To do: |
Wizard101 has a lot of unused text. Note that some text may be rearranged for the sake of readability or putting it in the same area where it may be relevant.
Unused level titles
Root.wad\Locale\English\Levels.lang shows level titles that never made it into the live game. Notably, it shows that the level 100 title would have been "Deified" instead of Exalted. Levels between 90 and 99 would have been labeled "Immortal" instead of Promethean which was used in the final game. Levels between 80 and 89 were originally "Transcended" (known as Archmage in the final game), likely a reference to the used Transcendent between levels 70-79. Also oddly present in the same file are 2 strings labeled Zanne, which isn't a level, but rather the name of the Krokotopia Treasure Card vendor.
"Slay Bleebs" quest
|
|
To do: |
Root.wad\Locale\English\QuestSlayBleebs.lang is a file describing a quest that doesn't exist in the game.
1:QuestSlayBleebs
1
Eliminate the Bleeb Manace
10
It is done. They are dead.
11
Take the crown of the Bleeb Leader
2
Sorry lad, you're not up to this task yet
3
Have you done it? Have you killed the little monsters? If I hear one more Bleeb pun, I'm gonna puke.
4
The good hearted bleebs have taken over and are threatening to corner the florist industry. Destroy them all!
5
Collect 10 Bleeb hearts
6
Intact bleeb heart
7
Kill the Bleeb Leader
8
Return to Baklava
9
You have the look of a man who's hands are drenched in blood...
It's unknown where this text originated, but it notably has text that normally wouldn't be shown in any Kingsisle related game. Wizard101 generally uses terms like "defeat" instead of the more blunt "kill". It's unknown what a "Bleeb" is exactly. Baklava is a real word, but it's a type of pastry, so within the context, it doesn't appear to make sense. It's possible that this is some kind of inside joke. There is a Baklava.lang file with the following contents:
1:Baklava
2
High Wizard
Amara
A simple dialogue with a nonexistent NPC named Amara is contained in Root.wad\Locale\English\Amara.lang

Root.wad\Locale\English\ChatTest.lang shows a possible test conversation, potentially for testing quests.

The context is unknown. Notably, there are some typos, like "candlyland" potentially intending to be "Candy Land" (potentially a reference to Karamelle being a world referencing candy), as well as "Goblers" likely intending to be "Gobblers".
Configurator
Root.wad\Locale\English\Configurator.lang shows some text related to settings that cannot be changed, in game or through the settings editor (referred to as Wizard101 Configurator) as well as some used settings.

The master volume CAN be set in Pirate101, but this is not an option in this game. That was likely a leftover included on accident. Neither game allows selecting different speaker setups, likely because that's already something that can be set in the Windows settings.

CrownShop
Interestingly in Root.wad\Locale\English\CrownShop.lang, some text references buying things with crystals. This may have been the game's premium currency before crowns was decided on.
DIConfirmExchangeForCrystals
<left>You are about to exchange the following items for Crowns Crystals. Are you sure? \n$Items$
DIExchangeForCrystalsFailed
Your transaction was not successful.\n Failed to exchange $ItemName$ for Crystals.
DINonEligibleToExchangeForCrystals
None of the items you selected are eligible to be exchanged for Crystals Currency or no items were selected.
Notably, the last section seems to suggest that it would be possible to exchange items to get crystals, which isn't possible in the final game.
DavidDevSpell
Root.wad\Locale\English\DavidDevSpell.lang has the following text:
1:DavidDevSpell
00000000
Pwn
Pwn is a spell that exists in the game, exclusive to developers as the name suggests. According to the Kimerith Windhammer Discord bot, it is a storm version of Fire Cat that deals 1,100,000 damage with 100% accuracy. As almost every boss has less than that amount of health, this would naturally defeat almost any enemy it is used on.
Deduped
Root.wad\Locale\English\Deduped.lang simply only has a line that says
1:Deduped
It's unknown what this means.
DevHubStrings
Root.wad\Locale\English\DevHubStrings.lang mentions what appears to be another test quest or conversation.

chatter01
Hello, my name is #1:$SOURCE_NAME$. Why are you here, #2:$TARGET_FIRSTNAME$?
chatter02
Do not come near #1:$SOURCE_NAME$!! Wait, is that you, #2:$TARGET_FIRSTNAME$?
That's a lot. The first thing of interest is the line "That was totally weak, #1:$NPC_FIRSTNAME$.". This seems to suggest that either the player character would have talked to the NPC (interesting because the character is normally a silent protagonist), or there would be another character with the player character who would have talked to the quest giver NPC.
After this is text mentioning to go to "Duskwood Faire". This isn't the name of any existing NPC or area according to Wizard101 Central. The next line mentions Neverwhere in Wizard City. This is an area that is never seen, but is referenced as part of the Castle Darkmoor expansion which is implied to be a portal taken to get to the Graveyard instance.
The later text strings appear to be part of a quest, likely in Krokotopia due to referencing enslaved manders.
The next thing of interest is the text "Voice of Obi Wan". It's likely a direct reference to the Star Wars character with almost the same name.
The next 2 lines are likely references to player complaints regarding drop rates of defeat and collect quests:
00000031
Infuriating Small Chance Widget Drop
00000032
Kill lots of foozles and maybe get a widget
EarnCrowns
Root.wad\Locale\English\EarnCrowns.lang seems to show messages regarding earning crowns through watching ads. Despite Flash being discontinued since late 2020, this file still exists. The messages appear to walk players through the process of installing the Adobe Flash Player plugin, as well as handling errors regarding failures, like if the user is not an administrator or if they input an incorrect password.
EggNames
EggNames.lang lists all the types of eggs, including ones that are unobtainable. Notably, there are 2 names here that cannot be seen. One of them is literally just named "FALSE". The other is called Make a Wish egg. This egg can only hatch one pet, a Polterpooch. It's impossible to obtain this egg because attempting to hatch with a Polterpooch will never give the player back another Polterpooch, but instead either the original pet or a Ghost Hound.
Help
00000038
Wishing Wells are items in the game allowing you to pay Crowns for a random piece of loot such as a piece of equipment, an Elixir, gold, treasure cards, reagents, or more, as if you'd defeated a monster in a duel.
00000039
To use a Wishing Well, press X to interact with it. You'll be given the option to spend Crowns and take your chances on a piece of loot.
This seems to be a reference to Test Realm in 2010 which showed off a potential Wishing Well feature that ultimately got scrapped due to community feedback.

BuddyListRequestDeny

The final game behaves a lot differently. If a player removes someone as a friend, the game does not tell the person that this happened. The next notable thing is when someone "invites" someone to be their friend. The final game puts up a prompt asking the person if they wish to be friends with clickable Yes or No options without needing to type a message. This may have been used before implementing the yes/no options during development. Lastly, the game does not give a visible message regarding if someone accepts or declines the friend request.

Some are obvious like chess and checkers. Confusingly, there is a game labeled "Tap twentyone". It's unknown what that or SociaStones would have been. Perhaps the latter would have been a 2 player version of Sorcery Stones and Socia is short for "Social". TicTacTecToe potentially may be a variation of tic tac toe played on a 4x4 grid. Games like Checkers and Chess likely were dropped because of how long the games could potentially be. ThreeGo could be a reference to the board game known as Go, although it's unknown how the number three could be involved. A possible guess for Tap TwentyOne is Blackjack, as it's a game centered around the number 21. According to Wikipedia, Blackjack evolved from a game called TwentyOne.

Welcome to the School of Ice
1
Huh? Eh? Well, hello there! Welcome to the School of Ice! \n My name is Professor Ambrose. I will be teaching you Thaumaturgy, the Magic of Ice!\n I'm sure you're as excited about Ice as I am, so let's get started! \n First, let us start with your reading material. This is the ancient Tome of Cracked Ice! \n Hehe... uh... oh my, where did I leave that book? Oh I do tend to be a little forgetful.\n I think I may have left it in the Headmistresses office. Could you retrieve it for me?
2
Well, as much as I'd love to start your lessons, I cannot until you bring me the textbook, the Tome of Cracked Ice, from Headmistress Greyrose's house.
3
Hello, child! \n\n Ha ha. The Ice Tome? Yes, he left it here.\n\n Oh, that Mister Ambrose! So forgetful. What would he do without our help? Okay, here's a copy of the Tome of Cracked Ice.\n\n Tell him I said he's not allowed to take the book outside of his classroom, or else I won't let him visit me for another book reading.
4
You're back! Wonderful! That Greyrose, what would I ever do with out her? \n\n Okay, let us prepare for your first lesson

Howdy! Name's Cornelius. I'm a world famous explorer. I've seen every nook and cranny of nearly every world. Maybe one day you too can be a world class explorer. Let's see if you've got what it takes. Here in Wizard City, they have a Pixie problem. They're EVERYWHERE! They like to hide in the most obscure places. See if you can find all ten of the Pixies.

You haven't found all ten yet. Keep looking.

The first thing of interest is that it mentions going to Unicorn Way and defeating Gobblers. Gobblers do not spawn in that area. Lastly, near the end, the quest giver mentions giving the player Fire Cat and Frost Beetle, which is interesting as fire and ice wizards always start with that spell.
