This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver/Sprites.
Unlike the leaked Platinum repository, overworld sprites were not committed to the HeartGold and SoulSilver repository in the form of scratchpads. They can only be found at pokemon_gs/src/data/mmodel/mmdl_tex (and pokemon_gs/src/data/mmodel/mmdl_tex_poke for follower Pokemon sprites) in their .imd file format, and do not contain any extra data aside from the sprites themselves. That said, there is a fair amount of changes to go over here.

Ethan was the first character in the game to receive overworld sprites. His first version much more closely resembles his design in the original Gold and Silver, especially with the color patterning on the hat, yellow pants, and the design of his backpack. Almost a year later, he got his first revision to make him look more or less like the final, with the exception of a red piece on the back of the hat. Over a year later, that red bit was removed, and his sprites were finalized.

The Team Rocket outfit started out as a mere black color swap before gaining its own sprites in March of 2009. r17155 removed the running sprites, but the next revision, r17198 brought them back. The design was finalized at the start of May, with some patterns and details being added, alongside some slight additional polish.

He originally wore a blue headband that was later recolored to white, and then removed entirely. The first version also comes with running sprites, which were removed next revision.

Lyra didn't have her own sprites until January of 2008, up until which she simply used Dawn's DP sprites. Her sprites only got a very minor fix-up less than 30 minutes after the first commit due to her sideways walking sprites missing the bows on her hat. Her sprites for using the Pokemon Center got fixed to prevent her bag from swapping sides mid-animation.

Much like Ethan's rocket outfit sprites, it initially started out as a rather pathetic black palette swap before getting an actual outfit in March of 2009.

Silver had a brighter color scheme, a slightly different hair style, and actual motion to his hair. The early version more accurately resembles his Gold and Silver design.

|
The player's mother had a completely different design, again being more accurate to her appearance in the original Gold and Silver versions. The only aspect of it that stayed the same is the clothes. Middle revision adjusts the palette slightly and changes her eye color.

r21721 Final (May 8 2009) |

Professor Elm's sprites were basically finalized in the first version. The only change made was a minor color adjustment to his shirt under his lab coat.

The female had her ponytail changed to a bun, possibly to fit in even better with the oriental theme of Johto.

r16877 Final (February 27 2009) |

|
|
|
Falkner was the first gym leader to be added to the game. His first revision makes him slightly taller, and the final only adjusts the south-facing sprites to add white buttons to his shirt.
Chuck#

r17155 (March 4 2009) |
r19947 Final (April 17 2009) |

r11207 (October 19 2008) |
r21721 Final (May 8 2009) |
|---|---|
|
|
|
The male grunt had a different hair color and his uniform lacked some details, such as the line across the hat and visible belt.
r11208 (October 19 2008) |
r17155 (March 4 2009) |
r21721 Final (May 8 2009) |
|---|---|---|
|
|
|
The female grunt originally had green-colored hair instead of purple, which was also a bit longer. This matches their official FireRed and LeafGreen artwork which itself is inconsistent with their in-game sprite, in which their hair has a pink tone similar to this one. March 4 revision updates some of her sprites to add gloves that were missing.

Ho-Oh had some pretty rough graphics at first, but the design of each frame didn't change too much. The main difference are its back feathers being made smaller.

Lugia, on the other hand, had twice as many revisions done to it compared to Ho-Oh. It also began with some rough graphics, which had its tail and head in different positions. The second revision moved its head up a bit to hide the back of its neck, and the final version tweaked some shading details on its wings, spines, and tail while also adjusting the proportions and positioning of its wings in a few frames.
