The Great Escape is based on the 1963 film of the same name, albeit with an expanded plot and different ending. There is a focus on stealth, which tracks, since it involves escaping a POW camp.
Unused FMVs#
The game features two unused FMVs found in GreatEscape\The Great Escape\Data\FMV.
The second one depicts an unused Hendley level. Notably, Hendley has his "character intro" cutscene before he is actually playable: this appears to be a leftover from when this earlier level existed, as every other character's intro cutscene is followed up by playing as them.
Notably the FMVs also skip a few times (going from 05 to 07, 08 to 10 and 14 to 16), indicating cut levels.
According to the "In-Game Dialogue" development file, Sedgwick's unused cutscene would have originally been played as the prologue of Level 4, an unused mission meant to be set between Sedgwick's character introduction and Mission 5 "Burn the Code Book" ("Level 5" in the development file) in the final game.
Hendley's unused cutscene would have been likely played as the introduction of Level 11, set between the final game's Mission 8 "Delousing Breakout" and Mission 9 "Reconnaisance" (Levels "10" and " 12" in the development file.)
Note that the Levels 6, 9 and 15 were also removed from the "In-Game Dialogue" document. The earlier "Cut Scene Summary" development file gives a few hints of what they were intended to be:
- The cut Level 6 (set between the released game's Mission 5 "Burn the Code Book" and Mission 6 "The Cooler King") would likely have been Hendley's prologue mission, set in an Hospital Ward and featuring a male SOE agent as an NPC (i. e. Level 3 in the "Cut Scene Summary" development file).
- Likewise, the cut Level 9 (set between the released game's Mission 7 "Infiltration" and Mission 8 "Delousing Breakout") would have likely been the first mission set in Stalag Luft III, probably either the "Cut Scene Summary" developer file's Levels 5 "Equipment Liberation" and/or 6, set in a sewer tunnel. Note that the "Cut Scene Summary" development file's Levels 8 "Moonshine" and 9 "Spy Hunting" were also meant to be set between the final game's Missions 8 and 9; it's unknown if either of those is the incomplete Level 11 seen in the unused cutscene.
- Finally, the cut Level 15 (set between the released game's Mission 11 "Last Train Home" and Mission 12 "Behind Enemy Lines") was probably meant to be the unused "Cut Scene Summary" developer file Level 15 "Break In", set in a priest's room (also featuring a priest NPC), and probably starring MacDonald.
Note that, according to both files, the third act's playable character order was intended to be "MacDonald → Sedgwick → Hendley → Hilts", while in the final game, Hendley's mission is inserted between MacDonald's second and third missions: the late change was probably made to make players use Hendley earlier, since all of his intended missions were removed as detailed above.
In the "Cut Scene Summary" developer file, which is based in an earlier build featuring free main character selection in every level set during and after Stalag Luft III, there was an extra level set between the prison escape and MacDonald's first stage (i. e. Missions 10 "The Great Escape" and 11 "Last Train Home" in the final game): it might have starred Hilts, as the mission involved "borrowing" a bike in a wooded glade; or it might've been an earlier verion of the final game's Mission 17 "Full Throttle" set earlier. Note that the "Cut Scene Summary" developer file only lists a single stage starring Sedgwick and Hilts, unlike in the final game.
