Hidden Images#
Pause the game, hold L and press C Left, C Down, C Right, C Left, C Down, C Right. A black and white image of a woman will appear. Labeled "janice" in the ROM.
Pause the game, hold L and press Down on the D-Pad, C Left, C Up. A picture of a second woman appears, this time in color. Labeled "dana" in the ROM. Both pictures only get cleared upon returning to the main menu or changing levels. They will overwrite one another.
Regional Differences#
The game was released as Tony Hawk's Skateboarding in Europe because the word "skater" could be confused with an ice skater. Oddly enough, this change made it in the later North American revision.

Changes from Other Versions#
As well as having to be cut down in size due to the Nintendo 64's hardware limitations, (e.g.; Skater introduction videos being wholly removed, songs being heavily compressed; being trimmed or even having no lyrics at all, and the Skater's own sound effects being removed), it also had to be censored in many ways to ensure that it would be released with an E for everyone rating. This was due to Nintendo of America's strict content guidelines for western releases at the time.
General Changes#
- During the commercial for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, the Nintendo 64 version was strangely missing a graphic for a sign that stated 'No skateboarding.' This may have been because Nintendo were attempting to avoid references to teens breaking the law. These textures are present in the Downtown level, however, where one of the objectives is to run down such signs.
- All the blood textures were removed.
- Some gaps and grinds in the N64 port had their names changed:

Description |
|---|---|---|
Holy Shi... |
Holy Cow! |
Gotten after grinding the extension of the top border of the quarter pipe at the back of the Warehouse. |
Long Ass Rail |
Big Daddy Rail |
In the School, going down the right-hand ledge of the path leading from the gym's courtyard to the pools. |
Handi Gap |
Spiky Gap |
Transferring between quarter-pipes over a handicap ramp in San Francisco. |
Characters#
Private Carrera, a secret, (only accessible through a cheat code), unlockable skater that appears in both Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, was heavily edited text-wise in the N64 port; her actual character model was not changed. Her age was changed from the PS1 release's suggestive "Barely Legal" to the very-much-legal age of 41 in the N64 version.
When it comes to her board selections, 7 of the 8 selectable set-ups had their names changed from innuendo to something more innocuous:
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
Erector Set |
Yes Mamm |
Likely changed due to the name 'erector set' being a not so hidden nod to the word "erection". |
Changed to "Yes Mamm" to avoid the reference. |
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
Viagra Falls |
Thank You Bob |
Viagra Falls, a play on the area Niagara Falls, and an obvious reference to the medication "Viagra". |
Changed to a reference towards another secret unlockable Skater, Officer Bob. |
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
Man Handler |
Hot Stuff |
Somewhat of a possible reference to Private Carrera's character. |
Changed to...something that pretty much references Private Carrera's overall character, but isn't as blatant. |
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
Feelin' Blue |
Miss Devastation |
Possibly a reference to the term "blue" having something to do with.. certain adult activities. |
Just a general censor. |
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
New Member |
Crazy Stats |
Either a reference to the fact Carrera is a new character, or...you get the gist. |
Because she has craaaazy stats! |
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
Solid Wood |
Foxy Lady |
Judging by the previous names, this one should be a given - use your imagination. |
Pretty much the same change as "Hot Stuff". |
PlayStation 1 |
N64 |
|---|---|
Skate Hard |
Skate Mean |
Skate Hard seems to be a reference to...well. |
Changed due to the euphemism the term "hard" could imply. |
Oddities#
Unknown Feature#
Watch on YouTubeWhen you save a career with a certain name, several strange things happen. After entering the name, the sound when performing a special trick will play, all in-game messages will change to the nonsensical string which will differ depending on which name was entered, and the game will freeze sometimes. There's a total of 2,170 names that will activate this which can be seen on the notes page. Whether this is a bug or an unfinished/broken feature is currently unknown.
