This is a sub-page of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Majora's Mask not only contains a variety of unused actors and objects, but some of the used actors and objects have unused variables.

Codes#

Before You Begin#

You can try loading these unused files yourself using the codes below. There are several rules to keep in mind:

  • Replace "oooo" with the object number.
  • Replace "aaaa" with the actor number.
  • Replace "vvvv" with the variable number.
  • Unless stated otherwise, assume the variable is 0000.
  • To load an actor that uses object 0002, you must be outdoors.
  • To load an actor that uses object 0003, you must be in a dungeon.
  • To load a new actor, you must exit and reenter the map.

The following two GameShark codes will also come in handy. Both are for Majora's Mask (U) 1.0.

Actor

Object

004E

0077

This actor is linked to an unused object called object_heavy_object. The actor is present only in the Japanese 1.0 version of Majora's Mask at 00D73180 - 00D73500.

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to contain the heavy rock from Ocarina of Time that Link can only lift using the Golden Gauntlets but Goron Link was programed with the Golden/silver gauntlets properties, making him the only one who can lift the rock.

However, the code being only programed for cutscenes it doesn't know what to do after Goron Link throws the heavy rock making you softlock in place.

As for the rock animation it was programed with keyframes just to do the effect the rock is moving further away but laking of those keyframes in the actor, the rock will stay on the same position where it was lifted at first.

Oceff_Spot#

Actor

Object

00CC

0001

This actor contains the Sun's Song effect. Its name translates to "Ocarina Effect - Spot".

This effect can be seen in-game if one uses codes to enable the Sun's Song to be able to be played with the Ocarina.

Shot_Sun#

Actor

Object

00D0

0001

This actor shares a filename with the Ocarina of Time actor Shot_Sun. In Ocarina of Time, the actor was shared by two objects: the morning sun that must be hit to obtain the Fire Arrows, and the green Navi spot where a Red Fairy can be spawned by playing the Song of Storms.

The actor is completely unused, and all of its code is leftover from Ocarina of Time. The Fire Arrow target works as intended, however the green Navi spot is dummied out in the code, and for good reason: this code will crash the game if re-enabled because it tries to spawn an actor that no longer exists in Majora's Mask (the sparkle effect when the Red Fairy appears).

Oceff_Wipe#

Actor

Object

00D6

0001

This actor contains the Zelda's Lullaby effect. Its name translates to "Ocarina Effect - Wipe".

Oceff_Wipe3#

0001

This actor contains the Saria's Song effect. Its name translates to "Ocarina Effect - Wipe 3".

En_Hs2#

Actor

Object

00E7

0001

This actor's name indicates that its function is related to En_Hs, the actor for Grog.

The actor's code is almost completely dummied out. As such, when loaded in-game, it appears as nothing more than a Z-targetable blue spot.

En_Zo#

Actor

Object

00F8

00D0

This actor is linked to a used object, object_En_Zo, which contains generic Zora NPCs.

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to be a Zora that walks in place and cannot be interacted with. However, if you replace the dog mentioned at the top of this page with En_Zo, He will walk around in a random path. It has a strange circular shadow around its middle.

En_Zl4#

Actor

Object

00FD

0192

This actor is linked to a used object, object_En_Zl4, which contains Skull Kid. It shares a filename with the Ocarina of Time actor En_Zl4, which is the actor for Child Zelda in the courtyard of Hyrule Castle. The filename translates to "Zelda 4".

When loaded in-game, it causes the game to freeze.

This needs some investigation.

Obj_Chikuwa#

Actor

Object

0114

00ED

This actor is linked to a used object, object_Obj_Lift, which contains the elevators in the basement of Dampé's House. Its filename, "chikuwa", means "bamboo ring", a word also used to describe a tube-shaped cake made of fish paste, perhaps owing to its shape. The Mario series features a similar object also referred to as "chikuwa", where they are known as Donut Lifts in English translations (another possible origin of the name, given the similar behavior).

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to be a long row of blocks that crumble, one after another, when Link approaches the chain. If approached fast enough, the player can walk on them.

En_Boj_01#

Actor

0001

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_boj, which contains Sakon, the peddler in green, the man on top of the lookout tower in Kakariko Village, the two laughing men, and the thin bearded man. Its filename translates to "B: Middle-Aged Guy - 01".

In this game, the functions associated to this actor are all empty, so when loaded in-game, it appears as nothing more than a Z-targetable blue spot.

En_Boj_02#

En_Cne_01#

Actor

Object

0122

0001

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_cne, which contains a thin woman in a blue and yellow dress, and a thin woman in a blue dress, both of which appear in Hyrule Castle Town Market. Its filename translates to "C: Lady - 01".

Normally, when loaded in-game, only a blue Z-target spot appears. The actor will only work properly if she is paired with the correct object, object_cne (00DA), as seen in the video.

She is able to follow a path, and when the player tries to talk to her, it will attempt to display text ID 0x10B9, which has no text, and results in an empty box. She also has a dynamic shadow (which a few other actors in the game have, such as the signs Link can break).

Curiously, the player can also interact with her by giving her Magic Beans. She will substract one magic bean from the inventory, and then will talk to the player, also with text ID 0x10B9, which will just show an empty textbox.

This actor has a similar filename to an Ocarina of Time object called object_bba, which contains the old woman in white and red who appears in Hyrule Castle Town Market. Its filename translates to "C: Old Lady - 01".

When loaded in-game, nothing appears. The actor will only work properly if she is paired with the correct object, object_bba (00DF), as seen in the video.

Much of her code is similar to that of another unused actor, En_Cne_01. En_Bba_01 also has a dynamic shadow, attemps to load text ID 0x10B9 when speaking, is able to follow a path, and she interacts with the player when giving her Magic Beans as well.

This actor was probably written with Ocarina of Time's object_bba's skeleton in mind, and so this actor has some visual bugs. For example, her right arm and bag follow the player instead of her head and torso.

This actor is linked to an unused object called object_Obj_Funen, which contains a plume of smoke. Its filename translates to "Incombustibility".

En_Fg#

Actor

Object

0147

00BC

This actor is linked to a used object called object_En_Minifrog, which contains the game's frogs. Its filename translates to "Frog".

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to contain a yellow frog that jumps up and down. It cannot be interacted with, even if Link is wearing Don Gero's Mask. Looking at the code reveals that this actor has all the appropriate functions for getting hit by Link's attacks, but because its hit collision is disabled, it cannot hit Link, nor can Link hit it with his weapons, and it doesn't have an attack routine programmed in any form.

It seems that the frogs were supposed to be enemies before they were retooled as part of a sidequest to obtain the Don Gero's Mask. Note that the used frogs use a different actor (En_Minifrog).

Dm_Sa#

Actor

This actor is linked to a used object, object_En_Zl4, which contains Skull Kid. Its filename is similar to the Ocarina of Time actor Demo_Sa, which is the cutscene actor for Saria. The filename translates to "Cutscene - Saria".

This actor is liable to crash the game. If it doesn't, it will load the Ocarina of Time Skull Kid, complete with a flute in his hand.

Obj_Shutter#

Actor

Object

0151

016D

This actor is linked to a used object called object_Obj_Toudai, which contains various Clock Town objects. It was originally used as a shutter that covered the bank window during closing hours. However, the bank never closes during normal gameplay.

The actor is loaded only in the ending cutscene setup of West Clock Town, where the Bomb Shop Owner is seen hugging his mother at the end of the game. Due to the camera angles of this cutscene, the bank is never viewable. However, even if one uses a Walk in Cutscenes code to explore the setup, it is necessary to load the actor 015A (En_Test4, the three-day timer) to the map to activate the flow of time, then wait until 8 PM.

This actor is linked to the unused object object_Bg_Keikoku_Spr. Its filename translates to "Valley - Fence". "Keikoku" (Valley) is the name used for Termina Field in the Map Select.

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to be a tall, spiked iron fence.

This needs some investigation.

Dm_Char04#

Actor

Object

0196

0001

This actor is an unused cutscene actor for Tatl and Tael. It contains a larger version of Tatl and a large blue version of Tael that can be seen in pre-release screenshots from August 1999. It also contains a large, peach-colored fairy. Its filename translates to "Cutscene - Character 04".

En_Egblock#

Actor

Object

019F

018D

This actor is linked to a used object called object_En_Egol, which contains Eyegore and its related objects. Its filename translates to "Eyegore Block".

When loaded in-game, it is revealed to be a grey rectangular stone block that has the same texture as the spots on the ground that Eyegore zaps with its eye beams. This was apparently supposed to be a destroyable pillar, similar to those that the Iron Knuckle can destroy in Ocarina of Time, but it doesn't appear in any of the rooms that have an Eyegore.

En_Tag_Obj#

This actor's use is unknown. Its filename indicates that it serves as a tag for something.

The actor is programmed to spawn an instance of the Seahorse actor (En_Ot) as soon as it is loaded, but because the Seahorse actor's parameters are not initialized, nothing appears at all. It is unclear what purpose this actor would have served.

Obj_Dowsing#

Actor

Object

01EC

0001

This actor would have enabled Rumble Pak functionality for searching for Stray Fairies in dungeons, as well as Skulltula Tokens in the two Spider Houses. However, it is never loaded in any of the relevant levels.

Majora's Mask supports the Rumble Pak for searching for hidden grotto holes in a very similar way to Ocarina of Time, just without the need for the Stone of Agony, however this functionality is never officially mentioned in-game or in the manual. Judging from the existence of this actor, it would seem that the Rumble Pak's functionality was supposed to have been extended greatly.

Dm_An#

00E2

This actor is an unused copy of the Anju actor, intended for the cutscene where Anju and Kafei are reunited, however the game uses the main Anju actor (En_An) for this purpose. It requires both the Anju (object_an4) and the Moon Mask (object_msmo) object to be loaded to spawn properly. Its name, which translates to "Cutscene - Anju", suggests that it is a cutscene actor for Anju.

To do:

Dm_Gm#

Actor

Object

02AD

00E2

This actor's use is unknown. Its name, which translates to "Cutscene - Gorman", suggests that it is a cutscene actor for Gorman. However, the actor's code is an exact duplicate of the Dm_An actor above, down to loading Anju's object rather than Gorman's. It appears that Gorman was supposed to be present during the cutscene where Anju and Kafei reunite.

Unreferenced Geometry#

Gorman Troupe Leader - Unknown Geometry#

Gorman, the Troupe Leader, has unreferenced geometry that resembles an object made out of fabric. It is not textured on the bottom, and its purpose is unknown. 0080

Variable 0080 is a version of the owl whose behavior calls to mind Kaepora Gaebora's famous query in Ocarina of Time:

"Would you like to hear what I said again?"

Originally, the owl would have initiated conversation (text ID 07D0), talked for a bit (07D1), then prompted the player to answer a yes or no question (07D2). If the player selected "Yes", he would have repeated his dialogue. If the player selected "No", he would have displayed a parting message (07D3) and flown off.

However, the messages once tied to this variable were overwritten with monkey dialogue, and the Yes/No option was deleted entirely. The video on the right shows the conversation taking place in-game, with the Yes/No option hacked back in.

Text ID

Message

Notes

07D0

You have strange powers, no?

Me been watching you!

Beginning of conversation.

07D1

Lately, this swamp, filled with
poison water.

Temple above waterfall strange...
Brother go to temple.

But brother no able to find temple
entrance. Temple for Deku only.

Brother captured by Deku. Now in
palace.

Continuation of conversation.

07D2

Help!

This message replaced the owl's Yes/No question.

07D3

Was my brother all right?

End of conversation.

The fact that these text IDs are unique to Majora's Mask suggests that this behaviour was intended for the owl's Terminan incarnation, and is not simply leftover code from Ocarina of Time. Additionally, the fact that the text IDs are positioned near other Southern Swamp-related messages suggests that there is where it would have been utilized.

While Blue Tektites appear in the game, Red Tektites do not. Tatl does not have a unique message for them, and defaults to her warning about Blue Tektites instead.

A mask bearing the features of Child Link can be found within Skull Kid's object. There are three copies, each rotated differently, for use in different scenarios. There are also three corresponding models of Majora's Mask, rotated in the same manner. This suggests that Skull Kid originally wore this mask.

An old version of the Kokiri Sword can be found within Child Link's object. It is identical to the model used in Ocarina of Time, but with messed-up graphics.

A cracked wall decal can be found in two cutscenes of Romani Ranch: the one where Romani is abducted by the aliens and on setup 02 (unused cutscene). It appeared in a pre-release image.

This is a variation of the soft soil spread across many places in the game. The player can throw bugs to it, and they will get into the hole just like any other wall soft soil. However, they won't throw any item.
