Download Test Prototype

This is a sub-page of Proto:Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Sonic 06 was planned to have many different DLCs, including stories for the side characters, called amigos. This Download Test was, as the name implies, a test to see how the amigos would work in various parts of the stage, such as town missions. This one seems to have been primarily used to test Tails.

The folder that this early DLC uses is the same one used for Team Attack Amigo, which indicates that it was likely built off of this in some way.

Unused characters#

The version of Mephiles in the Episode Select screen is actually defined as a player, and he even has player scripts within the DLC's files. These scripts are largely copies of Tails' scripts, with the only differences being in the model and animations loaded for the Episode Select screen. Whether this was a placeholder or they were planning on fleshing out Mephiles as a playable character is unknown, as there are no leftover text strings in the final game that indicate that Mephiles was ever meant to be playable.

Oddities#

Likely due to it's early, unfinished, and likely never-meant-to-be-released state, the DLC features a handful of oddities.

• The human NPCs will repeat their voice grunts every frame for some reason.
• Several missions do not have proper victory cameras or positions assigned.
• The game will be softlocked upon completing the DLC, as the results screen is not disposed of properly.

Text#

Text for the DLC only exists in the Japanese version, as it was likely never meant to be released. Every other language just has dummy text.

The text refers to "Kynapse", which is the middleware program that 06 uses for NPC AI behavior and pathing. Interestingly, there are also two NPC names that are unused in the final game, Kiara and Laura.

The text file also has much of the text for Castle Town and New City.
