Version 697 from 16th May 2001 is a prototype version of Unreal II: The Awakening, originating from almost two years before the game was released. The resources present in maps are largely similar to the final game, but there's plenty content in the game files that has major differences. This is the old leak by CROMiX of a build made in preparation for E3. Doesn't contain source code or standalone resources, but models were eventually recently extracted, and it has many, including some unused. Sadly, the maps are mostly only the presentation demo levels. However, there's plenty unused and never before seen textures. The first time we see Unreal II running on an early Unreal Warfare engine, unfortunately this transition meant loss of some great effects made custom for the previous engine such as truly dynamic stackable lights (as seen on the original U2 flashlight), destructible light sources, realistic glass behavior and bullet time physics and more, present in the previous builds.
Version 697 can be downloaded here alongside the other three Unreal II alpha versions.
