Eggsucker

Eggsucker is a Puzzle Bobble clone for the PC, though it's probably most notable for being acquired by PopCap Games and subsequently reworked into Dynomite.

Revisional Differences#

Not much info about the game is readily available. Fortunately, the developer left official update notes on their website.

  • 1.04 The oldest known version of the game - June 2, 2001
  • 2.0 The only major patch of the game - September 26, 2001
  • 2.0 Patch Bug fixes with gamemode "Clear'em" and posting highscores on egg.net - October 2, 2001
  • 2.0 Patch 2 This update corrects a timer bug that was causing unusual behavior on some machines - October 8, 2001
  • 2.0 Patch 3 Multiple bug fixes and high score changes - October 24, 2001
  • Purchased by PopCap (sales discontinued) - January 7, 2002

Even though PopCap eventually purchased the game, the original developers were very supportive and still promoted PopCap's version, and eventually replaced the download links with ones for Dynomite while still naming it "Eggsucker.exe". However, it seems clear the company itself is no longer involved with the game, and mentions they "remain committed to producing high-quality, low cost video games for your enjoyment."

Title Screen#

v1.04

v2.0

The title screen got a big visual overhaul, and a button to grab the latest news was added.

v1.04 (Old Installer, Raptisoft, June 2, 2001)#

  • The earliest known version of the game. It is currently unknown if v1.00 through v1.03 existed, but even Raptisoft only mentions 1.04.
  • Has graphical options for Screen Jittering and Graphic Acceletation.
  • Has a very detailed in-game tutorial, very similar to what would later be in Dynomite.

v2.0 Patch 3 (Installer, Raptisoft, October 24, 2001)#

  • The last known version of the game (October 24 Patch)
  • Title screen/Settings overhaul
  • Better performance on older PCs (and newer ones...)
  • Implemented Windowed Mode
  • Save game feature for fossil games
  • Added Boss Mode
  • Added Lan and internet multiplayer
  • Added Internet high scores
  • Added a button to get notified of news
  • Removed graphical options Screen Jittering and Graphic Acceletation
  • Unlike version 1.04, which had an extremely detailed in-game tutorial, it's now a small .exe named help.exe which opens a window with navigation buttons.

Raptisoft also teased for December 2001 an Eggsucker expansion pack, featuring new puzzles and new challenges. This never came to be, since in January 2002 the game was purchased by PopCap, with the developer, to create Dynomite.

Eggsucker has been purchased by Popcap games, and will no longer be available for sale from this web site.

Popcap games (www.popcap.com) will be selling a new, enhanced version of Eggsucker (called Dynomite) some time in late January. The new version will have several graphical enhancements, a new interface, a level editor, and a complete re-working of all the games to make them more fun. The new version contains some of the enhancements that were intended for the Eggsucker expansion pack.

We want to thank all the Eggsucker customers who made this possible! We could not have done this without you and your kind comments. Raptisoft will remain committed to producing high-quality, low cost video games for your enjoyment.

In-Game Tutorial#

v1.04 had a complete in-game tutorial on how to play, but this was removed in v2.0 in favor of an external program. The in-game tutorial is very similar to Dynomite.

In Eggsucker, you can progress through the tutorial by pressing the fire button. It also progresses automatically (done in the video). In Dynomite, you have to press the "Continue" button, which can be tedious as it is constantly located in different positions.
