Alan Wake's American Nightmare (Windows)

Alan Wake's American Nightmare is a standalone spinoff to Alan Wake, that combines the latter's gameplay with the wild action and campy silliness of a B movie.

So anyways I started blasting!

Sub-Pages#

Unused Cinematics#

The game's data/videos folder has one unused .bik video clip which is also present in the first game's videos folder. The video in the file is named "ingame_tv_trailer.bik" and is also preasent in the videos folder of the previous game. It appears to be a very low quality version of the E3 2009 trailer of the first Alan Wake game.

Unused Audio#

There are several unused voicelines in the game files. Like the previous game, most of those are extra narrations that were likely removed to not overly hold the player's hand.

Act 1#

Desert Shore Motel#

Grunts from Alan as he wakes up at the start of the level. Oddly there are different grunts for each time he wakes up at the start of a loop, but only the grunts for the second loop are used.

Alan: [Pained grunting]

Extra narration about the nature of the town and the setting, which is absent in the final game

Filename

round1_scene1_0010_narrator

Narrator: Another man might be shocked to find himself near Night Springs and indeed to find the town in Arizona, as opposed to any other place it might be in. But for the Champion of Light, the obvious taint of corruption he sences here is of far greater interest.

Extra line for Emma, likely meant for her turning off the radio when Alan approaches her

Emma: Sorry, let me just...

Narration meant to happen after the Setilight crash scene, which is not heard in the game itself

Filename

Audio

Transcription

round1_scene1_0084_narrator

Narrator: And there you have it, a glimpse of what we have in store. A mere taste of the chills and thrills hidden in our outlandish story. There's much more for you to experience... in Night Springs!

Extra lines of narration about Emma's death

round1_scene1_0119_narrator

Narrator: How unfortunate that her capacity for unquestioning belief ran out... when faced with the warning that could've saved her life.

A LINE OF Mr. Scratch laughthing

Filename

round1_scene1_0121a_mr_scratch

Mr. Scratch: (laughthing)

A comment from Alan regarding the keys he picks up at the diner. In the game itself, he doesn't say anything when picking up the keys.

Alan: I think those are keys for the motel rooms

Observetory#

A comment from Alan, likely about the observetory itself.

Filename

Audio

Transcription

round1_scene2_0002aa_wake

Alan: That's... pretty impressive.

When searching for the valves, it seems that Alan would've been able to interact with a map that would show him where the valves are, and Dr. Meadows would comment on that.

Filename

Transcription

round1_scene2_0048a_dr_meadows

Rachel: Oh yes, take a look at that! It will show you where the Valves are.

Drive-in Theater#

A comment from Alan about a movie poster or a sign.

Alan reactiong to something being thrown at him, likely meant for a part where a car is being thrown around.

Alan: Hey no... Hey, wait WAIT!

Act 2#

Desert Shore Motel#

Extra line of narration at the start of the loop, absent from the game itself.

Filename

round2_scene1_0004_narrator

Narrator: But there is hope. He now knows that the signal comes not from the depths of space, but from himself. A weapons... from beyond. One that turns the diabolical trap the Herald of Darkness has laid for him... on its creator. But to do that, he needs to survive long enough to complete the entire weapon.

Another line of narration about the events repeating themselves, pointing the player to go to the motel once more. This line is absent from the game itself and the player is left figuring out to go to the motel by either the objective text or by their own intuition.

Filename

Audio

Transcription

round2_scene1_0006_narrator

Narrator: History repeats itself. Again space raptures. Again, shadowy figures pour out. But the Champion of Light has been here before. He knows what to do, and... where to go.

A scripted painted grunt from Alan, not heard in the game.

Alan: [Pained grunting]

A part of the conversation between Alan and Emma during the fight with the taken at the motel, which is absent in the game itself.

Emma: What do you mean by "the bad thing"? Oh no, there's more of them!

round2_scene1_0055_wake

Alan: Can we talk about this later?

Another part of narration which would be played when Alan enters the room with the dead man once again. There is no narration on this part at the game itself.

Filename

Audio

Transcription

round2_scene1_0082_narrator

Narrator: The Champion of Light knew he would find the dead man here. Foreknowledge makes the discovery no less bitter.

Comments from Alan upon going to secure the fusebox behind Emma's garage to prevent her from being killed again.

Filename

round3_scene1_0022b_wake

Alan: That should keep them away from it.

Observetory#

An unused line from Dr. Meadows during the battle with the taken inside the observetory.

Filename

Drive-in Theater#

Passive lines from Serena in her touched form, meant to be heard from a distence when the player would get close to her office.

Filename

round3_scene3_0002_serena

Serena: Emmm... I feel all... yummy.

round3_scene3_0003_serena

Serena: I'm here all helpless... Anybody could... walk in and... do something.

round3_scene3_0004_serena

Serena: Oh, look at this... I'm still sweaty.

An entire unused conversation with Serena in her touched form, which would've happened before restoring the power in the nearby power plant and being able to remove the darkness from her. In the third loop, the player starts directly at the power plant and it is impossible to reach Serena's office prior to restoring the power. When entering her office in the game itself she has no lines in her touched form until the player turns on the lights.

round3_scene3_0005_serena

Serena: Hey...

round3_scene3_0006_wake

Alan: I'm just gonna go deal with the power.

round3_scene3_0008_wake

Alan: What is it?

round3_scene3_0009_serena

Serena: I- I don't want you to go! Nobody needs to know... You can do anything you like, you can be a rough as you want.

round3_scene3_0010_wake

Alan: You are persistent, I'll give you that, but I'm not interested.

round3_scene3_0013_wake

Alan: For what it's worth, this should be the last time you end up like this.

round3_scene3_0014_serena

Serena: You... could put me in my place, huh? I deserve it, you know it's worth it, baby, you know you want it.

round3_scene3_0015_wake

Alan: I don't think so.

round3_scene3_0016_serena

Serena: What's the matter, too much woman for you to handle? A little too hot for you? Come on, don't you wanna break off a piece? Show me who's the man? Come on... show me...

round3_scene3_0042g_mr_scratch

Mr. Scratch: You can't write your way out of this one, Wake! you can't change the ending!

Miscellaneous#

  • There are folders and files for 6 arcade maps in the game files, while the game has only 5 unique arcade level. Their Nightmare difficulty counterparts do not count, as they are each stored in different folders named "ArcadeX_Nightmare". The folders for "Arcade2" end up being unused, and the code for the main menu shows that the second arcade map actually loads the assets for "Arcade 3". This affects the numbering for the following maps too, with level 5 being "Arcade 6".
    • It is possible that Arcade2 eventually became Arcade3 and the numbering never changed for some reason, as there are metal crack sound files named "oneshot_arcade2_metal_creak" which can be heard in the final Arcade 2(Arcade3). The folders for "Arcade2" also only contain low level terrain files, with no collision or asset logs compared to the other arcade folders used in the game. However, it's just as possible that all the leftovers from the original "Arcade2" that were never used elsewhere were removed entirely given that the game had a strict size limit as part of the Xbox Live Arcade program and thus doesn't have leftovers and unused assets in the files, especially compared to its predecessor.
  • There is an ambience preset naming the Arcade 5 map "Junkyard" while its name in the final game is "Caves".
