine military.

barney_46.wav

So always look for the Combine label!

kleiner_47.wav

At any rate, power up your suit and we'll move on to health practices.

kleiner_48.wav

Any one of these will power up your suit, Gordon.
Just step in close and use the device.

kleiner_49.wav

Go ahead and charge your suit, Gordon.

kleiner_50.wav

Very good.

kleiner_51.wav

Now the same interface is often useful in treating injuries.
If you come across a Combine Automedic like this one, you seem to be slightly fatigued, why don't you go ahead and administer some healing agents as well?

kleiner_52.wav

Go ahead, Gordon. Try out the Automedic.

kleiner_53.wav

That ought to make you feel much better.

barney_54.wav

Okay gang, time's a wasting.
I'm gonna need to send word out to Eli and smooth the way for Gordon to get out of town.

kleiner_55.wav

I told you Barney, I intend to solicit Dr. Mossman's advice.
I doubt she'll approve of sending him into the wilderness.
As much as I agree, he would be safer outside the city.

barney_56.wav

Look doc, I don't tell you how to conduct your experiments. So don't you tell me how to run my operation.

kleiner_57.wav

Ordinarily, I would agree, but Gordon is a special case.
We can't just send him into the wilderness with a sharpened stick and our best wishes.
He needs to go somewhere his education can be put to good use.
Now let's proceed, shall we? This way, Gordon.

Kleiner's Teleporter#

The next scene following Kleiner's Workshop is this one.
It is much more dialogue heavy and features Dr. Mossman, who was originally voiced by Mary Kae Irvin (female citizen voice actress). Alyx and Eli are not present in this sequence.
As there are too many audio files to be documented here the full conversation is available on video (with a transcript included as well).

Dialogue

Kleiner

This should only take a moment.

Barney

Mossman's just gonna tell you what I've been saying:
get him to Eli's place and Eli can take it from there.

Mossman

Kleiner, is that you?

Kleiner

Yes, good morning Elena!

Mossman

Did you call to chat, or is there some point to this?
I’m running a critical sequence right now.

Kleiner

Well, I think you'll agree this is critical as well,
I'm standing here with my old protege, Gordon Freeman!

Mossman

Are you kidding me? Freeman? What's he doing there!?

Kleiner

Well, it's a bit of a mystery, actually.

Mossman

You're telling me he's in City 17!?
That's the worst place he could be!

Kleiner

It was a surprise to me as well, I assure you!

Barney

Tell her I'll smuggle him out to Eli's place!

Kleiner

Uh- we were wondering if Eli's colony might not
be the best place for him right now,
as my man here points out.

Barney

Your man?

Kleiner

It has the advantage of being much more accessible than Kraken.

Mossman

Accessible!? You mean vulnerable,
they'll be crawling all over those rocks if the Combine gets wind of him!
No, we need to get him down here where it's safe and I can put him to work.
Eli's facilities are too primitive to make use of him.
They're more suited to mechanics than research scientists.
No, just port him over,
I'll clear the receiver for the transmission.

Kleiner

P- port? As in, teleport?

Mossman

Yes, is something wrong?
I've run seven sequences without a single failure!
The initial protocol you developed,
and then another I devised with the new specs.
And don't tell me of all people, you aren't functional yet?

Kleiner

Certainly not- I mean, I certainly am!

Barney

What!?

Mossman

Since you declined to reconsider your treatment of the
boring, old vector bundles,
I've been operating under the assumption that you're far ahead of me.

Kleiner

No- everything here is in complete order I- uh-
I'd like to see your new protocol,
did you make use of my suggestions regarding Calabi-Yau space?

Mossman

A- another time, Kleiner.

Kleiner

Certainly, Barney, the rotor coils will need your attention, as before.

Barney

You're not serious!

Kleiner

Gordon, you heard Dr. Mossman,
they can make immediate use of your expertise at Kraken Base,
and this is the swiftest way of getting you there.

Barney

But, doc! The last time you tried this-

Kleiner

I've made major strides since then, Barney, major strides.

Mossman

Is there a problem?

Kleiner

No! No problem!

Barney

I'm telling you, we should be heading for Eli's!

Kleiner

His teleport is still in pieces,
you've got no way to get there except on foot!

Barney

Sometimes the old ways are the best!

Kleiner

Well, Gordon,
since it appears Barney would rather call you a Taxi cab,
than trust us in our area of expertise...

Barney

Alright, alright doc. But I gotta tell you,
I've got a baaad feeling about this.

Kleiner

Gordon, if you will be so good as to climb up and manipulate the crystal insertion device.
I'm not sure if you've had much opportunity to take part in a real scientific enterprise in the last decade, so this ought to be rather nostalgic for you.

Sky#

This section contains a sequence for the cut chapter 'Vertigo' in some unknown time after the start of the chapter when Gordon and Alyx survive a helicopter crash. The audio files were recorded on November 1st, 2000 and follows two unknown soldiers who were called to check if there were any survivors left in said plane crash. The voice actor for these soldiers is also unknown.

Careful where you step!

2sky_sol2.wav

Just waiting for the smoke to clear.
Okay, let's go!

3sky_sol1.wav

Did you see that girl before they took her?
It looked like she was talking to someone down below.

4sky_sol2.wav

What are the odds two people survive this crash?

5sky_sol1.wav

She didn't fly in it alone you know?

6sky_sol2.wav

No, but I don't have any trouble believing the others were in little burnt pieces right now.

7sky_sol1.wav

Eh, don't get cocky.
Little burnt pieces have a way of biting you in the ass.

8sky_sol2.wav

Shh! You hear that?
Is something down there?

9sky_sol1.wav

Well I don't see anything.
But let's not take any chances.

10sky_sol2.wav

Okay, found some stairs. Let's head down!

11sky_sol1.wav

Nothing, nothing, and more nothing.
I don't know what they expect to find up here.
Down lower, maybe.
I heard reports that this place was being used as a supply cache for the underground.
But NO citizen is gonna waste time climbing all the way up here. I don't care how disgruntled they are!

12sky_sol2.wav

Nothing ever came of those reports.
But look at it this way! That was a Rebel chopper that just crashed up there.

13sky_sol1.wav

Yeah, and?

14sky_sol2.wav

You ever had your hands on any of the weapons these guys are supposedly armed with?
Suddenly it's not just rocks and bottles and molotovs!
They've tapped into some old ammo dump or something.
They're turning up with contraband we'll never get permission to carry!

15sky_sol1.wav

You think we might find some of that stuff up here?
We'd have to turn it in though!

16sky_sol2.wav

I won't tell if you won't.
You wanna go up against these mobs with a Stunstick and a truncheon, be my guest.
If I find a Rocket Launcher, I'm keeping it. With or without the Consul's blessing.

17sky_sol1.wav

What we really need is some of the Combine tech.

18sky_sol2.wav

Forget about that.
It won't even respond unless you've got some kind of messed up nervous system. No thanks!
Here, lets check out this room, stuff has kinda fallen down from the upper deck.

18sky_sol2t.wav

Eh, looks like a room is back there if we can get through this wall.

Old recording from an earlier version of the sequence

19sky_sol1.wav

This wall's sealed off pretty good by rubble. Let me blow it open.

19sky_sol1t.wav

Let me blow it open!

Vienna#

The folder sounds/vo/vienna contains soundbites for a scripted sequence that never got used in the final game, one where 3 hobos, named Pettigrew, Fludd and Regis, are arguing about a can of food. This sequence is better known as the "botulism" scene, as the hobos are arguing about whether or not the food has been infected with the disease.

The following sounds are ordered by their appearance within the source files for the map they appear in (d1_under_03).

hobo2_aintgotwhat.wav

hobo3_youknow.wav

hobo3_what.wav

What?

hobo2_whichisit.wav

Well fellas? Dinged, swole up? Which is it?

hobo3_dontremember.wav

I don't remember, let's have a look at that can... Well shit, this can's all swole up and dinged in.

Ah figgers, we're screwed either way.

hobo3_lifeinhands.wav

hobo1_highblood.wav

hobo3_highblood.wav

High blood pressure? No one dies from that anymore!

hobo2_gastro.wav

I thought gastrointestinal stasis was the silent killer.

hobo3_nopebotch.wav

Nope, it's botulism!

hobo2_stilleatinit.wav

I'm still eatin' it!

hobo1_hepc.wav

What about Hepatitis C? People still die of that don't they?

hobo3_aintsilent.wav

Yeah, but that ain't exactly silent.

hobo2_mansgotpoint.wav

Man's got a point!

hobo1_shutupeat.wav

Shut up and eat yer botulism!

hobo2_vienna.wav

Shit! Vienna Sausages? I can't eat these!

Characters#

Alyx#

Early voicelines for Alyx, who based on some of their metadata are dated October 28/30th, 2000. Noted in the sound scripts to be used for multiple purposes, most notably some were made for the "vertigo" level on the rooftops of City 17. And some for a Citadel level, revealing a line meant to be spoken to the Consul. alsky.wav is a rerecorded version of skyscraper.wav, that not only has a actress that sounds like the final one, but the dialogue was also tweaked as well. Many of these sound files also have a low bitrate version that end with the suffix 'lwv'.

'CS' lines#

This section contains completely unused voicelines and sounds for the Combine Soldier, these files all start with the prefix 'cs_', hence the name of this part of the page. Unlike the rest of the sounds and lines, they are voiced by John Patrick Lowrie (the VA for the male citizens) instead of Kelly Bailey, the VA for the final game's Combine Soldiers. They are also unfiltered and the date of creation is May 1st, 2003. The metadata also confirms that these are voiced by John Lowrie as the comment/DESCRIPTION tags say 'john lowry' followed by a number.

These voicelines contain many different slang terms such as 'Morty' 'Rags' and more that don't get said by the final version of the Soldiers.

Odell#

November 1999#

Early on, a guy named "Odell" would have taken you around the Hyperborea and introduce you to the game. These recordings were done by a developer around November 11/16/20th, 1999 based on their metadata.

July 2002#

The Hyperborea was then reworked to become the Borealis, a location that took place during the third day, and Odell was one of the engineers of the boat that took you around it. While remnants of this concept exist in the devtest.bsp map, none of these voicelines are used there. They all respectively have the July 17/23/24/25th, 2002 dates in their metadata.

Metropolice#

There are two folders in sounds/npc/ for the metropolice, there's one that the prototype uses (metropolice), and another that contains the original recordings for a lot of the lines spoken by them (metropolice_new). The voice lines for metropolice_new were spoken by Dennis Bateman, as evidenced by, again, the metadata saying 'dennis bateman' in the comment tag. The rest of the voicelines were voiced by Kelly Bailey, according to Marc Laidlaw1.

Unused Sounds#

The metropolice sound folder contains many different cut sound effects and spoken lines for the Metrocops, ranging from unused sound effects, to lines for an entire question and response system that got cut in the final game. This section will be split into subsections due to the amount of content in this folder alone.

Question and Response lines

The folder has a lot of cut dialogue for metrocops, where they'd say a line and another cop would respond to it. These go completely unused in the final game.

Interestingly, there are an alternate set of lines with the prefix "mc2" (instead of "mc1") that is the same as the first set, minus the voice filter.

TestCitadel#

The folder sounds/testcitadel has many different soundbites for the Citadel that goes unused in the prototype. These contain sound effects and ambient noises.

Hit sounds#

The folder contains 4 sounds labelled 'HitX.wav' where X is a number 1 through 4. The names of these files suggest that the Citadel was originally going to be a living organism (at least partially), where hitting it with a crowbar or other weapon would cause it to make the noises below.

Trans6#

This sound has been the subject of much discussion. It has since been found2 to be a reversed and reverbed numbers station recording in the 1997 compilation project The Numbers Racket3, listed as Atencion Station with three messages (ENIGMA V2). The following is the start of the original recording, saying "Atención 80523 32531 60801". Here is a reversed and reverbed version of the original recording made to resemble Trans6.

A couple of rumours have circulated about the origins of this sound.

  • The first is the claim that this sound is heavily edited and distorted from a recording of disputed veracity by the Judica-Cordiglia brothers that is supposedly of a Soviet cosmonaut communicating with mission control as her spacecraft burned up in the Earth's atmosphere upon re-entry.
  • The more recent rumour is that it is sourced from the recording "Ready Ready 15728" from The Conet Project, a collection of number station recordings spanning from 1992 to 1997 used for other sounds in the "Trans" series. Though this is closer to the truth, this recording is in English while the true original recording is in Spanish and not included in The Conet Project.

Other ambient noises#

The rest of the soundbites included in the folder are a bunch of ambient noises, they are all listed down below with their respective filenames.

Unused Music & Stingers#

In the 'sounds/temp/' folder, there are multiple folders for different placeholder sounds and lines. For this section, there are two folders of interest being focused on, 'music_test' and 'score_test'.

Unused Song#

In the 'music_test' folder, there exists an 11KHz audio file named 'ambient1.wav', containing a completely unused piece of music.

Multiple people (especially on YouTube) have claimed that this song was to be used for the cut Air Exchange chapter of the game, however no-one on the dev team of the game has ever confirmed this, and there's no evidence of this being the case in the game, nor in the game files.
