Xenogears Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon's Fushigina Data Disc

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This is a sub-page of Proto:Xenogears.

To do:

  • Record differences within the demo's internal data.
  • Investigate effect codes for Gear Big Bang and the unused Brigandier spell.
  • Determine the demo's font table to find more differences.
  • Make note of differences with strong wind ambience.
  • Upload footage of the ending montage.
  • More screenshots as evidence.

The Xenogears demo included in Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon's Fushigina Data Disc was the first publicly available build of the game.

It has two revisions:

  • The first was included with Yoi Ko to Yoi Otona no. PlayStation Taikenban Vol. 1. The IMG file's last modification date is 1997-10-14.
  • The second was included in the Chocobo no Fushigina Dungeon's Fushigina Data Disc. The IMG file's last modification date is 1997-11-08.

Despite different build dates, the two are identical once duplicate files have been removed.

The demo starts at the flash forward of the attack on Lahan, and ends when the Kislev Gears spot Timothy returning to rescue Dan.

General Differences#

  • FMVs are absent, most likely to reduce on disc space.
  • When a Game Over occurs, the demo restarts back to the Lahan attack sequence.
  • Midori does not have a portrait despite having dialogue boxes.

Gameplay Differences#

Battle#

  • No music will play in the Game Over screen.
  • Characters will be loaded into the battlefield automatically rather than jump into it.
  • White font is used in battle, which is identical to what is featured in the pre-release materials.
  • A sound effect will not play when a character's turn begins.
  • End-of-battle screen does not darken and the characters will play their victory animations on an infinite loop.
  • Sound effects will not play when a character receives experience points.
  • The sound effect used for a level up is missing.
  • Sound effects are often missing during battle, such as when a character is about to use an elemental Deathblow.
  • Combo cannot be used.
  • Fei, Elly and Bart are the only characters who can be used. If Citan is added to the party via the debug room, the battle screen will crash.
  • All Ether abilities cost 2 EP.
  • Elly and Bart's weapons can be removed even if no alternatives are available in the menu. However, their battle animations will not be affected despite lacking a weapon.
  • All characters start with 7 AP.
  • Fei's victory animation loops constantly after a battle. Elly and Bart will play theirs once, but resume their regular battle animations.
  • On the user interface for gear battles, "Temp." is used instead of "Hyper mode." The difference can also be seen in the Dengeki Playstation D5 trailer. This along with unfinished Hyper Mode Deathblows and missing code in the battle executable suggests that development for the mechanic was still in progress.

Proto

Final

  • No victory screen appears after a gear fight.

Overworld#

  • Unlike the final version, an Option section is used instead of Exit in the menu. However, it cannot be opened.
  • Aquasols will be consumed even if a character is at full HP.
  • Spider Web will not be put inside the inventory when obtained.
  • Items will respawn if you re-enter a room.
  • You cannot save your game, even when interacting with a Memory Cube.
  • Elly and Bart are added to your team in the Mountain Path, with dialogue poking fun at how they are not supposed to appear in the script yet. They will leave the party once Fei reaches Citan's House.
  • Fei, Elly, Citan and Bart are the only characters who can be used. In the case of Citan, he can only be selected in the debug room. Attempting to add any other character will crash the game. Despite this, the stats for the rest of the party are still present within the game's files.

  • All spells have 20 power and 2 EP.
  • Emeralda did not come with experience in any of her attack types originally.

Chu-Chu#

  • Both in the demo and in final, Chu-Chu has data for Deathblows that aren't used. Similar to Billy, Rico, and Emeralda, she has test data for Deathblows starting at TTTTX with 20 power. These were removed in final.
  • Chu-Chu's spell data is largely copied from Fei. However, none of her spells have EP Data and only Guided Shot and Big Bang have power modifiers.

Maria#

  • Similar to Billy, Rico, and Emeralda, Maria has test data for Deathblows starting at TTTTX with 20 power. These are completely overwritten in final.
  • Maria is using Chu-Chu's spell data.
  • All spells have 2 EP.
  • Forest Dance, Maiden Kiss, and Ancient Myth are the only spells with power modifiers. Forest Dance and Ancient Myth are at 20, while Maiden Kiss is identical to final.
  • No elemental effects are present with Forest Wind and Earth Gnome.
  • Maria's Agility was originally 5, but raised to 7.

Citan (sword)#

  • Animations for Hobgobs when they attack or recovering from a knock down are incomplete.
  • Characters will not enter a weakened pose when they are at critical health.

Proto

Final

  • The sprites used for Fei and Elly in the campfire scene are noticeably rougher than in the final game.

Proto

Final

Enemy Models#

  • MushaMK100 design is used for the reinforcement gears that attack the villagers in Lahan.

Cutscene Differences#

  • Camera angles often differ from final. Most notably when Fei fights the gears in the opening sequence and when he talks with Alice in her room.
  • The optional scene where Wiseman brings Fei to Lahan Village cannot be viewed. As the scene is late into the final game's ROM, it can assumed that the scene was not implemented yet.
  • The opening crawler explaining the war between Kislev and Aveh is not present. The demo immediately begins with the attack on Lahan Village shown in medias res.
  • We, the Wounded Shall Advance into the Light is used when Dan recovers Alice's dress instead of Earthy Tears, Mortal Thoughts.
  • The orphanage is empty during the Renmazuo launch sequence in the ending montage.
  • During the campfire at Blackmoon Forest in the ending montage; the camera pans downwards from the night sky, then zooms into Fei and Elly. In the final game, the scene cuts straight to Fei and Elly at the fire.
  • The angle used to view Chu-Chu in the hangar is lower than in the final game. No NPCs are present in the scene.
  • The return to Lahan from the Mountain Path has several differences compared to the final version. When Fei sets foot on the bridge, the screen flashes a couple of times and rumbling can be heard, which prompts a response.

雷......?

Thunder...?

  • When Fei finishes crossing, where the screen will turn white briefly. This suggests that this where the first Grahf vs Khan FMV would have played, as indicated by Famitsu #467. Fei will have dialogue as shown in the below table.

……? な、なんだったんだ 今のは……?

W-what was that just now......?

  • The exchange between Fei and Citan before Lahan is hit by the gears is different in this version.

Fei

Yeah, a giant flying object! And then it...

  • Just after Citan runs to Lahan, a scene occurs that was removed from the final game. Fei will have another flash to white, with Citan then asking if he is alright. This suggests that this where the second Grahf vs Khan FMV would have played. The dialogue is listed below.
