VS. Clu Clu Land

VS. Clu Clu Land is an arcade version of the Famicom/NES game Clu Clu Land. A home version for the Famicom Disk System was later released under the in-game title Clu Clu Land: Welcome to New Clu Clu Land, and is notable for being the last first-party release for the FDS.

The FDS version would be included as one of the NES games in Animal Crossing under the title "Clu Clu Land D" (the "D" being short for "Disk") and is currently the only release of the FDS version outside of Japan. The arcade version would be released internationally as part of the Arcade Archives series for Nintendo Switch.

Revisional Differences#

VS. Clu Clu Land originally released in Japanese arcades in 1984, the same year as the original Famicom game. The arcade version would later be ported and released for the Famicom Disk System in 1992.

Title Screen#

Aside from the VS. System version using a coin credit system, the title screen features several differences. The ™ symbol in the arcade version was removed from the FDS version. The FDS version features two difficulty options that can be selected by pushing Start for beginner or Select for expert.

The copyright info was moved down in the FDS version with an updated year, though it strangely uses 1988 instead of 1992. This suggests the port was finished by then and was initially going to be released around the same time as other FDS ports such as Donkey Kong and Ice Climber.

Player Select#

The VS. System uses larger text characters and features unique sprites for the 1 and 2 start arcade buttons. The FDS version uses the standard text character and replaces the arcade button sprites with text indicating which button to push. The player options in the VS. System version are mirrored in the FDS version, likely so it better matches a standard controller with the position of the B and A buttons.

"ALL STAR CASTS" in the VS. System version was changed to "ALL STAR CAST" in the FDS version.
