This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace. |
A November 23, 2007 build of Grand Theft Auto IV was released on March 28, 2026, predating the final game by under five months. This build was recovered from a Rockstar North Xbox 360 development kit that was partially overwritten, but is still worth a look.
Considering this was released after the game was announced to be delayed, and Rockstar's habit of last-minute changes, it is obvious there are a lot of cut and changed things to be found there.
Map#
The map in the build differs in minor ways from the final game.

Ah, the infamous cut ferry. The model for it is present in this build, but it is non-functional. Ferries were cut late mostly due to collision and pedestrian scripting issues.1

The station appears to have at one point been meant to play songs at random instead of one long audio file like in the final game as songs and the station idents are separated. Additionally, Getaway Driver by Maino is an instrumental and there are 2 station identifiers that were cut in the final build.
The Journey#
No cut songs, but Pruit Igoe by Philip Glass is missing from this build, and the female computer voice heard in the final is a male computer voice instead.
ZiT! Strings#
Two additional cut songs appear in the american.gxt file.

- TM_82_19 = Zit! Spotted PLACEBO: Stomp
Cutscenes#

|
To do: |
- During the Three Leaf Clover bank heist, Derrick says C4 instead of PE4.
- During Wrong Is Right, when Niko meets ULP, they both say FBI instead of FIB.
- In the second Uncle Vlad cutscene, Niko seems to be struggling a bit more toward the end when he's dropping Vlad's body.
- In Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, Gracie doesn't moan when she walks past the diamonds and reaches Tony's arms.
- In The Cousin Bellic, Hossan says "we need to get this thing ready before we land" instead of "dock". Niko also says "Yeah, stupid shit" and sighs before saying "After the war finished, I couldn't get a job, nobody could..." When Niko gets off the boat, no other passenger can be heard cheering as they see their loved ones or friends or whatever.
- Escuela of the Streets' final cutscene is a completely different take, the dialogue remains the same though.
- In Blow Your Cover during Elizabeta's party, Don Omar's "Dale Don Dale" is the music playing instead of "Salió El Sol".
- Right at the end of The Snow Storm's intro cutscene Jacob says "Watch me and her bloodclot gal" or something like that. The cutscene ends before he finishes his sentence in the final game.
- In Rigged to Blow, they used a different actor for Faustin with slightly different lines, most likely as a stand-in. The other actors' lines appear to be the same as the final game.
- In The Master and the Molotov's first cutscene, two people jog past Niko and Dimitri, this time the woman jogger can be heard talking saying: "He said maybe he'd go on Saturday night. I don't know. I mean, he's still seeing his ex-girlfriend. He only wants to go out on happy hours. He's cheap. I need somebody who likes me!"
- At the end of Russian Revolution, Niko frees himself from the Russian mobster and calls out Jacob who says "Move, Niko!" before he starts shooting. It's hard to hear but I think Jacob then says "You're dead, homeboy!"
- In Holland Nights, they used a different take for Francis but not for the entire cutscene, at least it doesn't sound like it. Everything up until Niko says "This is the last time" appears to be a different take.
- Bleed Out's intro cutscene starts a little earlier than the one we got in the final game. Essentially, Roman gets beaten up more, Bledar says "You think you're Mr tough guy, yeah?!" and Kaleb says "No one does that to Dardan and gets away with it!" before the cutscene we got in the final game starts. The cutscene also ends with Bledar saying "We don't want trouble with you."
- In Shadow, Chuck Fenda's "All About Da Weed" is playing in LJ's apartment as opposed to "So Much Trouble In The World".
- Deconstruction for Beginners also starts earlier than the final one. Niko buzzes Playboy who tells him to head on up, then once Niko comes out of the elevator the cutscene plays as normal.
- In Museum Piece, when Niko meets up with Johnny, Johnny's line is different: "Uh, let's hope this goes a little better than before, yeah? Let's do this." instead of "Come on, let's get inside." Looking at the cutscene, Johnny's lips don't seem to match the final line.
- In The Cousins Bellic, Niko says "In your letters to your mother, in your emails to me..." instead of "In your letters to my mother, in your letters to me..." It's possible Niko's lips don't match the final lines either.
- Right at the end of Three's a Crowd, Roman has an extra line: "Oh, man, look at this crap. My computer and everything. Ah, come on!"
- In Uncle Vlad, when Niko confronts Vlad at Comrades, Vlad has an extra line right at the end of the cutscene: "Now... get them out of here! Permanently!"
- In Roman's Sorrow, when Niko and Roman arrive at the new apartment, the door doesn't make the same creaking noise when it's closing as the final cutscene.
- Bull in a China Shop starts earlier with Mel making a scene and Sergei laughing. Sergei cannot be heard laughing in the final cutscene. They also used a different take for Vlad's dialogue.
- Hung Out to Dry also starts earlier with Vlad having a few more lines talking on the phone to Mallorie in the background. The inspector also has a few more lines asking Mickey's name right before the final cutscene starts.
- In Clean Getaway, during the "I'm walking here" scene, the taxi driver doesn't say anything.
