Early University Development#
The first expansion pack was teased as early as the July 2, 2004 chat. At that time, five expansion ideas were outlined, where the plan was to release "a couple in each year beginning with the first quarter."1
Some time after release and massive success of The Sims 2 while meeting beyond Electronic Art's high sales expectations, the developmental team were not able to receive a bonus from the higher-ups; this is because they had gone over-budget on another project in development called The Godfather and used the funding from said bonus to cover the project.
A little later on (before there would be a bonus for developing The Sims 2), Electronic Arts would go through mass layoffs, where 900 people left as part of cost-cutting exercises.
Screenshots#
An earlier design for the White Rabbit Bubble Blower is present in one of the prerelease screenshots. This was changed to avoid drug references with the ESRB, according to the internal notes for the object.
