Martialbeat 2

Martialbeat 2 is the second and last installment of the martial arts-based exertainment game series. Unlike the original version, Martialbeat 2 shipped with two discs, Budou Disc (Martial Arts Disc) and Fitness Disc, each having several exclusive songs.

Unused Text#

The following string can be found at offset 0x455C of both discs' executables:

You've got a
NEW TRACK!

As Martialbeat 2 doesn't have any unlockable songs, this goes unused. In addition, a function that references this string is loaded at 0x80108C10 in memory, though it never gets called.

Unused Charts#

The game's chart data can be found inside the folder DATA\BEAT in both discs. While there's only 14 different charts, there are also 11 more files consisting of earlier variations. Aside from them using the chart format used by the original PlayStation release of Martialbeat, rather than the new format introduced in this game, unless stated otherwise, the differences between the earlier and final versions are largely unknown. They are as follows:

  • KUN.BD - earlier version of KUN3.BD, associated with the song Let's Go Now
  • SMAP.BD - earlier version of SMAP3.BD, associated with the song Yozora no mukou (Budou Disc version)
  • TOWAI.BD - earlier version of TOWAI3.BD, associated with the song Twilight Zone
  • IT.BD - earlier version of IT3.BD, associated with the song It's Raining Men
  • IDO.BD - earlier version of IDO3.BD, associated with the song Hyper Glide (Budou Disc version)
  • LET.BD - earlier version of LET3.BD, associated with the song Let's Groove
  • BEAT.BD - earlier version of BEAT3.BD, associated with the song Beat of Life
  • NEVER.BD - earlier version of NEVER3.BD, associated with the song Never Ending Story
  • IDO2_2.BD - earlier version of IDO2.BD, associated with the song Hyper Glide (Fitness Disc version). Uses the new chart format
  • FOR.BD - associated with the song Forever. This file, which uses the new chart format, appears to have no note parameters at all.
  • FOREVER_.BD - earlier version of FOREVER.BD, also associated with the song Forever. Uses the new chart format

Oddity#

As noted in the Unused Charts section, the song Hyper Glide uses the ID IDO, which is seen in its associated files. The executables, in addition to this ID, also assign an internal name for the song, though it refers to a completely different song instead:

  • 0x5414 -
    \STR\B_IDO.STR;1 I Do I Do I Do セルフガード
  • 0x5548 -
    \STR\P_IDO2.STR;1 I Do I Do I Do 2

This string likely refers to the song I Do, I Do, I Do by Creamy, as both songs share the same BPM, in addition to there being a different song by the same artist in the game (Never Ending Story).
