This page details one or more prototype versions of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge.
A rolling demo of the game was released, and it can be played by opening it in ScummVM.

This needs some investigation. |
Visual Differences#
- The palette-shifting used for backgrounds with water is not seen in the demo.
- Several of the item icons were redrawn.
- The quit message has a small red rectangle around it instead of a more detailed, purple rectangle.
- The librarian does not have any shading. The same goes for Bart and Fink.
- The Bloody Lip has a hastily-drawn piano rather than a properly painted-in one.

Final |

|
While the general layout is the same as the final version, it is very different art-wise. The room is easier to see, with a blue background instead of an orange-red one. The signs in the background are all yellow with red fonts, while the final has more varied signs. The "1/2 OFF" sign looks like it was drawn hastily, while the final art has it properly drawn onto the coffin. There are no blue balloons or flags in the final. Furthermore, there are flickering candles in the demo. The reason for this is that Booty Island was originally meant to take place at night, but it was changed to day sometime in development, and this room wasn't quite adjusted in time for the demo.
Unused Graphics#
ROOM 01#
Unused Z-Plane#

Z-plane |
In Game |
|---|---|
|
|
|
In Room 01, there is an unused Z-Plane featuring a rough version of the Monkey Island 2 logo.
ROOM 02#
Incomplete Shipwreck#
In Room 2, in Object 5, there is a piece of the destroyed shipwreck used in the final game. In this version, the sprite appears to have a white background.
Placeholder Sprite#
Also in Room 02, in Guybrush’s Costume00 animations, the last frame is a placeholder image that says 'Bear' or 'Beard goes here,' with an arrow pointing to a scribble or an incomprehensible drawing.
ROOM 03#
Unused Animation of Guybrush from MI1?#
A placeholder animation for Guybrush climbing down through the Bloody Lip window uses the Guybrush sprite from the first game.
ROOM 05#
Unused Jojo animation#
This animation of Jojo playing the piano, although present in the demo files, is not used. In this version, the monkey from the previous game was apparently supposed to be used, but in the final release, a completely different one appears instead.
Jojo’s hypnotized head#
The head of Jojo that was intended to be used during some other room deleted from the demo.
Restoration of Jojo's Piano-Playing Sequence#
This video showcases a partial restoration of the unused **Jojo piano-playing sequence** found within the game's data. By manually reactivating several dormant scripts through the SCUMM debugger, it is possible to make both the metronome and Jojo appear and animate.
Open the SCUMM debugger by pressing **Ctrl + Alt + D**, then enter:
room 9
This loads the Bloody Lip room. Next, execute:
script 217 run
to animate the metronome, followed by:
script 218 run
which spawns Jojo and starts the piano-playing animation.
At the time of writing, it has not been possible to restore Jojo's original room object. Examination of the scripts suggests that the object remains permanently locked at **state 0**, preventing it from being activated normally within the room.
However, Jojo can still be obtained as an inventory item by entering:
object 92 pickup
This command directly adds the Jojo icon to the player's inventory.
the Hypnotism sequence can be triggered.#
Enter:
room 27
go to the jail area. Collect the **Gorilla Envelope**, open it, and retrieve the **banana** inside. go to the Previous room(room 9), then Use the banana on the metronome the cutscene will start.
the dialogue scene will show jojo hypnotized but will not use the frontal head found in the game data...
The purpose of this graphic head remains unknown. Based on its appearance, it was likely intended for a different scene.
One possibility is that it belonged to an earlier version of the crank puzzle or another deleted room interaction, although no conclusive evidence has yet been found.
The Unused Spittoon#
Another unusual discovery on room 9 type:
object 76 pickup
This adds the **Spittoon** item to the inventory.
After being collected, the object appears to leave behind part of a map graphic covering an unidentified section of the room, suggesting that the item may originally have been obtainable during normal gameplay.
Interestingly, no proper inventory icon exists for the Spittoon. Instead, the game uses the generic placeholder graphic **"ICON!"**, indicating that the item was likely never completed before being cut from the game.
Monkey Island 2 Amiga Rolling Demo#
Monkey Island 2 Amiga Rolling Demo is a 9-slide demonstration build created to showcase early screenshots from Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge prior to release. The slideshow identifies the game as being scheduled for release in Fall 1991 and presents several scenes from an unfinished version of the game.
Although primarily intended as a promotional preview, the demo contains a number of differences from the final release.
Differences from the Final Game#
- The interface still uses the original full verb list from the first Monkey Island, rather than the streamlined interface used in the final version of Monkey Island 2.
- Several inventory icons use earlier graphics that differ from their final appearances.
- Some rooms contain incomplete artwork, placeholder elements, or unfinished object layouts.
ODDITIES: Herman Instead of Wally?#
In the third slide, a peculiar difference can be seen behind the poorly drawn bars of LeChuck's Fortress. Instead of Wally, the character visible in the cell appears to be **Herman Toothrot**.
This could suggest one of two possibilities:
- **Herman was being used as a temporary placeholder sprite** while the dedicated imprisoned Wally graphics were still being created.
- **Herman was originally intended to occupy the cell**, with Wally replacing him later during development as the story and puzzles evolved.
No evidence currently exists to determine which explanation is correct. However, the presence of Herman in a scene that would later feature Wally provides an interesting glimpse into the game's development process and suggests that this part of the story may still have been undergoing revision when the slideshow was created.
