This is a sub-page of Proto:Counter-Strike (Xbox).

This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

To do:

  • Document the unused Counter-Strike files on the disc.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

The September 5, 2003 preview build of Counter-Strike for the Xbox was compiled over two months before the game's official release date. It is a cut-down demo with only three playable maps: Dust, Italy, and Vostok.

Leftover Files#

Aside from the Xbox build, the disk also contains an unpacked cstrike folder with a modified copy of Counter-Strike 1.6 for the PC. It seems to be an in-development build of the game, containing maps later planned for Condition Zero. The contents are similar to the cstrike_trs folder from the Condition Zero prototype, but at a different stage of development.

Unused Overview#

In the "cstrike/overviews" folder, there's an overview for a "de_kilt02" map not present in either this folder or the Condition Zero prototype. "kilt" refers to Ritual Entertainment level designer Thearrel "Kiltron" McKinney Jr.

When taking a closer look, this map appears to be an early version of a cut Condition Zero map named "de_rubble", which is present in the leaked 2003 build.

Unused Buy Menu Graphics#

In this build, there are unused buy menu graphics for the cut M60 weapon, known here as "MG 60". At this point in development, the weapon's price and stats were not finalized, and are placeholder "???" values.

Different Weapon Sounds#

The Scout and AWP use different sounds in this build. The Scout sound is a truncated version of the Condition-Zero: Deleted Scenes sound while the AWP sound is one that was never used in public builds. The full version of this sound can be heard in a pre-release version of what eventually became Deleted Scenes in a series of videos made by Doug Lombardi. The SG550 sound is also truncated in this build while in the final it is the full sound.

soundtrack.xwb#

This prototype contains a file called "soundtrack.xwb", which has a placeholder sound file. In the retail version only the .xsb counterpart of this file exists, which contains metadata about the sound file, the sound itself is not included.
