Prototype (Windows)

Hidden Debug Menu#

Prototype1-debug-menu.png

A hidden leftover developer debug menu can be enabled by changing the following hex value inside prototypeenginef.dll in a suitable hex editor:

Before

After

52 41 44 5F 46 49 4E 41 4C 00 00

52 41 44 5F 52 45 4C 45 41 53 45

The debug menu can be activated from the main menu which allows the player to enter a variety of test levels.

In-game Behavior#

In-game Dev Menu

Activating the menu in-game by pressing the tilde key (~) while in the pause menu presents a different list of options.

Unused Powers#

Chameleonic#

The Chameleonic power would've presumably made Alex invisible to the military and infected forces. One image and a few strings related to this power can be found in the game files:

Spines#

Watch on YouTubeThe Spines are a scrapped defensive power with no icon, transformation animations, or sounds. They deal 10 reflect damage to attackers.

This function seems to be unfinished because it renders the attacker invincible when their health gets too low.

Unused Maps#

There are a bunch of test maps found in the files that can be loaded with the debug menu or through launch options. Add a new line with Level= followed by the map's name (eg. “Level=manhattanTest”).

  • manhattanTest: Starts the game with all upgrades unlocked, no missions, and no infected or military.
  • Millitary_Test: Every space that can hold a base is held by the military.
  • Infected_Test: Similar to Military_Test, except godmode is enabled and the enemies at the hive you spawn in front of won't target you.
  • empty_e3: Similar to manhattanTest, but with no AI, vehicles or other characters at all. Just you in an empty city.

The maps below were added in the September 29th, 2025, Steam update:

  • Note: All of these spawn you in a Manhattan similar to the one in manhattanTest except c18m01, c50m03, and manhattanTest_mini, which are unique. These maps aren't unique to this Steam update, they also exist on the PSN version of the game.
  • MissionPackage_Test: Seems to be identical to manhattanTest.
  • NIS_Test: NIS means Non-Interactive Scene which are the in-engine cutscenes. Loading this map plays 8 of them. Every scene played loads the version of Manhattan used by the mission.
    • Scene 1 (e01m01): Alex wakes up in a morgue.
    • Scenes 2, 3, 4 (e01m02): Alex passes out and consumes for the first time, Alex learns where Dana is, Alex saves Dana.
    • Scene 5 (e02m01): Alex enters his apartment and gets blown out of it.
    • Scene 6 (e02m02): Alex learns where Greene is.
    • Scene 7 (e04m04): Cross injects Alex with the syringe.
    • Scene 8 (e04m05): Alex confesses to Dana all of the things he's done. Loads a Manhattan with 4 zones: 2 infected zones near where Dana was held by Greene, 1 infected zone at the north edge of Manhattan, and 1 military zone where the fortress is.
  • These 10 prop test maps below feature various props, laid throughout Times Square. No NPCs spawn except in PropTest_10.
    • PropTest_1: Playground and construction props. All weapons with infinite ammo. Signs and rooftop props.
    • PropTest_2: Gibs. Pieces of bases and hives. Two large towers and inactive base turrets. A bunch of lights.
    • PropTest_3: Phone booths and other similar street machines. Trucks and containers. Pieces of bases. 2 large trees.
    • PropTest_4: Balconies and gibs of buildings. Fences, explosives, fridges, TVS and shopping carts. Furniture and trash.
    • PropTest_5: Containers, base pieces, gas tanks, bus stops, large rocks. Uninteractable pieces of trees.
    • PropTest_6: Various pipes and Bloodtox related props. The Bloodtox props aren't active and don't harm Alex when destroyed.
    • PropTest_7: Advertisement props, various tables and chairs. Construction props.
    • PropTest_8: Signs and cabinets. Low amount of props compared to the other maps.
    • PropTest_9: Fences and barrels. Tow tractors.
    • PropTest_10: Seems to be identical to manhattanTest.
  • Specialist: Internal name of Captain Cross. Spawns you below the map and seems to be identical to manhattanTest otherwise.
  • Test_Matt: A version of manhattanTest containing a military zone filled with vehicles on Financial District. Matt could refer to game designer Matt Armstrong or the programmers Matt Hughson and Matthew Miller.
  • Test_Props1: Crashes on load.
  • Test_Props2: Crashes on load.
  • Test_Props3: Crashes on load.
  • autotester: Seems to be identical to manhattanTest.
  • brian_test: Seems to be identical to manhattanTest. brian could refer to technical game designer Brian Smedley or game designer Brian Vidovic.
  • c18m01: A small map filled with buildings of various shapes and basic textures. There are no objects or NPCs. There are buildings with material labels over them that make the respective sound when hitting them, if there is an associated sound to play. Alex can fall out of this map into the void.
  • c50m03: A tiny gray map that contains one tower with low walls around it. Alex cannot Airdash or Glide in this map. There is no ambient sound, no objects, no NPCs. Alex can fall out of this map into the void.
  • manhattanTest_mini: Manhattan with only Times Square. The rest of the map still "exists", with pedestrians and vehicles constantly spawning and falling through the map. Alex's out of bounds protection is still active, letting him traverse through the rest of Manhattan.

  • test_cwinder: Spawns you near Times Square next to an infected zone and 3 blue mission markers on a rooftop, each larger in size. There's a yellow mission marker on the opposite building. They don't seem to do anything or respond when touched. There are no NPCs in this map. cwinder refers to programmer Chris Winder.
  • test_dennis: Crashes on load. dennis refers to writer and game designer Dennis Detwiller.
  • test_oa: Crashes on load.

Revisional Differences#

To do:
Note all changes from this version.

  • The Steam version got an update in 29 September 2025.
    • New credits were added for downloadable content, a Ubisoft Connect version, Emerging Franchises, Beenox, Demonware, and Iron Galaxy Studios. Iron Galaxy Studios is notable for working on Windows ports of various video game remasters like Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
    • A bunch of test maps were added (noted above).
    • The game is now properly labeled in the taskbar as [PROTOTYPE®] instead of prototype.
