Garry's Mod (2012)

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This page details one or more prototype versions of Garry's Mod (2012).

The early forms of Garry's Mod might be different than you remember...

To do:
Investigate other game builds - much of this article seems to be based on 8 alone.

Garry's Mod 1

The title screen for Garry's Mod 1 had the default look from Half-Life 2, with the exception of the title reading Garry's Mod and being in a different font. The "New Game" button is meant to start the map d1_trainstation_02, but this requires Half-Life 2 to be mounted via its GCFs (not its VPKs).

Garry's Mod 5

The title screen now has the word Five on the right (for Garry's Mod 5). The 'Find Servers' and 'Create Server' buttons common to many Source games at the time make their first appearances, allowing easy access to (very rough) multiplayer. New Game now leads to gm_construct, which is included.

Garry's Mod 8

A new font and a new, non-Half Life 2 background, now showing the Physics Gun on a plain white background. Because of this, the menu options are now dark gray instead of white. The "New Game" button has been renamed to "Start Singleplayer Game".

Spawn Menu#

To do:

  • Do the weapon options in the Garry's Mod 5 menu spawn non-functional props, spawn weapon pickups, or just give the player the weapon?
  • Specific additions per version.

The spawn menu is used to spawn in any entities present in mounted games (for example, a chair from Half-Life 2 or a Terrorist from Counter-Strike: Source).

Weapons#

To do:
If anyone does not mind, could someone do some of the weapons?

Physgun#

Image

Notes

The Physgun uses the same model as the Gravity Gun, and the beam is tiny and white. It uses some of the code from the Half-Life 2 September 26th, 2003 leak's own Physgun.

The Physgun now has its iconic blue color. The beam is bluer, slightly larger, and now glows. Its code was modified to make it easier to use.

Pistol#

Image

Notes

Pistol from Version 5

The Pistol in Version 5 is coded to spawn Manhacks and City Scanners in lieu of firing bullets. This version was later added back to the game as the "Manhack Gun," albeit with the alt-fire spawning Rollermines instead of City Scanners.

The Pistol shoots bullets once more. Now this is revolutionary.

Maps#

gm_construct#

To do:

  • Garry's Mod 9 version of Construct.
  • Pictures.

Garry's Mod 3#

gm_construct was added in Garry's Mod 3, released on December 30th 2004. It was initially a simple white map with buttons to spawn ragdolls (the predecessor to the Spawn Menu), some props strewn about, and buttons that took you to Half-Life 2's chapters.

Garry's Mod 3a#

In version 3a released later the same day, Construct was updated to be textured using Half-Life 2 assets rather than having a Matrix themed white room. The original version survived until GMod 4 under the name gm_construct_white.

Garry's Mod 5#

In version 5, gm_construct is quite small, and also the only map available by default. There is now a water area. Because it wasn't possible to spawn vehicles at this time, several Jeeps and Airboats spawn in a garage as part of the map.

Garry's Mod 8#

The map in general has been expanded. The water area is now more natural but smaller. There is a new area on the right, which houses many light testing rooms. There is more sand, and there is now a 3D skybox with buildings from Half-Life 2 in the background.

gm_flatgrass#

Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.

gm_flatgrass, as the name would suggest, is a simple flat area painted with a grass texture. Despite this, it has also seen changes during its lifetime.

Bugs#

To do:

  • When did these first appear and when were they fixed?
  • What causes the Gravity Gun sprite glitch?

Gravity Gun Weapon Switching#

If you grab something with the Gravity Gun and switch to another weapon, an untextured... thing will take the place of the object held. This bug is at least present in version 8.2. Garry's_mod_8.2_bug-error.PNG

Gravity Gun Sprites#

The sprites on the Gravity Gun can sometimes lose their transparency. This bug is at least present in version 8.2. Garry's_mod_8.2_bug_Gravity-gun.PNG

Gamemodes#

To do:
There are WAY more gamemodes to write about. Namely:

  • GM9: LaserDance, Football, Bird Poo, Graveyard, Hide+Seek, Long Sight, Build, GM_Freeze, Tactical Police Cops, Birdman
  • GM10: Pre-Release Proof of Concept Gamemodes: MelonRacer 2000, Nine Tenths, Sidescroller, RTS Test, Barrelmania
  • GM11: Dogfight Arcade Assault

Since the addition of Lua with Garry's Mod 9, there have been many different gamemodes included with the game. Most were eventually removed, for better or for worse.

Garry's Mod 9#

MelonRacer#

Watch on YouTubeCreated by Garry Newman. Each player takes control of their own melon prop, and must drive it through each checkpoint to complete a lap. The first to complete 10 laps wins.

The gamemode originally came with 2 maps:

  • gm_melonrace (by Garry Newman) is a simple loop featuring bumpy ground, pits, and obstacles.
  • gm_melonlockdown (by Garry Newman and Valve) is a version of dm_lockdown from Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, modified to create a precise track for players.

Nine Tenths#

Created by Garry Newman. A remake of a sourcemod he created before the release of GMod 8.

Each player is assigned to one of 2 teams and equipped with nothing but a Crowbar and a Gravity Gun. They must collect the many physics props scattered around the map and bring them back to their team's home base. The team with the most props after 5 minutes wins the game.

Garry's Mod 10#

Garry's Mod Deathmatch#

Watch on YouTubeCreated by Team Garry. A gory arena deathmatch with odd weapon mechanics, like a shotgun that requires a click to pump, or bullets that ricochet off metal textures in a spectacular fashion.

GMDM was included along with the Steam release of Garry's Mod 10, on November 29 2006. It was removed in Update 28 (July 18 2007) for unknown reasons. A v2 update was being developed by Garry both before and after its removal, intended to add more weapons, effects, and realism.12 This version was eventually cancelled and released on garrysmod.org in an unfinished state for other developers to pick up and finish.3

Garry's Mod 11#

MelonRacer#

Watch on YouTubeCreated by Garry Newman. A remake and overhaul of the version featured in GMod 9 with completely different movement mechanics, but more polish overall. New features include a floating baby doll that acts as a compass, and a remade win screen where a crowd of people cheer for you.

On June 11th 2008, an update was made to the other Source engine games which rendered GMod unplayable for a day.4 Facepunch would release update 43 on June 12th to fix the issue, and along with the fix this version of MelonRacer was included as an "example gamemode".5 It's unknown when exactly this version was removed, but it was not included with GMod 12.
