Trojan is what can be assumed as:
- A post-apocalyptic action game about the world's finest wooden horse condoms.
- Capcom's response to Irem's hit, Kung-Fu Master.
Unused Graphics#
The text graphics ROM was built over the Commando text graphics ROM. |
|
Like Commando, high score entry letters spin when shot, but the Rb character doesn't spin. |
|
Four characters that aren't used for this game's new font. There are also identical unused Rb and Ed characters. |
|
An angr- er, peeved bird, and a mouse. Given their limited frames, these would be ornamental objects only. |
Leftover Graphics#
|
|
This page or section needs more images. |
Like Section Z, Trojan has some graphical leftovers from Commando.
- Round count medals
- The first two lines of the PGC message
- Player and grenade icons (lower half only)
The health meter graphics from Section Z were left in the ROM as well.
Version Differences#
There are six different Trojan sets in MAME. They (possibly) seem to follow the chronology below:
US, set 2 |
Romstar, set 2 |
US, set 1 |
Japan, old ver. (Tatakai no Banka) |
Japan (Tatakai no Banka) |
Romstar, set 1 |

Altered |
- trojana is the first US release (and the earliest release) of the game.
- trojanra is the second US release of the game. It's identical to trojana, aside from the altered copyright string on the title screen to reflect the new publisher, Romstar.
- trojan is the third US release of the game. It's the first version to introduce a bugfix present in the two former sets, an in-game level select and a balance on the damage values.
- trojanjo is the first Japanese release of the game. It seems to be based on trojan, as it retains the healthbar bugfix and damage values from that set, but lacking the in-game level select.
- trojanj is the second (and latest) Japanese release of the game. It's clearly based on trojana and trojanra, as it retains the original damage values from those two sets, but it also features the the healthbar bugfix from trojan and trojanjo.
- trojanr is the fourth US release (and the latest release) of the game. It's certainly based on trojanra and trojan, as it doesn't have the in-game level select and features the altered copyright string (due to being published by Romstar) from the former, but it features the healthbar bugfix from the latter. This version alters the damage values even more.

In-Game Level Select#
trojan has a level select menu at the start of the game.
This isn't present in any other version: Instead, there's a dip switch that control which stage the player starts on. By default, the player starts on level 1.

Healthbar Bug#

|
In trojana and trojanra there's a bug on the healthbar where the last bar is slightly cut-off. This is fixed in the other sets.

There're few damage values changes in trojan and trojanjo:
- Slashers' dagger does 3 damage in trojana, trojanra and trojanj, and 2 in trojan and trojanjo.
- Armadillon's armor does 4 damage in trojana, trojanra and trojanj, and 2 in trojan and trojanjo.
In trojanr every single enemy and boss merely does 1 damage.
Oddities#
While the Game Over theme (Track 36) is used in the game, it can't normally be heard, because the game over and continue screens are linked and the game always plays the Continue theme. To hear this track, disable continues (via dip switches in MAME) and lose all your lives. If done correctly, you should hear this theme during the game over screen.
