Produced just before Sailor Moon popularized the Super Sentai–influenced team format for magical girls, Mahou no Shoujo Silky Lip is a noble attempt at making an adventure game inspired by the "witch girl" shows that were dominant in the '70s and '80s...which is to say, it's pretty much a blatant ripoff of the 1975 anime Majokko Megu-chan. Our plucky protagonist Lip (what makes her silky is really not clear) must face many trials in the Human Realm in order to beat her rival Isabella and earn the right to become queen of the Magic Realm!
Though it has many interesting ideas, including a distinctive dialogue system sometimes characterized as a predecessor to Sakura Taisen's, it had the misfortune of being developed by a particularly inexperienced team at a company already notorious for shoveling out rushed, half-baked games. The result is a well-intentioned mess whose biggest selling point is probably its theme song. Though in all fairness, it is a pretty good theme song...
Developer Room#
Map 21 is an unused developer room featuring caricatures of various staff members. It can be accessed by changing the value at 0x5C2152 in an ISO of Track 01 from 0x30 to 0x32, then starting a new game.
This area uses unique graphics, and has a second room accessed through an invisible warp on the right side of the first room.

This name doesn't appear in the credits, but presumably refers to Mitsuaki Komuta, a programmer on Cosmic Fantasy Stories. |
|
Takahashi: "..." |
Also doesn't appear in the credits, but is probably Ikuko Takahashi, an artist on Cosmic Fantasy Stories. |
Many of the developer NPCs have dialogue referring to unused cutscenes, and they even attempt to play them. These correspond to the cutscene files V009 through V015, which unfortunately were removed from the disc prior to the game's release. As a result, talking to these NPCs simply freezes the game on a black screen.
No map actually contains the necessary script data to load this one. The exit leads to the upper-left corner of the city, right next to the NPC who begs for booze, suggesting it was intended to be entered from there. Unused dialogue for that map mentions Lip falling in a hole; combined with Shoujirou Endou's comments about the foundations collapsing, it's a reasonable guess that walking behind the small hidden alcove in that corner of the map would have caused Lip to "fall" into the developer room.
Graphics#
Conversation Mode#
Graphic |
Notes |
|---|---|
The Conversation Mode HUD contains graphics for unused versions of the "angry" and "sad" emotion icons with inverted colors. These may have been intended to be displayed when an emotion is empty and its corresponding option therefore can't be selected, as there is no icon for the "happy" emotion, which can't decrease and thus wouldn't need one for this scenario. |
Credits#
Though the images shown in the credits at the end of the game are sepia-toned, some of them also load a unique second palette line that seems to be appropriate for colorizing their content. This is most likely because these graphics were repurposed from scrapped cutscenes that were originally in full color (the shot of the Magic Realm's king can be seen in color in magazine previews, for instance).
Cutscene Leftovers#
Portions of the game's cutscenes files which aren't used for anything, or are used only as temporary storage buffers, are filled with "junk" data, which chiefly seems to consist of uncompressed graphics. They may have come from another game entirely (perhaps Cosmic Fantasy Stories, another Telenet title that came out a few months earlier and shared some staff with this one).
All of these appear several times across multiple files.
Graphic |
Notes |
|---|---|
Might be some kind of background with mountains and sky, along with what seem to be many repeated filler tiles and a set of icons at the end. |
|
Sprite graphics for something? |
|
A font and some arrow icons. |
Scene Skip#
If the word at RAM $FFF846 contains a nonzero value, the game will skip all Conversation Mode events, overworld-triggered cutscenes, and battles. The game never writes to this address – indeed, does not even initialize it! It inherits the value left there by the BIOS boot sequence, which happens to be 0x0000 for a Japanese BIOS (and would not be so on a US BIOS, which would have been an issue had this game been released anywhere else).

|
Lip: "Isabella, don't say such nasty things..." |
This message is duplicated in every single Conversation Mode file alongside the strings that are printed in the right-side window (the Angry/Sad/Happy and Yes/No prompts). It's also found in the CLAS and ROOM files that contain intermission scenes for the classroom and Lip's room. No instance of this message is used, and it's unclear why so many copies of it are present. |
CLAS#

It's now March. Perhaps because her parting from everyone is near, Lip can't concentrate on class. |
This clearly would have served as an introduction for Episode 10, but it's not used. |

The next day...The Gang of Three are weighing terribly on Lip's mind. |
This would similarly have been used for an intermission in Episode 10. |

Just doing as I'm told, every day...This place is like a prison. |
Presumably would have been used in Episode 1 when Lip is supposed to be going to class, or perhaps immediately after trying to skip it. |
|
I wonder what my room is like... |
Prompting the player to go check Lip's room at the end of Episode 2. |
|
To return to the Land of Magic, I need to go to the abandoned house... |
For Episode 11. Lip simply keeps talking about Chako at this point. |
Battles#

Narae: "N-no...My daughter, see...I, uh...Her birthday...I wanted to get her a present, but it was before payday...But uh...When I thought about it hard...In the end, you know..." |
Perhaps the most interesting unused line. It appears that Narae was supposed to have a real motive for stealing Lip's pendant in Episode 4. For whatever reason, this was cut, making the whole thing seem very baffling (beyond a vague assertion from Ketcha that he "looked like he had money problems"). |

Isabella: "A shrine visit? Don't mess with me! Why should I go so far to indulge you? Idiot!" |
Obviously a response to Lip's suggestion that they visit the shrine together for New Year's, but a different line is used in that situation. |
Conversation 59: Ketcha discusses Lip's return to the Magic Realm#
This entire conversation, clearly intended for the start of Episode 10, is unused in-game, though it's accessible through the conversation test mode (hold A+B+C as the game boots).

|
Headmaster: "Get back to your room, now!" |
If Lip tries to skip class, then after talking to the headmaster, she's instructed to go to her room. This unused variation of the line is more forceful, and was perhaps intended to be used if Lip chose options in the dialogue that provoked an angry response from the headmaster. In the finished game, choices made in Conversation Mode never have any effect on the events that follow (save for the very end of the game). |
|
"Lip's assessment points have changed by -10." |
A peculiar message that would have indicated a point deduction directly on the overworld, something that never happens in the finished game. It's also wrapped in quotes, which is not the case for the used messages. |
|
"The door is shut, and you can't enter." |
These next several messages are all similar to used (or in some cases unused) flavor text for examining various objects, but are all wrapped in quotes, unlike the finalized versions. May have simply been used for testing the "look" interaction before the final game's writing conventions were established. |
|
"Portraits of the successive headmasters hang here." |
|
|
"It's a magic desk for taking lessons." |
|
|
Lip: "Professor Nastock." |
Lip greeting (probably) Nastock. In the finished game, their only interaction is Nastock telling her to take her seat. |
|
Lip: "Y-yes..." |
No context; could have been used anywhere. |
|
Lip: "M-my head's kind of buzzing..." |
Similar to what Lip says after Lavar warps her to the headmaster's office. |
|
Lip has returned to her room. |
Seems like narration that would have been shown if Lip was automatically returned to her room after talking to the headmaster. Instead, the player has to walk back manually. |
|
This is a desk for studying magic, called a sorcery desk. |
Obviously intended to be used if a desk was examined, but that's impossible to do. |
Map 02 – City, Area A#
This covers the four upper-left squares of the city map, notably including the top-left area where the developer room spits Lip out. Presumably, like Map 01, it was created early on and used for testing.

"I'm gonna rip ya a new one, punk." [09]; evt_mes16[09]"Hey, what're you doin' here?" |
This set of messages contains multiple lines of dialogue that are themselves used, interspersed with what seem to be developer comments. The comments are set off from the text with the byte 0x09, notated as "[09]" here, which in the final game has no special effect. |
|
"Beat it, chump!"[09]; evt_mes18[09]"I wonder what it means to be truly free..." |
|

Lip: "Eeek!" |

|
Chako: "You're late!" |
Chako scolding the player for being late. In this scene, the game requires the player to talk to the other characters in a specific order to get them to join the party, and talking to them in any other order causes them to give a "you're late" message instead. Chako is the first one to join, so her "late" message is never used. |
|
Saru: "You're late, yup." |
Talking to Saru always immediately triggers the event where he gets scared and leaves, so he never has a chance to say this. |
|
Chako: "Huh?" |
The next few lines are for an unused variant of this scene that was meant to occur if the player had previously turned down Chako's request to explore the mansion. In this case, the characters would be surprised to see Lip show up. In the final, this detail was omitted, and they simply act as though she was expected to come regardless. |
|
Hagetank: "O-oh?" |

Saru: "What is it, yup?" |

|
Lip: "Lilalulu, lalilulu, lilalululu! Magic: Spatial Transfer!" |
An alternate version of Lip casting magic on Chako at the end of the mansion event; in the final game, she uses both Memory Manipulation and Spatial Transfer, but here, it's only the latter. From this and the dialogue immediately preceding the event, it's pretty clear that the player was intended to have the option to choose whether or not to wipe Chako's memory, but this alternate path was dropped for whatever reason. |

Kaionji: "If anything, it'd be nice if the school exploded..." |
This line is clearly meant for the scene where the explosion occurs during class, but Kaionji isn't present in that scene. It's possible somebody noticed that the number of NPCs on that screen was causing sprite dropout when the menu was opened, and he was removed to reduce the issue. |
