The prototype's intro is completely different, using text and artwork completely unique to this build of the game. Three blocks of story text scroll upwards as background illustrations fade in and out. (The text is stored in the ROM as solid chunks of graphics rather than utilizing a font.)

However, the story doesn't make much sense -- as if several parts are missing. It starts with Earnest approaching a shrine in Mexico in search of a statue that was found. It then immediately jumps to Earnest talking to two mysterious "visitors" about obtaining a "Necronomikon" book on behalf of president Calvin Coolidge.

It then cuts to a portrait of Earnest and a quick animation of him turning around to face a valley on a mountainside.

The final game simply adapts the intro from the Mega CD version, albeit in truncated form. Earnest is on a river boat approaching a hidden ruin in a forest. All of the dialogue with the boater was cut, and the intro contains no text at all.

Ending#

The prototype also contains a unique ending screen. Text gradually fades in over top of a portrait of Earnest, implying future tales of the character. This screen was completely cut from the final game, jumping straight into the credits after the final boss is defeated.

Unused Graphics#

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

Like the final game, the prototype also includes leftover data from a completely unrelated game. However, instead of Namco's Marvel Land, it's from Sega's OutRun.
