Older File Formats#

Throughout Metal Gear Rising's development at PlatinumGames, it has went through many different file formats.

WMB (Meshes)#

Metal Gear Rising has 2 unique mesh formats not seen in any other game, WMB4, and the unused WMB2: WMB2: This format is unused in the final game, and a very simple format. This format can only have 1 vertex group, and is the only WMB format to have this restriction. Interestingly, the game does not use or mention WMB3 at all, meaning WMB3 was likely developed sometime in very early MGR development.

RAD#

RAD files control codec dialogue, these were replaced with SYN in the final game. They are used in the demo. Not much is known about these files as modding them isn't very useful.

TRG#

While the final game still uses TRG to control it's logic and flow, in the final game, certain cut R-01 phases use TRG 16, the game cannot and will not load these, specifically printing a debug error requesting TRG 17 instead. The demo also uses TRG 17.
