Error quotes#
Pre-Alpha Error Messages#
These are the earliest voice lines for the human male that aren't just diablo 2 placeholders. Dated 2002, these files are prefixed with HUM which stands for HUman Male, this type of file labeling was used for pre-alpha character files/models. Unlike all of the other character error quotes, these are located in Speech.MPQ instead of Sound.MPQ (in fact these are the only files in this archive, later versions would move all spoken dialogue to this archive, though it is unclear why these early voice lines are here instead of the final voice lines). These files were removed in 0.5.5. Judging by the contents, it seems that character error quotes were once planned to be more humorous rather than blunt and have "pissed" variants, comparable to the irritated quotes you get from repeatedly clicking on an NPC.

TempPCErrorLines#
Error quotes for the Human male and female. They were likely used before the actual quotes were recorded, as they are located in a folder titled "TempPCErrorLines".
Along with the below, character quotes from Blizzard's past game Diablo II are also present, likely also used as placeholders or for testing.

Login Screen Music#
Located in Sounds/Music/GlueScreenMusic are 4 files, one of which is the login screen music used in the final game (wow_main_theme.mp3). The other 3 files in this folder are named intro1.mp3, intro2.mp3 and intro3.mp3.
Intro1 |
Intro2 |
Intro3 |
|---|---|---|
intro1 is the song A Call To Arms included in the official OST.
intro2 is a small part of the song The Shaping Of The World also included in the official OST.
intro3 is the song Human 1 from Warcraft 2.
Intro1 and 2 were likely just candidates for the main login music before a new song was created for it. Intro3 is a song from warcraft 2 obviously meant to be used as a placeholder. Interestingly intro3 is dated 8 months before intro1 and 2.
MIDI Ambience#
|
|
To do: |
Up until Alpha 0.7 the ambient zone sounds were in MIDI format, this method was replaced with proper .wav ambience in 0.7. These old files give us an early look at how the game sounded.

The following are voice lines located in Creature/Thief/Thief_not used they appear to be voice lines that would play when the thief was attacked, aggro'd, wounded and idle. This was scrapped and replaced with grunting sounds like every other creature.
