This is a sub-page of Proto:Crash Team Racing/August 14th, 1999 build.

Despite the game lacking any voice clips at this stage, the XA directory contains a plethora of filler audio and placeholder recordings made by the developers - most notably programmer Gavin James - which would later be replaced by the actual voice acting.

Some characters, however, already have their own full set of voice clips implemented.

Unused Sound Effects#

Some of the sound effects were completely removed from the final game, while others are present but were implemented later.

Level

Notes

147

Coco Park

Some sort of animal sound.

148

What sounds like a time-streched sample of a baby babble.

141

Polar Pass

Two water splashing sound effects that were removed in the final game, which were most likely from the Orca hazard when it jumped out of and back in to the water.

142

158

N/A

The warp in/out sound effects from the first game. These may have been a placeholder for the warp pad teleportation sound.

159

161

Unknown sparkling sound.

162

A chime sound effect.

163

The letter pickup sound effect but slower.

In addition, some Adventure Mode-related sound effects are already present in the audio data, but have not been programmed to play in-game yet:

  • Warp pad loop.
  • World door unlocking and opening.
  • Regular boss garage opening.
  • Nitros Oxide's garage opening.

Unused Music#

The race defeat and all podium fanfares are present within the files, but go unused in this build.

Aku Aku Announcer Clips#

Unused audio files only present in this build reveal that at one point the developers considered Aku Aku to be the game's announcer. Clips announcing the name of the tracks and a few other lines that would be used during the races were recorded, but all of them were eventually scrapped. In the September 3rd, 1999 prototype, some of these clips spoken by Uka Uka can also be found unused, although only those relating to the races.

Nitro Court is the only level with an earlier name, instead being called "Castle Courtyard". It is likely they wanted this name for the arena from the start, but could not fit it into the level select screen due to the limited space available for the track names.

Aku Aku Fillers#

Several duplicate audio files containing random fragments of Aku Aku's cutscene dialogue from Crash 3 are used to fill empty audio space in the EXTRA folder. Three clips in particular are repeated throughout what would later become the Adventure Mode audio files:

Notes

Uka Uka is free?! No... it cannot be! Evil... great evil has come... Crash, now!

The final part was cut and is actually absent in the final version of the cutscene. Interestingly, you can still hear it in the September 26th, 1998 build.

Children, Uka Uka and Cortex plan to use this Time-Twisting Machine to gather crystals that lay scattered across time. I have brought you here to recover the crystals before they do so. To open the time portal, simply stand on a button and then jump into the portal. Good luck.

Interestingly, Aku Aku says that dialogue in the intro cutscene, but this clip has the Time Twister sound effects included before and after his dialogue, as if it was meant to be a Time Twister interval, which never happens as you are told everything before you even access the Warp Room.

Crash, Coco, if you have already retrieved a level's crystal, then you will find a floating clock when you enter for the second time. This floating clock activates Time Trial mode. Grab it and the clock will start ticking. Race for the end to get the best time. But beware, some elements will change.

Voice Clips#

At this point in development, Tiny Tiger, N. Gin, Ripper Roo, Pinstripe, and N. Tropy already had all their set of voice clips implemented. Apart from N. Gin, there are minor differences compared to the final clips.

Tiny Tiger#

Tiny's voice clips are using the original voice pitch. In the final game, all of his audios have been lowered in pitch and slightly slowed down. Also, his "laugh taunt" clips are identical to his "sneaky taunt" clips. In the final game, the "laugh taunt" clips are slightly slower.

Aug 14

Final

Ripper Roo#

Ripper Roo's "big air", "yay" and "passive taunt" clips were re-done in the final game using other chunks of the stock recordings. The "yay" and "passive taunt" ones all share the same sample, but each one has a different pitch.

Aug 14

Final

Pinstripe#

Pinstripe's clips have an echo and are quieter overall.

Aug 14

Final

Dr. N. Tropy#

Dr. N. Tropy's clips have an echo and some are quieter. One of his voice clips was also re-recorded in the final game.

Placeholder Voice Clips#

The remaining character audio banks are placeholder samples of programmer Gavin James reading out the basic actions of each character in a deadpan tone. Some leftovers of these filler clips are still present in Penta Penguin's audio files and the incomplete set of unused race result dialogues in the final North American release.

Voice Slider Placeholders#

In the Options menu, the voice adjustment uses two sample audio clips of each character to preview the volume according to the slider position. Funnily enough, the developers decided to record their own voice impressions for each character and put them in the menu as a placeholder. Note that in this build, only Crash, Cortex, and Coco actually have these audios enabled in-game. Tiny Tiger, N. Gin, Ripper Roo, Pinstripe, and N. Tropy already use their actual voices, and the rest of the characters' impressions cannot be heard in-game, but are present in the files.
