This is a sub-page of Proto:Crash Bandicoot.
The demo of Crash Bandicoot released to the American audience, available on some demo compilation discs. It features Jungle Rollers as a playable level. The modification date of the files suggests that this demo is dated around June 27th, 1996.
General Differences#
Gameplay#
- Crash doesn't have any voice at all, lacking the classic "Whoa!" sound effect when he dies, for example.

- When Crash gets hit, a different sound effect can be heard.
- The idle animation where Crash picks up a Wumpa fruit and throws it up in the air is absent.
- Spinning right after picking up a Wumpa fruit will cause the game not to count it.
- The Wumpa fruit tally is also always displayed when Crash respawns.
- You get knocked back from explosions during Aku Aku invincibility.
- A copyright screen is used in place of the actual loading screen displaying the level name when the demo boots. As a result, when the player leaves the bonus round, the loading screen re-uses the same copyright screen instead.
- Crash doesn't celebrate when a gem is earned.
- There is no sound effect when the acquired gems scroll at the bottom.
- When Crash misses crates, the missed box notice disappears after the last crate falls on Crash's head.
- The confirmation sound when pressing X to continue re-uses the same sound as when moving Crash between levels on the map screen.
Save Screen#
Although not normally accessible, the save menu can be viewed by hacking.

- The background has a different color.
- In the memory card screen, the password prompt reads "Cancel Save" instead of "Password".
- You don't have to wait for the memory card to be successfully read before accessing the password menu.
- The level count says there are 30 levels in total instead of 32.
- The map sound effect is also used here when switching between the menus.
Level Differences#
Jungle Rollers#
- Performing a spin attack next to a roller won't hurt Crash.
Unused Content#
Unused Animations#
Despite the idle animation not playing in-game, the level file contains data not only for the regular idle animation, but also for the extra one exclusive to the Japanese release.
