Unused Dialogue

This is a sub-page of The Cat in the Hat (PlayStation 2, Xbox, Windows).

There's a significant amount of unused voice clips that can be found in the files for the Windows version of this game. These range from references to various early concepts, including unused intros, scrapped levels, early enemies, and reworked mechanics, to alternate takes of used dialogue and a bizarre mic test.

(Source: CallaxianTitan)

Alternate Intro#

A series of voice clips reveal that the game would have originally started with the Fish explaining the game's plot and the Cat interjecting with some occasional comments.

Fish: So, we're having a quiet day at home, when this irresponsible lunatic of a cat shows up!

Icut_C02

Cat: Hey, I resent that! I am a very responsible lunatic.

Icut_F03

Fish: And with him, this cat brings a magic crate with a whole bizarre world inside!

Icut_C04

Cat: ♫He's got a whole world in his crate!♫

Icut_F05

Fish: Now the kids are fascinated by this world of chaos!

Icut_C06

Cat: Hey! Have you taken a look outside your own world recently?

Icut_F07

Fish: And then, the not-very-nice neighbor Mr. Quinn turns up...

Icut_C08

Cat: Yeah, I'll agree with ya there. He ain't nice!

Icut_F09

Fish: And he convinces Conrad to open the crate!

Icut_C10

Cat: Which wasn't really the smartest thing he coulda done.

Icut_F11

Fish: Now the world from the crate has taken over the house!

Icut_C12

Cat: Uh, yea. Oops.

Icut_F13

Fish: And Quinn's stolen the Crablock from the crate!

Icut_C14

Cat: And unfortunately, I had to leave for an urgent meeting in Australia.

Icut_F15

Fish: So, the cat decided he would heroically step forward, collect up all the magical energy loose around the house, stop Quinn, and save the day!

Icut_C16

Cat: Oh, well...If you put it like that. I suppose a cat's gotta do what a cat's gotta do.

Icut_F17

Fish: And I follow him around dispensing advice, because otherwise the incompetent idiot wouldn't stand a chance!

Icut_C18

Cat: Oh, come on, cut me some slack here, will ya!?

Icut_C19

Fish: Hey, you got us into this mess, now get us out!!!

The Cat#

Be prepared to hear an awful lot of Mike Myers, or more accurately, an awfully good impression of him.

Opening Cutscene#

Several outtakes of the opening intro, featuring the Cat explaining the game's plot, can be found in the Windows version.

Most of this audio, named Cat_G002, is used, but the first nine seconds are different from the final game.

A raw take, named Cat_G002_Entire_Read, with two alternate readings of the intro. Chris Edgerly, the Cat's voice actor, breaks character a little bit at the beginning.

The Cat saying "Ta da!", the file being named Cat_G001. It's possible that this was meant to play when the title screen appeared.

Level Entry#

There are alternate takes for the Cat's dialogue for entering two of the levels, specifically Musical Madness and Trouble Bath.

(B) I'll never understand this human obsession with baths. When you're a cat, there's nowhere you can't lick!

In addition to these, there are three other level introductions stored alongside the Cat's dialogue for entering the secret world, Mystical Mirror. This might imply that there were three other secret levels planned at one point. There's no other evidence for this as of yet, however.

Cat_Fun

It's fun to have fun, but you've got to know how!

The Cat reciting a line from one of the movie's songs, "Fun Fun Fun". It's not clear where this would've been used.

Cat_GI02

Hey, watch me dance now...haha!

This may have been an alternate sound test, as the dialogue that plays for changing the volume is stored right next to this.

Credits#

In the console versions of the game, the Cat talks over the credits, just in case you hadn't heard enough of him up to this point. Although he remains silent in the Windows version, both of his monologues show up in its files.

In the Xbox version's monologue, the Cat comments on many of the people mentioned in the credits, name-dropping specific people after about a minute. Only the very last line in this monologue isn't used, where he calls Andrea "button girl".

As a side note, many of the Cat's shoutouts appear to refer to some of the actual people behind the game:

  • Jonathan probably refers to Jonathan Eubanks, credited as the executive producer.
  • Nick probably refers to Nick Torchia, credited as the production coordinator and for "game concept".
  • Steve probably refers to Stephen Townsend, credited as the producer.
  • Nathan probably refers to Nathan Whitman, credited as the assistant producer.
  • Tom refers to Tom Keegan, credited as the casting and voice director.
  • Andrea refers to Andrea Toyias, credited as the dialogue editor and recording engineer.

It's not entirely clear who Dave is.

The Fish#

As the game's built-in instruction manual, the Fish also has a lot to say that goes unused.

Alternate Intro#

There appears to be another early concept for an intro sequence within the Fish's dialogue, where he explains the game's set-up even more succinctly than in the final game. Note how he blames the Things here for opening the magic crate rather than Conrad like in the other opening.

The more magic you collect, the more bizarre worlds you'll open. It's a very dirty job, and someone's gotta do it, and it's gonna be you!

Advice#

Much of the Fish's advice throughout the game was rerecorded or changed. These changes were usually just clarifications, but some reveal earlier versions of core game mechanics.

So, you wanna live forever, Cat? Collect slices of cake or even full cakes to increase your waistline, er, I mean, cat lives. Collect any small hearts, than you will gain extra lives. Now get a move on, Cat!

In what was presumably a mistake, this line originally suggested you had to collect a smaller cat in order to gain an extra life rather than a heart.

Fish_H13/Fish_H41

Now, a new introduction to your vocabulary: the switch. Those you find on the ground must be slammed, while others must be fired at with something you've caught in your umbrella.

Now, a new introduction to your vocabulary: the switch. Those you find on the ground must be slammed, while others must be hit by firing at them with something you've caught with your umbrella. Switches will often start platforms moving, or even make them appear out of thin air!

This line was rewritten to elaborate what the switches would do upon activation.

Fish_H18/Fish_H31

While gooballs are relatively stable, Goobangs are anything but! If you get too close to them, they'll explode! I know you might enjoy that, but if you get blown up, there'll be no one left to clean up the mess.

Coming up, there's a Goobang. These are like gooballs, except if you touch them, they'll explode. So jump over them, shoot them with captured creatures or gooballs, or set them off as part of some chain reaction. It's not that I care, I just need you to clean up this big mess you've made!

This line was rewritten to make the function(s) of the Goobangs more clear.

Fish_H19/Fish_H48

These are special switches. If you slam down on them, you'll become encased in a floating bubble. You can move around in it, but if you touch anything, it will burst. Use the shield button to move the bubble faster, and jump to pop it.

These are special switches. If you slam down on them, you'll become encased in a floating bubble. You can move around in it, but if you touch any spiky walls, floors, ceilings, or any creatures, it will burst. You can increase the speed of the balloon, or you can burst it if you decide you want to get out early.

This line was rewritten to make what bursts the bubble more clear.

Fish_H20/Fish_H51

If you see a hanging hoop, you can jump up, grab it, and be carried along to wherever it leads. Try it, but don't expect me to come running if it all goes wrong. I must have left my legs in the other fish bowl!

If you see a hanging hoop, you can jump up, grab it, and be carried along to wherever it leads. If you move in the direction the hoop is traveling, then you'll speed up, and if you move the other way, it'll slow down. Try it, but don't expect me to come running if it all goes wrong. I must have left my legs in the other fish bowl!

Some information was added telling the player how they can change the speed of the hoop.

Fish_H57_ALT/Fish_H57

Those giant crabs are really mean! Their claws can do some serious damage!

Those giant crabs are really mean! Their claws can really do some damage!

Two alternate takes on the same idea.

Fish_H107/Fish_H29

Your umbrella can also be used to form a shield which will protect you from all forms of damage. But, you can't move while you're using it.

You can form a shield from your umbrella to protect you from incoming fire. You can't move while you're under the shield, and it will not protect you from goo explosions or creatures running into you.

The original line states that the Cat's shield would've made the player invulnerable to damage, but this mechanic was eventually changed.

Fish_H108/Fish_H52

Over there is a Thing. He or she - I never can tell which - has stolen one of four keys. To get the key back, you'll have to bubble blast them with a captured enemy or a ball of goo. If the Thing is on a different platform than you, you may have to jump and fire.

Over there is a Thing. He or she - I never can tell which - has stolen one of four keys. To get the key back, you'll have to bubble blast them with a captured enemy or a ball of goo.

This line was shortened, as there's no point in the game where the Thing is on the same platform as the player.

Some of the Fish's dialogues even have two unused takes in the Windows version of the game.

(A) So, you're having more problems. Why am I not surprised? To jump extra high distances, you can use a trampoline. Some you simply walk up to. Others you must climb onto and then start jumping. You might even be able to squeeze in an extra bit of height if you jump at juuuust the right moment.
(B) So, you're having more problems. Why am I not surprised? A trampoline will allow you to jump extra high distances. However, if you need to stop jumping, slam down on the trampoline.

So, you're having more problems. Why am I not surprised? To jump higher, you can use a trampoline. Do try not to injure yourself.

The trampoline evidently went through a few changes. Originally, some trampolines had the player physically jump onto them rather than making them jump automatically. This was changed to having the trampolines stop only if the player slams down on them, before just having the player walk onto the trampolines.

(B) Another world has been opened because you've tidied up enough magic!

Fish_H11

To deal with the various bizarre monstrosities that you've unleashed into this house, you will need to use your umbrella. You can either jump and slam your umbrella down on creatures, or shoot bubbles at the little beasties to capture and fire them at another target.

A hint explaining how to attack using the Cat's umbrella, a function so basic it probably didn't warrant a separate dialogue.

Fish_H24

OK Cat, you're now in a bonus world. In here, you can collect some extra magic, and one of the crystals that will give you access to a secret world. But be careful, one false move and you're outta here!

A hint explaining what bonus worlds are. It was probably removed since it would serve as an unnecessary interruption, as every bonus room involves an obstacle the Cat must run away from.

Fish_H28

Oh no! With the magic he's collected, Quinn has made a new world! You're gonna have to go in after him.

This was probably meant to play while the Cat is traveling to each new world, but it was eventually cut in favor of Fish_H97 above as it was probably far too repetitive.

Fish_H30

Some creatures are covered with armor. A goat has horns, and a lizard has spikes to burst your bubble attack. Try to attack from a different direction, but if all else fails, an explosive gooball should rid you of them!

A hint for a totally unused concept. In the final game, all enemies are vulnerable to any of the Cat's bubble attacks. It also describes an entirely unused lizard enemy.

Fish_H54

Watch out for those giant purple dogs! As you know, there's nothing a dog likes more than chasing a cat!

A hint introducing the player to the purple poodle-looking creatures which ultimately goes unused.

Fish_H62

Those goats with two heads look like they don't know which way to go. But if they see you, they'll point their horns in your direction and charge!

A hint introducing the player to the two-headed goat creatures which ultimately goes unused.

Fish_H63

Those purple parrots are usually quite oblivious to the world. However, if you run into their beaks, they can give you a naaasty peck!

A hint introducing the player to the green-purple parrot enemies which ultimately goes unused.

Fish_H64

Up ahead there's something that looks like a ball with a beak. But if they touch you, it'll sting for a week!

Hints introducing the player to two totally unused enemies.

Fish_H68

Those huge birds up there carry eggs wherever they go. Only, they're not for hatching; they drop them on the heads of unsuspecting cats!

Fish_H73

These arrow signs are here to help show you which way to go.

A hint explaining the rather obvious purpose of the game's arrow signs.

Fish_H81

Ooh, see if you can find one of those red pieces of magic, because they're worth a lot!

These are pretty self-explanatory.

Fish_H116

Wooow! That's a red piece of magic! That's worth a hundred units. Keep your eye out for more of these!

Fish_H117

This is a piece of magic. Collect these to open more wooooorlds.

A hint explaining the game's units of currency. It's safe to say that this was cut for being unnecessary.

The Windows version of the game has a rather bizarre mic test of some sort where The Fish makes a bunch of weird noises, aptly named FishWildSounds. It includes an off-the-cuff comment on how "Crablock" sounds like "Kreplach", a sort of Jewish cuisine featuring a dumpling served in chicken soup.

Quinn#

Exiting a Level#

At the end of the first playthrough of each level, the player spots Quinn running through the exit door. There's a fair bit more dialogue for this purpose than the relatively short game would suggest.
