Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 was the franchise's second attempt to get back into line...with even more disastrous and rushed results. Originally developed as a multiplayer-focused follow-up to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, Activision suddenly shifted the game from a $20 digital exclusive to a full-priced retail sequel to Pro Skater 4, in an attempt to make a quick buck right before their licensing deal with Tony Hawk would expire at the end of 2015.

The result is a depraved imitation of the entries from the series' heyday, with uninspired and rehashed "boxy" level layouts, being devoid of content and merit, and having a severe amount of glitches. It also shows heavy disregard for controversial gameplay decisions, such as the infamous reworked Special Meter and Slam mechanic. All of this lead to the game being among the weakest titles in the franchise's history.

This was also the last Tony Hawk game developed by Robomodo, who went defunct less than a year after this game's release.

Version Differences#

The last-generation releases of Pro Skater 5, incidentally enough, came out after the next-generation mainline versions. The following differences are included:

  • There is no online gameplay. Multiplayer functionality is only used for leaderboards and sharing custom parks.
  • The framerate has been locked to 30FPS and texture resolution has been shrunk down.
  • The post-release levels Mountain, Wild West, and The Underground are not present.
  • The guest skaters Lil' Wayne, Tyler, the Creator and TMNT are omitted.
  • With competitive multiplayer modes removed, the method for unlocking King Graham in the seventh-generation ports is unknown.

Revisional Differences#

Day One Patch#

Users who inserted the game disc on launch day would be greeted with a robust 7.6GB day one patch after the initial 4.3GB installation.

  • The most notable addition is the Mountain level, which is entirely absent without the patch.

v1.03#

Released on November 27, 2015. This was a major update that included new content and changes, plus many bug fixes.

  • Two new levels were added (Wild West and The Underground).
  • Tyler, the Creator and TMNT were added to the skater roster.
  • Visuals and lighting were improved in various levels. Grinds were also updated in several spots.
  • A toggleable option was added to make the Slam only initiate when double tapping the grind button.
  • A toggle was added to enable and disable voice chat.
  • Multiple changes were made to the user interface.
