Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc 27#

  • Earliest game demo, dated August 25, 1999 (according to timestamps of files on disc).
  • Because the demo has no video files, the developer and publisher logos are presented on the legal screen. The logo has a different design from the final version.

Final

  • Most submenus are locked, some frontend (like button functionality) elements placed differently. "Single Player" was renamed as "Single Race", and "Two Player" and "Demolition League" are flipped.

Demo

Final

  • The options menu in the demo only has selections for screen configuration and game settings.

Demo

Final

  • The game settings menu received a few changes in the final version: there is an option for "Damage Realism", which was later replaced with the "Power Ups" option. Additionally, "Laps" was renamed "Chase Laps" and the vibration setting was moved to the controller configuration menu. An option to view the credits was also added.

Demo

Final

  • Only the Demolition mode is playable, and Pitbull Speedway is only selectable track.
  • Of note is the help text on the button for making selections; this was replaced with left and right arrows in the final version.

  • The only vehicle available is the Renegade, which also has a different default color scheme. The car stats and logo are not displayed.

  • The Paintshop lacks the option for selecting a logo.

Audio#

  • The demo version only has the song "Empirion". In the files, which are stored in DR_DEMO.XA, this song has four duplicates.
  • The music stops playing temporarily while making car and color selections.

Gameplay#

  • The pre-race loading screen displays the control scheme.

Demo

Final

  • The start countdown has no sound effects.
  • The position counter does not subtract vehicles that are destroyed during a race.
  • There are no bonus items on the track.
  • The pop-ups for earned points fly across the screen from the center left to upper right, and also lack the text for the action performed.

Demo

Final

  • Tire tracks and dust effects on the road are missing.

Demo

  • The fire and smoke effects for heavy car damage was improved in the final version. The effects that display when the car reaches 25% health was also changed.

Final

  • The images in the loading screens are placed a bit lower than in the final version. They also have a line on the bottom.

Euro Demo 56 and 57#

The European demo is based on the final version, both of which contain similar files. The overall game content is similar to that of the US demo.

  • In Euro Demo 56, the game is called Demolition Racers and is marked as a "rolling" demo, though it is fully playable. In Euro Demo 57, the correct name is used and is not marked as "rolling".
  • The legal screen lacks the ESRB rating from the US demo.
