Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Adventures of Tom Sawyer takes the well-known literary character by Mark Twain and sends him on an adventure in his dreams as he sleeps through school, kind of like most bored kids do while in school. All in all, an average side-scroller with a lot of rock-throwing.

Cheat Menu#

- MENU - LOVES YOU.

The Game Genie codes IEOXAPLL (US version) or IANXLOIZ (Japanese version) re-enables a cheat menu which had its way of entry disabled in the final version. After inputting the Game Genie code, press Up, then Down very quickly at the title screen to access it. The disabled code is supposed to be Up, Down, Down, Right, Left, Right, Right, Left, Up, Down, Down, Right, but the current Game Genie code cannot support the full code; therefore, only the first two buttons are needed to access the menu.

In the menu itself, you can pick which stage to begin at and toggle invincibility by pressing A at the option that is labeled as "Normal", which will change to "Power Up" accordingly. "Title" actually leads to the opening cutscene and not back to the title screen.

Regional Differences#

Title Screen#

Japan

US

The US version adds copyright information. As a result, the full Seta logo was reduced to plain text and the PUSH START text moved up and slightly to the left, and more white was added to the clouds in the bottom-left area to make room for the copyright text. In addition, the tail of the arrow in the game's title logo was changed from white to grey.

Stage Ordering#

The stage order was rearranged for the US release. Bizarrely, the first stage of the US version was one of the last stages of the Japanese version.

Spelling Correction#

Japan

US

On the score screen in the Japanese version, Huckleberry Finn (player 2) has his name misspelled as HACK. It was corrected to HUCK in the US version. This was most likely because the Japanese translation can translate to both (ハック Hakku).

Enemies#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Check if there are any more differences.

  • Pirates: In the Japanese version, the pirates on stage 1 (stage 5 in the Japanese version) attack with knives and guns, which are fired as projectiles toward the player. These were disabled in the US version, though they still hold the weapons.
  • Pamu: Takes fewer hits in the US version.
