This page details pre-release information and/or media for Bloons Monkey City (Adobe Flash).
Development Timeline#
2012
- Probably when the game was made, according to the settings file and the fact that this game has lots of leftovers from an earlier version of Bloons TD Battles, which released at the end of 2012, so they were probably developed together.
DATE_STAMP = "Tue 11/20/2012.14:33:25.68";
- November 20 - Interestingly, this date stamp is found in the game data. which could be the exact date the game was built. That date is a month before Bloons TD Battles released, further proving that the two games were developed together.
2013
- May 10 - Users like tiny tex on the Ninja Kiwi website had received access to the closed beta of the game (its name was not yet known to the public).1 The first 200 players to sign up for a Ninja Kiwi account on http://staging.ninjakiwi.com were allowed access to the game.
- June 27 - The Auckland gaming convention showcased the game's features, such as Monkey vs. Monkey.2
- August 13 - Confirmations that the game was in development began to appear with footage shared by Ninja Kiwi developers. Some videos were made showcasing the footage.3
- August 21 - The first official teaser by Ninja Kiwi was uploaded on YouTube.4 A blog was made that day as well, explaining the premise of the game.5
- November 25 - Game releases in open beta for all.
Closed Beta Differences#
This section will not cover differences that were in the original 2013 open beta release and changed/removed in later versions.

In the closed beta, the game's logo did not have a registered trademark, and there is a "Delete Save" debug button below the play button. It still exists in the files of the final game.

The Build Panel in the closed beta was formatted differently.

On the game's resource header, the town level and xp were originally separate. There is also a console on the top left which can still be enabled in the files of the final game. The town buttons on the bottom lack detailing and shading.

The MvM panel has a "Refresh" debug button that still exists in the files of the final game.

The MVM attack panel's bloon type modification system worked different from the final release; instead of simply either enabling or disabling all of them, the player could completely erase regen and camo bloons from their attack, send a normal amount of all including lead bloons and MOABs (meaning the mods are disabled), or send lots (meaning enabling the mods). The final system still references all of names: NONE, NORMAL, and LOTS, but only NORMAL and LOTS are used, either for enabling or disabling the mods (the names are never referred to ingame, as the buttons are just checks), meaning you can't disable camo and regen bloons from your attack if they can be spawned.

Later version of the closed beta. On the tile victory panel, it does not list what type of tile the player captured is. This line still exists unused in the final game.

Originally, there was a cost function where the player needed to spend city cash on tiles to attack them, clearly at an early state here as 10 is pitifully low. The missions also have visible difficulties, unlike the open beta and final release.
The in-game panel has significantly different formatting, being based on that of Bloons TD 5. Originally, Special Agents were planned to be included in this game, with the panel's internal name even still referencing them in the final release. The building on the left is very likely called the Tavern, which would have been used to unlock them based on an unused description.
