This is a sub-page of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy.
Aside from the improved graphics, a lot was changed between the original games and Apollo Justice Trilogy.
Multiple Games#
In the Trilogy versions of all of the games, many lines with numbers in them were changed so the number was spelled out (e.g. "300" in the original would become "three hundred" in Trilogy). Due to how often this occurs, lines that change to spell out the numbers will only be listed if there were other changes made to it.

Reason for Change |

Apollo: What a huge mansion... Feels like Chinatown. |
Apollo: What a huge mansion... |
"Feels like Chinatown" was removed in Trilogy, presumably because it felt out-of-place here. |
Apollo: There was a car accident here last night? |
Apollo: So, there was supposedly a car accident here last night. |
The person Apollo's talking to never even implies that there was a car accident the night before, so the original reply doesn't make much sense. |
Stickler: Yes... it was a severe blow to the progress of science, but one that had to be born. |
Stickler: Yes... it was a severe blow to the progress of science, but one that had to be borne. |
Typo fix ("born" to "borne"). |
Apollo: I felt my bracelet vibrate just now... |
Apollo: I felt my bracelet tighten just now... |
Apollo's bracelet can't vibrate, it only tightens. |

Reason for Change |
|---|---|---|
Apollo: (But when we got to the top, I felt every one of those 20 feet down.) |
Apollo: (But when we got to the top, I felt every one of those fifteen feet down.) |
The height is supposed to be fifteen feet, not twenty. |
Judge: Let the witness please take the stand! |
Judge: Please show the witness to the stand! |
Possibly tweaked to have the judge be more authoritative (pleading vs. commanding). |
Apollo: Troupe Grammarie... huh? |
Apollo: Troupe "Gram-uh-ree"... huh? |
The original line could easily be mistaken for a typo; the new one makes it more clear that Apollo is mispronouncing "Gramarye" because he hasn't heard of them. |
Valant: ...I could fain contain my emotions! I wept oceans! |
Valant: ...I could fain not contain my emotions! I wept oceans! |
"Fain" in this context means something along the lines of "gladly" or "willingly", which doesn't make sense in the original line. |
Apollo: You have to be more goal oriented. If he's not guilty, we win. |
Apollo: You have to be more goal-oriented. If he's innocent, we win. |
The terms "innocent" and "not guilty" were swapped so Trucy's line would be accurate. |
Trucy: No, if he's innocent, we win. |
Trucy: No, if he's found "not guilty", we win. |
|
Valant: I am inspecting my equipment of illusion to make sure naught is amiss, Miss. |
Valant: I am inspecting my equipment of illusion to make sure naught is amiss. |
Possibly felt odd for someone to use "Miss" when referring to Trucy. |
Trucy: And he went up into the sky with a guitar... Well, thirty feet up, at least. |
Trucy: And he went up into the sky with a guitar... Well, fifteen feet up, at least. |
Like before, the height is supposed to be fifteen feet. |
Trucy: Why? We'd just be waiting. Quietly. So he didn't notice. |
Trucy: Why? We'd just be waiting. Quietly. So he won't notice. |
Past tense doesn't make sense here, since "he" (i.e. Klavier) hadn't noticed them yet. |
Klavier: Something Interpol doesn't want to tell Borginia... |
Klavier: There's something either Interpol or Borginia doesn't want to share... |
Klavier isn't supposed to have the full picture for either side. |
Apollo: Yes, they might think it was an otherwise tasty, white lump of plastic. |
Apollo: Yes, they might think it was an otherwise tasty, multi-colored lump of plastic. |
The "lump of plastic" is shown to be multi-colored, not white. |
Apollo: Well, there must have been some reason other countries didn't want the cocoons out. |
Apollo: There must be some reason why Borginia didn't want those cocoons getting out. |
Borginia is the only country involved in this scenario. |
Apollo: ...Valant Gramarye! (...Using the door like an average muggle, no less.) |
Apollo: ...Valant Gramarye! (...I exclaimed as he walked in through the door. Normally.) |
Likely changed to both remove the blatant Harry Potter reference and continue a running gag where Apollo continually refers to Valant's actions as "normal" during the case. |
Apollo: Why she was in that air vent... |
Apollo: The reason why she was in that air vent... |
Phrasing was made more natural. |
Additionally, every instance of "Borginese" in the original was changed to "Borginian" in Trilogy. While this was presumably done to fix any lines that referred to something as "Borginese" by mistake, it had the (presumably unintended) side effect of changing the name of the language from "Borginese" to "Borginian" as well.
Turnabout Succession

Reason for Change |

Magnifi's Letter 2 added to the Court Record. |
Magnifi's Second Letter added to the Court Record. |
Phrasing was made more natural. |
Phoenix: Are you really him? The Zak Gramarye? |
Phoenix: Are you really him? THE Zak Gramarye? |
More emphasis was placed on "The" in the new line. |
Transferal of rights |
Transferral of Rights |
Typo fix ("Transferal" to "Transferral" - both are correct spellings, but the latter is more common). |
Phoenix: (That little girl might know something about him!) |
Phoenix: (Then that little girl is the key to our mystery client's true identity!) |
Phoenix shouldn't know anything about this case's client yet, including their gender. |
Brushel: He died in an accident on stage. |
Brushel: Apparently, he died during some gig. |
Interestingly, these lines seemed to become more ambiguous in Trilogy. That being said, it's fairly obvious that they were changed in order to align better with what happens in Spirit of Justice. |
Phoenix: Her first husband who died on stage? |
Phoenix: Her first husband who died during a performance? |

Judge: Being a bomb squad specialist, do you have any relation to the defendant? |
Judge: Being a bomb squad specialist, do you have any relation to the victim? |
The relation that's relevant in this case is with the victim, not the defendant. |
Phoenix: (The judge looks like he's about to book it for the nearest exit any second... And Mr. Payne...) |
Phoenix: (The judge looks like he's about to book it for the nearest exit any second... As for Mr. Payne...) |
Gaspen Payne and the judge have fairly different reactions here, so using "and" doesn't make much sense. |
The Monstrous Turnabout
Original |
Trilogy |
Reason for Change |

Athena: That's the whole point of special editions, isn't it? To be the first to get the scoop? Rapido! |
Athena: That's the whole point of special editions, isn't it? To be the first to get the scoop? ¡Rápido! |
Spanish correction (changed "Rapido" to "Rápido", an upside-down exclamation point was added). |
Athena: Andale, Apollo! Let's get cracking on that crime scene already! |
Athena: ¡Ándale, Apollo! Let's get cracking on that crime scene already! |
Another Spanish correction (changed "Andale" to "Ándale", an upside-down exclamation point was added). |
Apollo: The blackmailer must've taken it with them after they killed the alderman. Well, at least we've clearly established the killer's motive. |
Apollo: The blackmailer must've taken it with them after they killed the alderman. (Well, at least we've clearly established the killer's motive.) |
It doesn't make sense for Apollo to say the second sentence out loud; the parenthesis in the revision clarifies that it's a thought. |
Blackquill: Perhaps the killing was spur of the moment. |
Blackquill: Perhaps the killing was on the spur of the moment. |
While the original's use of "spur of the moment" isn't technically wrong, "on the spur of the moment" is more grammatically correct. |
Blackquill: And would that using some silly fairy tale so easily expose the culprit. |
Blackquill: And would that using some silly fairy tale could so easily expose the culprit. |
Original sentence dropped the word "could" by mistake. |
Athena: Okay, let's get over to the scene of the crime! Vamonos, Apollo, Vamonos! |
Athena: Okay, let's get over to the scene of the crime! ¡Vámonos, Apollo, Vámonos! |
Yet another Spanish correction (changed both instances of "Vamonos" to "Vámonos", an upside-down exclamation point was added). |
Phoenix: But at least you figured out how someone could have escaped the Forbidden Chamber. |
Phoenix: But at least you figured out how someone could have escaped that locked room. |
The culprit only had to escape from the locked room, not the Forbidden Chamber. |
Apollo: Over there on the left. There's a bunch of staffs on that rack. |
Apollo: Over there on the left. There's a bunch of staves on that rack. |
In this context, the correct plural of "staff" would be "staves". |
Apollo: There's... gotta be a hole in that testimony somewhere... But I don't even know where to start. |
Apollo: (There's... gotta be a hole in that testimony somewhere... But I don't even know where to start.) |
Like before, it makes little sense for this sentence to be spoken out loud and more sense for it to be a thought. |
Apollo: Remember where this mask was found? Washed up by the side of the river? |
Apollo: Remember where this mask was found? It was washed up by the side of the river. |
Second sentence was likely changed so Apollo would seem more confident and accusatory towards the culprit. |

Trilogy |

Athena: Oh, great idea! And I have just the thing to offer her, too! |
Athena: Oh, great idea! And I have just the thing to present her, too! |
You can only "present" items in the game, so the revision is more accurate. |
Orla's eating |
Orla's feeding habits |
Orla is an orca and can't control what she eats, so "feeding habits" is more accurate. |
Phoenix: We just learned that there's 300 of these, weighing about seven pounds all together. |
Phoenix: We just learned that there's three hundred of these, weighing about seven pounds in total. |
While the phrase "all together" does work for these lines, it's commonly discouraged to use it when referring to numerical values. |
Phoenix: There are 300 of these coins all together, weighing a total of about seven pounds. |
Phoenix: There are three hundred of these coins in all, weighing a total of about seven pounds. |
|
Phoenix: But are they REALLY that bizarre...? |
Phoenix: But is it REALLY that bizarre...? |
Phoenix is only referring to one thing here, not multiple. |
Blackquill: But when our rhyming marlin checked on the scene, over 400 pounds of props had fallen. |
Blackquill: But when our rhyming marlin took a look-see, over four hundred pounds of props had fallen. |
Possibly tweaked to be more in-character for Blackquill. |
Phoenix: In it, you can see Ms. Buckler and Orla singing together. |
Phoenix: In it, you can hear Ms. Buckler and Orla singing together. |
Singing is something you hear, not something you see. |
Orla: Fwe fwe fweet. Fwe fwe fwe fweeet! Fwe fwe fwe fweet fwe fwe fweet! |
Orla: Fwe fwe fweet, fwe fwe fwe fweeet! Fwe fwe fwe fweet, fwe fwe fwe fweet! |
Changed to match the song that's played in-game. |
Trucy: 3, 2, 1...... Ta-da! |
Trucy: 3, 2, 1... Ta-dah! |
Possibly changed to place less emphasis on the buildup and more on the last syllable of the sentence. |
Phoenix: Maybe the two of you need to take it easy. (Great, now I have crybabies in stereo...) |
Phoenix: Maybe the two of you need to take it easy. (Great, now I've got crying in stereo...) |
Original line could have easily been misinterpreted as having Phoenix's annoyance stem from the particular people who were crying, rather than the crying itself. |
Phoenix: (Quite a name... I wonder if it’s super admin restricted desktop access pass-protected.) |
Phoenix: (Okaaay... But is it SuPer-Admin Restricted Desktop Access password-protected?) |
Reference to "Recipe for Turnabout" from Trials and Tribulations was made more accurate. |
???: This is to celebrate! Eat it all up! |
???: Time to celebrate! Go on! Eat up! |
Corrected the wording in the flashback. |
Rimes: Orla killed the captain by bashin' him 30 feet high and makin' him slam down on the water! |
Rimes: Orla killed the captain by bashin' him thirty feet high and makin' him slam into the water! |
Using "on" suggests that the captain only hit the water's surface; this would be physically impossible unless the water was frozen over (it wasn't). |
Rimes: But the fact is, all three of us -- Sasha, the captain and me -- were cleanin' the pool room. |
Rimes: But the fact is, all three of us -- the captain, Sasha and me -- were cleanin' the pool room. |
Likely tweaked so the more relevant person ("the captain") is listed first. |
Phoenix: The pool is about 65 feet deep and there's about 30 feet between the water and ceiling. |
Phoenix: With the pool being sixty-five feet deep, there's only thirty feet between the water and ceiling. |
Original line was a run-on sentence, along with being somewhat awkwardly worded. |
Phoenix: ("A lawyer is someone who smiles no matter how bad it gets...") |
Phoenix: ("The worst of times are when lawyers have to force their biggest smiles...") |
Reference to "Reunion, and Turnabout" from Justice for All was made more direct. |
Phoenix: It might be the cause of his out-of-control emotions. Point to the spectators. |
Phoenix: It might be the cause of his out-of-control emotions. Let's try pointing to the spectators. |
Original line was written from Athena's perspective, not Phoenix's. |
Judge: I'm afraid I feel disgust and sadness, too. |
Judge: I'm afraid that I, too, feel nothing but sadness and disgust, Mr. Wright. |
Clarifies that the judge is agreeing with Phoenix, rather than adding on to what Phoenix said. |
Blackquill: I'll present the correct evidence this time! |
Blackquill: Now, if the defense is ready to inspire more than abject revulsion... |
Another line originally from the wrong character's perspective (in this case, Phoenix's). Blackquill is the case's prosecutor, so the mistake was very noticeable. |
Blackquill: The only thing you revealed was the witness's relationship with the victim a year ago. |
Blackquill: The only thing you revealed was the witness's connection to the victim of last year's incident. |
Possibly tweaked so Blackquill would place less importance on the relationship between the witness and the victim. |
Judge: What did he remove? This is what Mr. Rimes removed in an attempt to kill Orla! |
Judge: He did what now? Mr. Wright! What did Mr. Rimes remove in an attempt to kill Orla?! |
Yet another line originally from the wrong character's perspective (Phoenix's, again). Since the judge is the speaker, this mistake was somehow even more noticeable than before. |
Blackquill: ...that if you can't prove how Rimes manipulated the orca with this cross-exam... |
Blackquill: ...that if you can't prove with this cross-examination how Rimes controlled the orca... |
Revised sentence is far less clunky than the original. |
Phoenix: But Ms. DePlume said this song is different from the one sang a year ago. |
Phoenix: But Ms. DePlume said this song is different from the one that was sung a year ago. |
Because the sentence is comparing when two events occurred, the grammatically correct form of "sing" must be in the past perfect tense ("was sung", in this case). |
Orla: Fwe fweet! Fwe fweet! Fwe fwe fweet! Fweet! Fweet! Fwe fweet! Fwe fwe fwe fweet! |
Orla: Fwe fweet! Fwe fweet! Fwe fwe fweet! Fwe fwe fwe fwe fweeeeet! Fweet! Fweet! Fwe fwe fweet! Fwe fwe fwe fweeeeeeet! |
Again, the changed line matches the song that's played in-game. |

Athena: Thanks, Myriam. You've revealed who you truly are: As someone who's never had Junie's best interest in mind. |
Athena: Thanks, Myriam. You've revealed who you truly are: Someone who's never had Junie's best interests in mind. |
The original line using "As someone" made it sound like Athena was referring to herself, which doesn't make sense here. |
Apollo: Check out the chest area. It kinda looks like a hand print to me. |
Apollo: Check out the chest area. It kinda looks like handprints to me. |
The chest area is shown to have multiple handprints on it, not just one. |
Newman: L-Like I'd be into that kinda thing! I'm a dude! I'm into braces, not dresses! |
Newman: L-Like I'd be into that kinda thing! I'm a dude! And I'm into braces! |
Possibly the most well-known text changes in Trilogy are the ones related to Athena & Apollo assuming that Newman was a boy who liked dressing as a girl. The lines from the original game made Athena & Apollo seem like they thought Newman being gender nonconforming was in and of itself suspicious; Trilogy changed the offending lines to make it clear that the two saw Newman as suspicious specifically for wearing Juniper's clothes. |
Apollo: You don't think... Robin likes girls' clothes... do you? |
Apollo: You don't think... Robin's actually got a thing for Juniper's outfit... do you? |
|
Athena: And you really DO like frilly clothes, don't you? |
Athena: And you really DO like Ms. Woods's clothes, don't you? |
|
Athena: (...but he can't take it off, even when dressing like a girl. And why is he so interested in girls' clothes in the first place?) |
Athena: (...but he can't take it off, not even when he's trying to look pretty. What could be at the root of his complicated relationship with his brace?) |
|
Apollo: Bigger than the fact that he likes to wear girls' clothes? |
Apollo: Bigger than the fact that he's secretly jealous of Juniper's looks? |
|
You like girls' clothing |
You want to be pretty like a girl |
|
Athena: Mr. Newman! You like to dress like a girl! |
Athena: Robin Newman! You want to be as pretty as you feel! |
|
Athena: (But if he really likes to dress like a girl, you'd think he'd want to... ...take that "symbol of masculinity" off when he does it. Wait, could this mean...?) |
Athena: (And yet, he can't take that "symbol of masculinity" off... ...even when it clashes with his ideal self-image. Wait, could this mean...?) |
|
Apollo: Well, no offense, but for one thing, he's a guy -- and a real hothead at that. |
Apollo: Well, no offense, but his habit of shouting at the top of his lungs... doesn't exactly help... |
While the original line was a more accurate translation of the original Japanese, its context (Newman crying about not feeling pretty in girly clothes) caused Apollo to look insensitive at best. |
Athena: Well, I'm about to show you why, despite my age, I'm able to proudly wear this at all! |
Athena: Well, I'm about to show you why, despite my age, I can wear it with pride! |
Likely changed to make the line sound more enthusiastic. |
Athena: The voice on the tape recorder never was "You're a goner!" |
Athena: The sound on the tape recorder never was the phrase "You're a goner!" |
The characters don't really know if the "sound" is actually a voice or not. |
Athena: Hm... These two look like they go together. And these pieces, too! |
Athena: Hm... These two look like they go together. And this one, too! |
Only one piece gets added to the other two pieces. |
Fulbright: Sure, it looks like a nice drawing of a crescent moon. |
Fulbright: Sure, a nice crescent one -- like something out of a picture book. |
Fulbright shouldn't know that it's supposed to be a drawing yet. |
Means: I must use any means possible to distract her! See if she can think while I cast these stones! |
Means: But I'll use any means necessary! Even casting stones! If it'll distract her! |
The changed line matches better with Means throwing three chalk sticks while saying it. |

Fulbright: Yup. Thinking he'd sabotage the bombing, the defendant attacked and killed the victim. |
Fulbright: Yup. Thinking he'd sabotage the bombing, the defendant killed him right there in the rocket. |
Clarifies the location of the murder. |
Phoenix: Let's see... "The display on the astronaut's left shoulder shows how much oxygen remains." I guess that means these glowing cyan digits represent the amount of oxygen remaining... |
Phoenix: Let's see... "The display on the astronaut's left shoulder shows the oxygen remaining." I guess that means these glowing cyan digits represent the amount of oxygen in the tank... |
Revised line doesn't repeats itself as much. |
Phoenix: Apparently. This is an important fact. Do you see a bullet anywhere? |
Phoenix: Apparently. This is an important fact. Do you see a bullet around somewhere? |
Possibly changed to clarify that the bullet would be somewhere very close by. |

Clarifies that Phoenix is talking about Maya. |
Phoenix: (I can either use an evidence-based approach if I can find a contradiction.) |
Phoenix: (An evidence-based approach might work if I can find a contradiction.) |
Phoenix only mentions one approach that he uses, so saying "either" doesn't make sense. |
