To do:
Explore the battle debug menu more and document the final chapter, especially part 2 and the epilogue.

Known as the 0206 prototype, though it is actually dating from 2003/02/05, this prototype is the earliest Rekka no Ken prototype currently accessible. Even though the 0219 prototype was released not even two weeks later, many differences exist between the builds.

This is a sub-page of Proto:Fire Emblem (Game Boy Advance).

General Presentation#

The title screen differs slightly between prototypes. The 0206 prototype has a different border around the '烈火の剣' text. The title screen shown in the 0219 was used for the final game.

0206

0219/Final

The little "meanwhile, at Location Name" box is different. The darker background makes it a bit more legible. 0219's implementation matches final.

Hearts for Missing Kanji#

0206

0219

A lot of dialogue and story text on the overworld map is missing kanji, for which the affected text strings humorously use the '♡' symbol as a placeholder. In the 0219 prototype, these have been replaced with the correct kanji.

Character Palettes#

To do:

  • Check against 0219.
  • See if any of the FE6 palettes differ from FE6?
  • I think Legault and Matthew don't have palettes for the Assassin class, double check later.
  • Update the Leila palette comparison with a different frame from the animation since you can't see the skirt well in the idle still.
  • Fix the Guy comparison to not use his unarmed idle still.

Character palettes are in an intermediate state of implementation, some characters have unique palettes, a lot are using palettes of similar characters from Fuuin no Tsurugi. There is a palette labeled as being for Arcardo, a boss in Fuiin no Tsurugi who does not have a custom palette, at the end of this list.

Final

Notes

flolina

The color tint of her pegasus was changed.

matthew

The outfit colors now match his portrait in the final.

lino

The name of Nino's palette seems to be a typo in the prototype. The final game corrects it to nino. Her cape and dress swapped colors, which better matches her portrait.

lino

Same notes/changes as her mage palette.

lagarto

The more lavender tint white hair and darker cloak match Legault's portrait better.

laila

Leila has a different color skirt. Final matches her official artwork. (Not that you ever get to see that ingame.)

leyvan

Hair color updated to his final design, outfit color better matches his portrait.

leyvan

Same notes/changes as his hero palette.

lloyd

Clothing is a slightly different shade of blue.

renato

Different outfit color. Renault's portrait matches the final colors in 0206 though.

guy

His outfit is a slightly different shade of blue.

karel

Uses his palette from Fuuin no Tsurugi, which has a slightly different outfit color.

lot

Uses a palette from Fuiin no Tsurugi, though not his, despite appearing in that game... The ID was updated to baltr for final, also.

alcarde

[N/A]

Note that assigning this palette to the Paladin class is an assumption. It is orphaned data and not assigned to any characters or classes.

Arcardo is a Paladin boss in Fuuin no Tsurugi who used a generic palette.

The ID string for Lyn's palette was updated from alicia, an early development name, to lin, though the palette itself is unchanged. For some reason, a lot of the miscellaneous enemy characters are assigned Damas's palette, perhaps because he is the first boss in Fuiin no Tsurugi.

Battle Debug Menu#

The battle debug menu is only available in the 0206 build. To access it, hold L and R and then press B.

The options are as follows:

  • Name: Choose two characters from 1 up to 215 to battle each other. Many of these characters are faceless enemy NPCs, especially on the latter end of the selection. Playable units include Eliwood (1), Hector (2), Lyn (3 and 45) and Jaffar (36). Some story bosses show up, and battling them while in the chapter that boss appears will trigger relevant boss dialogue.
  • Class: Select whether the character is unpromoted or promoted. If a character is promoted to start with, this has no effect.
  • Army: Changes the unit's color. Options are player (1, blue), enemy (2, red), ally (3, green), black army (4, a fourth gray colour likely for arena purposes), link army (5, blue again)
  • Weapon: Changes the weapon type used. If the unit is not compatible with the weapon (like a bow for Eliwood), the battle will not start
  • Action: Select the action each unit will take. The battle takes 'half' a turn, so if both units attack at the same time, the battle will not start. It is also not possible to start a battle if an action like 'dance' or 'heal' is selected for an unit that cannot normally do so.

To change settings, press A, B, L or R. If all the selected options are possible, press Start to view the battle. Once the menu is opened, it is not possible to back out from it, necessitating a hard reset.

Battle Animation Differences#

Watch on YouTubeThe Knight Lord has a different animation for the Durandal. The Blade Lord also has an animation for it, even though Lyn cannot equip the Durandal normally.
