Debug Flags#

SNES RAM address 7E00E8 contains several debug flags with some interesting properties. Some can be enabled through passwords. Entering passwords 670628 + 680628 or the Pro Action Replay (PAR) codes 7E00E8FF + 7E00E981 will enable all of them at once.

Bit

Effect

8000

Causes an anti-piracy message to appear in place of the normal ending. It would have made sense for this to appear if the game detected it was running on a copier or a SNES from the wrong region, but setting this bit is the only apparent way to see the message.

If the flag is disabled while the message is already being displayed, it will switch to the actual ending text instead.

0100

Enables a Mode 7 background test. The background for the title screen and credits is replaced with several horizontal and vertical gradient bars. Controllers 1 and 2 can also be used to change the background animation parameters:

  • D-Pad changes the horizontal/vertical offset.
  • A/B/X/Y change the transformation settings.
  • L/R change the rotation speed/direction.
  • L/R on controller 2 cycle the background colors.

0040

273859

Causes the spiky ball morph to last for as long as the Y button is held, instead of only lasting for a few seconds as usual.

0020

563986

Gives the player infinite bombs.

0010

969836

Gives the player infinite health.

0008

097602

Gives the player infinite lives.

0004

671219

0001

mohawk-mapedit.png

Enables an in-game level editing feature. During gameplay, press A+Y to enable the editor, which allows you to move freely around the level and place sprites. The controls are:

  • A: Increase selected sprite number.
  • Y: Decrease selected sprite number.
  • L/R: Cycle through available variations of the selected sprite.
  • B: Select whichever sprite was last touched by the cursor.
  • X: Place the selected sprite at the cursor position.
  • A+Y: Return to gameplay.

If X is held when starting the game, any sprites placed by the player will still be intact when restarting the level; otherwise, they will disappear after losing a life.

There are also passwords that enable multiple of the above effects at once:
