Unused Dialogue

This is a sub-page of Sam & Max Hit the Road.

Unused Dialogue#

These are voice clips that are supposed to be called by in-game scripts, except they never are because the conditions to do so just can't be met. There are some recordings using what appears to be leftover dialogue from the Computer Entertainment Show (CES) prototype, and basically any obsolete, even development-related SCUMM say-line events have their own vocal counterpart.

All offsets are relative to the file monster.sou. The subtitle of each piece of dialogue is taken from the game's files, with the notable exception of the Unused Dialogue With No Subtitles section.

Sam & Max's Office#

Dialogue that would have once been triggered by looking at the Antenna for a second time in a playthrough. This matches the subtitle used in the interactive demo.

Dinosaur Tarpit#

When looking at the line of children for the first time, Sam comments "This line's not moving very quickly."

This dialogue specfically overrides Max making the same joke if Max is trapped in the Dunk the Beast tank. There's no way to get to this room without freeing Max from the tank.

What do you think we should do with this flip book?

The response given by Max would be the same as the one used for the Paper Dolls: "I say we go down to the scummy side of town and give a bunch of hoods some paper cuts."

Unused Dialogue With No Subtitles#

Dialogue with no scripts or subtitles remaining in the game's files. It's pretty obvious what most of them are intended for, while others are a bit more mysterious.

Snuckey's Interior#

This dialogue isn't referenced in the game's scripts anymore, for obvious reasons. It appears at offsets 0x7290C9B, 0x72AF85C, and 0x72CE05D.

This unused line is stored right between lines Evelyn Morrison uses to respond to Sam saying "Nice outfit." Interestingly, the clip contains the line twice.

This dialogue is stored amongst the lines for talking to the bigfoot eating food to the right of the table. It seems to be an earlier version of the "Gotta go." line.

Door Dialogue#

This dialogue is similar to dialogue usually found in SCUMM games for interacting with doors that are already open or closed, but this game made the unique decision to have only one Use action instead of the option to Open or Close any object.
