Oh dear, I do believe I have the vapors. |
Seima Densetsu 3x3 Eyes (聖魔伝説 サザンアイズ) is an RPG for the Sega Mega-CD based upon the 3×3 Eyes anime and manga, supervised by the original creator Yuzo Takada. It was only released in Japan.
Debug flag#
Change memory address $bfbb2 ($3fbb2 in some emulators) to 0xff00 to set the debug flag. The functionality to set the debug flag still exists in the game, but has been disabled in the production release.
Noclip mode#
When ingame, with the debug flag set, you can now press START to enable noclip/animation mode. This allows you to move around the player character anywhere on the map with no clipping/interaction. Press START again to return to normal mode.
Within noclip/animation mode, you can also press A to switch current sprite walking animations, B to switch sprite direction and C to change player sprite.
Additional ingame menu options#
With the debug flag set, you can also enter the ingame menu by pressing B then the "mode" (モード) and when moving the cursor downward, you will find there are several more options (without any graphics).
- 表 示 (message speed)
- アニメ (battle animation)
- Save/load game (debug)
- Game flag viewer/editor (debug)
- Warp (map-file, event-file, play-file and spawn point)
- Enable coordinates etc. overlay
- VRAM viewer
- Unknown
- Actor/character related
Flag editor#
Press A to set flags. Press B to skip forward 256 (0x100) flags, press C to go back 256 (0x100) flags. Press START to exit.
You can use the flag editor to set flag 10c0 to disable random encounters completely, or in an emulator set address $be3f8/$3e3f8 to 0x01. This seems to be a debug flag which is not set normally by the game.
Warp menu#
From top to bottom, this shows you the current MAP file, EV file (event sprites, data and text), PLAY file (hint system and sprites) and the spawn point on the map. The fifth value is not available, but may relate to monster data file in dungeons. You can manipulate the values freely, but may get strange results if e.g. the PLAY file does not match up with the expected EV file.
Coordinates overlay#
First line shows two sets of four numbers with some coordinates limited by a block. Next two sets of four numbers show absolute coordinates on map level.
Second line shows some unknown numbers.
Third line first two numbers are unknown. Last two numbers show the last flag ID set. The Flag ID is the same as in EV files and in the flag editor. For example if you talk to a character and this sets a flag, you will see this value change and reflect the specific flag ID, which you can find in the script.
Instant battle finish#
With the debug flag set, you can press B in any battle to finish it. This includes boss battles. You will not get any XP/items from the battle.
Additional Main Menu Options#
The main menu text box graphics are located at 0xffc4b0 and are Kosinski-compressed. They include the start and continue font graphics in Japanese, but also a few characters which are not normally used. Normally tilemap ID 0x29 is read according to offset 0x82d8 in ___000PRG.DAT. The tilemap is uncompressed and located at 0x2f4f4 in ___000PRG.DAT. If you change the tilemap to 0x2A by modifying the code/memory, the tilemap at 0x02f59c loads instead and you get an expanded main menu, including a music test (音楽モード) and a mysterious "???" option (the options are using the previously uncompressed but unused graphics). Unfortunately, this only loads the graphics, selection of the other options is not possible. It is unclear if and how you can enable this normally.
Full Nude Pai#
The following content is |
|---|
The ending has a "fanservice" (or artistic, depending on your tastes) nude image of Pai, typical of games of the time (see also the secret ending screen in Time Gal (Sega CD)). In the ending, the image is scrolled from top to bottom but fades out halfway so only the top half is seen. Dumping the image from Video RAM, you can see the full image.
