Debug Menu#

Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: How to activate this.

CarnEvil_Debug_Menu.png

CarnEvil features a pretty extensive debug menu, that displays hit detection/colliders, in game commands, and even a radar system. The different parts of the menu can be controlled via bitwise logic, and turned on and off.

Unused Graphics#

Several unused screens are present within the game. These include screens from a promotional sneak preview of the game, developer group photos, an unused AAMA rating, enemy name plates, stage select placeholders, unused "Game Over" screen, and even a malicious picture featuring Jeffrey Dahmer and Neil Nicastro.

Stage Select Placeholders#

There are quite a few variations of stage select graphics for every stage in the game, throughout different points in development. Some of these preliminary graphics reflect early names for levels, such as: "Freakshow Chamber of Horrors", "The Haunted House" and "Mr Rickety". All stage select placeholders were downsized and converted to be in the shape of carnival tickets in the final release of the game. This was most likely done to allow preview animations (usually of what was present in these early graphics) to play atop each stage placeholder.

Freak Show#

Apparently, the full name for the level is "Freakshow Chamber of Horrors," based on the earliest graphic found. Later variations of the graphic would shorten this to "The Freak Show", and finally just "Freak Show," most likely due to limited canvas space to work with as the game's stage select layout evolved.

Haunted House#

Variations of this graphic seem to alternate between calling this level "The Haunted House" and "Haunted House". Again, the level's name was most likely shortened due to limited canvas space to work with as the game's stage select layout evolved.

Rickety Town#

Apparently, the original name for the level was "Mr. Rickety, " based on the earliest graphic found, which oddly enough uses an image of anime character Sailor Jupiter as its background. The stage was eventually renamed to "Rickety Town" at some point later in development, most likely to make it sound more like a place than a person.

The Big Top#

The "under construction" graphic was most likely used during the sneak preview, and was probably not selectable. The final game contains no stage select graphic for "The Big Top" level, as the player is automatically taken there after completing the previous three levels. It is assumed that at this point in development, the level had not been fully completed.

Game Over#

An alternate version of the "Game Over" screen exists featuring Umlaut, the jester, instead of Professor Ludwig von Tökkentäkker. It is unknown why the change was made, but it was most likely due to Professor Ludwig von Tökkentäkker being the final boss of the game.

Oddities#

A strange image was found of Jeffrey Dahmer holding a bloody bag with Neil Nicastro's head in it. The image appears several times in various sizes, and was most likely used for padding. Seems Neil Nicastro (executive producer of the game, and CEO of Midway Games until 2004) was on someone's naughty list...

Unused Music#

To do:
Get direct rips of these, rather than links to YouTube videos.

Within the files of the game is a music track named Tunnel0.BNK; it is unknown what the area for this music would have looked like, but many people speculate that it was for a Tunnel of Love level, which would fit in with the twisted humor of the game.

There are other unused tracks such as OPEN.BNK which seems to add more to the Attract movie that plays on Arcade machines when the game is not being played, and it features alternate music along with sounds of a dog barking. There is no video footage for this extra part as far as anyone is aware.

Unused NPC Lines#

To do:

There exist many unused lines of dialogue in the game, for not only some of the enemies, but also for the final boss Tokentakker as well (however some of his lines only appear when you have gore enabled).

Umlaut also has an unused alternate rhyme for when the player first goes to Rickety Town (it was changed entirely to flow better for the final version of the game).
