Magical Puzzle Popils (NES)

This game was never completed and/or given a public release.
As a result of this, keep in mind that the developers might have used or deleted some of the content featured here, had the game actually been released.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

Magical Puzzle Popils is a puzzle platformer from Fukio Mitsuji, best known for Bubble Bobble. The game was originally planned for release on the Famicom, before being scrapped and ported onto Game Gear instead. While footage of the game was shared online by programmer Jun Amanai in 2016, the game itself wouldn't find its way online until December 2025, thanks to the efforts of the Video Game History Foundation. Unfortunately the set of EEPROMs housing the game was incomplete and missing one of four PRG chips, but miraculously, the game is playable despite this, albeit lacking any sound.

Test Mode#

On the "Tengen Presents" screen, after all the text has faded in, quickly input the following to access a Test Mode and Sound Test: Right, Up x8, Left x4 and Down x4.

Though as previously mentioned, due to missing data there is no sound to test. Luckily, one of the videos shared by Jun Amanai shows the test sequence in action including music and sound effects.

Hidden Credit#

Like the eventual Game Gear port, hidden credit for Amanai can be found at 0x1CF59 in the patched ROM.
