Asterisk no Daibouken is a side-scrolling action game that was developed on the Nintendo Game Processor, a development kit focused on creating games for the Super Famicom.
The game was dumped in 2005 from a Game Processor RAM Cassette and is currently one of two surviving games to be developed from the Game Processor. More information can be learned here
Unused Graphics#
Asterisk#
There are many graphics leftover in the ROM, though none of their palettes are known, so the most suitable/likely option will be used.
Graphic |
Description |
|---|---|
An unused death(?) frame for the titular Asterisk. The game fades to the game over screen after playing the hurt animation upon receiving a fatal hit, and Asterisk just uses her regular standing sprite during the fade-out, leaving this unused. |
An unused frame of Asterisk being knocked back or casting something. |
Asterisk possesses two (technically three, counting the aforementioned spell animation) unused pairs of legs stored with her sword-slashing sprites, which always reuse the bottom 16 pixels of whatever animation she's currently displaying, allowing the player to slash while moving. They also look quite unnatural, which might have contributed to their removal. |
Unused frames for Asterisk's fireball spell. |
An unused trail of flames, presumably for the same spell. |
Enemies#
Graphic |
Description |
|---|---|
An unused frame of animation exists for the little blue enemy, but much like the other enemies (aside from the final boss) it is completely static and doesn't animate. |
Graphics for an unused witch enemy, and it using its staff, which it would presumably use it to launch some kind of magic attack. (perhaps Asterisk's fireball spell?) Palette is unknown, but these two seem to fit the best. |
Similarly, these graphics for a spider and the web it would presumably hang off of are unused. All enemies besides the final boss only move to the left, so this would have been a nice change of pace. The background has been made pink for better visibility on the dangling web. |
While not technically unused, the small skull enemy has some detail pixels that are never seen due to the palette used. Here are both the original sprite and the differently-colored pixels highlighted in magenta for comparison. |
Other#
Graphic |
Description |
|---|---|
Stored among the graphics for the HUD and the health potions is this golden staff. It might have been meant to refill your magic. Only the orb refills magic in the game. |
Unused japanese text for "Asterisk". It is present twice in the ROM, but unused both times, as the title screen and credits use different graphics. Perhaps an early version of either? |
Unused frames. Purpose unknown, but they might have been related to the early HP and MP meters. |
An early version of the HP and MP meters, before they were replaced with individual icons. Palette unknown. |
Various unused ground tiles for the main background of the forest. They are used on its second background layer, but are hidden by the first background layer being overlaid on top of it. |
This large 4bpp-formatted graphic is stored among other background graphics. Purpose unknown, no palette seems to fit it, either. |
A small part of the large blood splatter is unused as the left-most 8 pixels of the graphic are cut off, leaving the whole graphic unseen. (The other tile is used elsewhere as a single-pixel speck of blood.) |
Unused bits of the letters used for the game over screen. Their graphics seem to have been very sloppily put together, with some overlapping each other's tiles. (Which can be seen with the V in the game - The little dark yellow rectangle is the unused bottom of the G) |
An unused layer of grass meant for the title screen, intended to overlay with the trees in the background. |
Here is a mockup of how the title screen would have looked like, had the grass blades been implemented:
Additionally, the main spritesheet is duplicated in the game's ROM. (Asterisk and the unused witch's sprites are additionally duplicated another time) No differences seem to be present between the used and unused versions.
