This is a sub-page of Proto:Clock Tower (SNES).
This special build of Clock Tower was used in stores to show off the game and let customers try out the gameplay in three designated rooms of the mansion. While images and even a video of the demo in action had appeared online, it wasn't until Team C.U.T.S. got ahold of one of the copies that it became publicly available, being included as a bonus in the Clock Tower: Rewind rerelease. More information and download options are available on Internet Archive.
Gameplay Differences#
The demo begins with the familiar opening slideshow, after which a selection of gameplay scenes will be shown with unique advertising screens in-between before landing on the newly added sample game selection menu. This sequence will keep looping until a selection is made and aside from a few specific moments, it's possible to skip directly to the sample selection at any time by pressing L, B, Y or START.

For these scenes, the more open border is used in the demo, except for the moment right before the insects close-up appears.
Sample Selection#
The three options here will take the player to the music room, the first bathroom and bedroom respectively. The clock hand, which is normally displayed using sprites, is instead displayed as a part of a background layer and appears upside down.
Getting killed or exiting a room will bring up this menu again.
Miscellaneous#
- Interestingly, the close-up of the photo in the bedroom is timed in this demo unlike the retail release where you need to press B or Y to end the scene. This matches the behavior in the PlayStation port of the game. Other than this everything in the rooms behave just as in the full game.
- Most of the unneeded graphics and room assets have been removed to make the demo fit on a 16 megabit cartridge, with the full game being 24 megabits. Some things were left intact however, now being unused.
- All of the portraits used for messages are intact, as is the entire message archive without alterations.
- All of the code and graphics for the retail version's startup screens and main menu remain, except for the routine that plays them in order and reacts to what was picked in the menu. Even the code for loading a save exists and works with no issues since the game still saves whenever a room is loaded.
- The two car endings are also fully intact and can be viewed by using the Pro Action Replay (PAR) code C05CEE01 along with C05CF001 for ending H or C05CF002 for ending G to play when exiting the music room. The endings will be properly registered as unlocked in the save file.
- Bobby can enter all rooms except the kitchen through the door by forcing a chase with the code 7FCE3B02. He can also appear in the courtyard if you change the timer at $7FCC5F to something low like $01 while also using the aforementioned code.
- All walls and interactions were removed from the kitchen and the courtyard.
