Kurutta Kajitsu is a thriller that doesn't quite resolve in the way you'd expect, becoming in the process a prototypical Utsuge that foreshadowed a trend of visual novels with bleak outlooks in the years to come.
A second, intriguing legacy this game can lay claim to is shaping the look of Japanese RTA and commentary videos; influential video creator biim cites this game as inspiring a screen layout that would go on to be copied many times.

Don-chan and the Garden Party#
Early on in the game Tetsu learns from his classmate Yasuko that it has been cancelled for a garden party he is invited to, then heads to the school cafeteria and runs into his friend "Don-chan". An unused dialog branch reveals that Tetsu could have heard about the garden party from Don-chan instead:

[Don-chan] "I don't have an artistic bone in my body. |
[哲]「‥‥‥‥それが目的か。」 |
[Tetsu] "...So that's why you want to go." |
The explanation for this omission could lie in a curious choice Tetsu can make at the school gates early on in the game: He can either head to the lecture hall where he meets Yasuko (AC1_1B.MES) or head to the cafeteria (AC1_1X.MES); a pointless diversion as he finds it is still being set up for the day, leading him to continue to the lecture hall regardless. It is possible that going to the cafeteria would have led directly to Don-chan (AC1_2A.MES) at one point, but was changed because the developers felt it important for the player to meet Yasuko, who continues to appear throughout the rest of the game.

A flag is set at the end of this unused path which slightly modifies a later chunk of dialogue; this also goes unused.

Tutor to Misuzu#
In AC4_1D.MES, Nariko quizzes Tetsu about the sequence of events up to that point. One of the questions concerns which Tsukishima sister he was asked to tutor for; answering incorrectly repeatedly triggers new lines from Nariko, but in the PC-98 version, a second line meant for repeatedly answering with "Misuzu" goes unseen:

[成子]「美鈴さんの家庭教師って、どういうこと? 彼女 |
[Nariko] "What do you mean, Misuzu's tutor? She |
This is due to the flag that was meant to clear the first line from the queue being set incorrectly. This was fixed in the X68000 version, and by extension the Windows port.
Version Differences#
Emphasis Text#
The PC-98 version of Kurutta Kajitsu contains a handful of onomatopoeia that are bolded to make them stand out from the rest of the text:
As all text in the X68000 version is bolded, this nuance was excised entirely. This required some modifications to the script to remove the code which handled the text bolding.
Text Differences#
Although the text in the X68000 version is largely identical to the PC-98's, there was evidently enough time between versions for some minor revisions to correct typos and rephrase lines.

The PC-98 version uses a kanji character (描, “draw”) that looks similar to the one that was intended to be used (猫, “cat”), but one that is incorrect nonetheless.
